Dottie's chili in the crock pot - question

Hi all. I'm using 93% lean beef for this recipe - should I still brown it first with the onions and then put it in the crock pot? Or just dump everything in? There's not much fat in the meat - not sure if browning does much?

Suggestions welcome. Thanks!

I don't brown it first, but I do add about 3/4 cup very hot water and break it up really good before adding other things, or else it ends up in chunks.

I've made that recipe I believe, and believe you add the ground beef cooked so it is crumbly and not one solid raw glob that cooks solid. Not positive, but don't think the amount of fat in the meat changes the recipe which requires the meat be cooked first. Enjoy!

We like our meat chunky so I don't do the hot water part!

I've learned to do mine in the pressure cooker now too. It's done FAST and it kind of makes it taste the way it normally tastes only after it's been in the fridge overnight. You know, how the flavors meld together better? Cooking in the PC seems to achieve that right off the bat.

I don't prebrown anything. It all goes into the PC and I set it for 30 minutes.

Where is this recipe? I would never of thought to put uncooked ground beef in crockpot. Hmmm

I have done it both ways and I think I prefer it with the meat browned first. Seems to have more flavor, but that's just my opinion................ Ann

Browning always gives more flavor due to the Maillard reaction of heat/meat. But sometimes I don't have time, or I'm too lazy, so I skip that step. Still turns out good, just not AS good!

Layering flavors by browning, adding herbs and spices at different stages, etc. is the way to get the most out of your cooking. Some days just don't lend themselves to hours in the kitchen though.
