Grilled Mussels with Spicy Cilantro Butter

It was just the hubby and me for dinner on the 4th, so I decided to do something different than the usual grilled burgers or dogs. I used this recipe as my template. These were very easy to cook and were delicious. The butter would be equally good on grilled shrimp, fish, or chicken. The only disappointment was that we didn't have bread to soak up the extra sauce - oh well, we used spoons!


Rinse, scrub and debeard 2 lbs. mussels. Preheat grill to medium-high. Clean and lightly oil hot grill (or preheat a perforated grill sheet).

In a small saucepan, combine and melt over medium-low heat:
1 stick salted butter
3 Tbsp. Sriracha sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced or pressed

Add some chopped fresh cilantro and keep warm.

Place cleaned mussels on hot grill (or grill sheet) in a single layer. Place two lemons, halved and lightly oiled, on grill, cut side down. Grill until mussels open, about 3 to 5 minutes. With tongs, transfer mussels as they open to a large platter. (Discard unopened mussels.) Pour butter over mussels; sprinkle with coarse salt and ground pepper. Serve with lemons.

Serves 2-3

Mmmmm. Sounds a lot like classic New Orleans BBQ shrimp, except the cilantro is unique. This sounds delicious! And I agree, this butter sauce would be great on fish, shrimp or chicken! Thanks for sharing here.

Sounds delicious and will be a nice switch from my garlic wine sauce. Love the addition of the cilantro. Definitely on my have to try it list.
