What is your single best recipe that optimizes prep time vs. taste vs. convenience?
 
I need to start cooking more. But, I want to ease back into it. What is your "go to" recipe when you just need easy, good, and basic?

Yes, I have read other threads, but am starting my own b/c I want the wisdom and filtering of the human poster. I don't want to read the 10,000 recipes already posted.

Low prep time
Good taste
Good simple/convenience factor.

To clarify, this doesn't mean it HAS to be 5 mins. I don't need the quickest prep time. I just mean all things equal, I simply prefer less prep time, and higher convenience. Got one that strikes a good balance between all 3?

Every weekend I cook some kind of chicken (wings, thighs, etc.) or buy a roast chicken. I use the meat for meals and the bones to make bone broth. I have bone broth every weekday morning with cream for breakfast.
My quickest and easiest meal is eggs and bacon for dinner. I usually end up having this once or twice a week when I'm just too pooped after work to even think of anything to eat.
My really, truly laziest meal is a frozen burger patty from Costco. They take just a minute to cook. I buy the ones that are something like 22% fat. But, I guess that isn't really cooking.:laugh:
Crack slaw (any of its versions) is also pretty quick to throw together.
One recipe that I tried a couple of weeks ago and really liked (and I'm planning on making for dinner tonight) is the No Dough Pizza. So far, it's the quickest, easiest pizza recipe I've made.
Well, those are the quickest and easiest that I can think of right at the moment. Everything else takes more time and prep. I'm looking forward to what everyone else comes up with 'cause I'm to the point that all I want is simple and quick.

Hands down, it's gotta be cjack1's Main Dish Like Velveeta Rotel Dip

I shred my own cabbage, but the OP buys pre-shredded

1 pan, 4 ingredients, 30 minutes

It's not pretty, but it's GOOD! :yummy:

The whole roasted chicken is a good idea. I gotta do that more often. They're pretty cheap, as well.

Burger patties are another good "entry level" idea.

I grill most of my meat on the gas grill.

Light grill
open frig, remove lettuce, spinach, onion, cucs, mushrooms, cheese, and meat
put meat on grill, set timer for 5 min
clean and cut salad fixins
turn meat, re-set timer for 5 min
get out plate, dress the salad, feed the dogs
remove meat from grill

Dinner in 10 minutes.


instead of salad...
zucchini sauteed in bacon grease, topped with parm cheese
cucs with ranch dressing
saute green beans in bacon grease
nuke cauliflower, top with shredded cheese
nuke broccoli, top with Alfredo sauce from a jar
roasted veggies in the oven
asparagus sauteed in EVOO


That is cooking when I am too tired to cook.

This isn't a recipe- but it's delicious!

Sprinkle 1/2 cup pizza cheese over a dinner plate. Lightly season with
Italian seasoning. Arrange pepperoni slices, cooked & crumbled Italian
sausage, chopped onion, sliced mushrooms, etc. over cheese. (I like
either pepperoni alone, or pepperoni with a few canned mushroom slices.)
Cook plate on HIGH for 60 to 75 seconds.

While cheese is cooling, cut up salad fixings (I like plain lettuce for this
salad).

Use a pizza cutter to cut cheese layer into small squares, and a rubber
scraper to loosen cheese from plate. Top salad with squares and add
dressing of choice (I like Ranch for this salad).

When I was working, I did this a lot when we had pizzas catered in. Some
of the commercial pizzas were even better than my homemade versions!

Poach some chicken breasts and make a big bowl of chick salad
Hard boiled eggs
I buy bulk chick sausage and cook in muffin tin. 2# make 12.

I do something similar to Pami, except I use a small skillet. Dump in any kind of pizza toppings you want, along with mozzarella and a little bit of pizza sauce. Sometimes I add a dash of Italian seasoning and a drizzle of olive oil. Heat everything until the cheese melts and you're good to go!

Pizza toppings in a bowl, yummy!

You know what is actually easy, is the muffin made with flax meal.

You make it in one bowl & I always made up a whole batch of dry ingredients in single serve ziploc bags. Add wet ingredients, mix w/ fork NUKE 1 minute. --eat--

Easy, Good, keeps ya goin' kwim!

Easiest recipe ever... Cheez-its crackers. Makes a meal when paired with soup, cold cuts or any dip such as guacamole, spinach artichoke dip or sour cream ranch dip.

Cut a slice of Kraft Deli Deluxe American cheese into 16 squares. Arrange 1 inch apart on a piece of parchment paper. Microwave 1 minute.



2nd place... BTF Cake (Fantastic Flour mix thread) If you make a big batch of flour ahead of time all you need to do is add flavoring and some kind of liquid to a scoop of flour mix, stir and microwave. And you have CAKE.

I like to brown a pound of breakfast sausage, cook until browned & crumble. Place in bottom of 9" (greased) pie plate.
Beat together 3 eggs & 1 C heavy whipping cream (or half & half) and 8 oz shredded cheddar cheese. Pour mixture over sausage. Bake at 350 for ~30 minutes.

*You can add veggies to meat, if desired.

I made this today. Exactly as you said, not pretty, but was simple, and the family seemed to not mind it.

Beef Florentine Skillet Dinner
 
This was my dinner tonight- if I was making it for DBF, I would have to sub broccoli for the spinach.

1 pound ground beef, browned and drained
1 medium onion, chopped
1 Tablespoon minced garlic
12 ounces frozen chopped spinach
4 ounces cream cheese, cut into 1" cubes
salt and pepper, to taste

Crumble and brown meat with onion and garlic in a medium skillet. Drain and return to skillet.

Add spinach and stir over medium heat until spinach is thawed/cooked. Reduce heat to low.

Drop cream cheese cubes into beef-spinach mixture and cover for 5 minutes.

Once soft and melted, stir cream cheese evenly into beef-spinach mixture.

Taste and adjust seasonings.

Makes 4 servings.

Per Serving (using spinach): 306 Calories; 17g Fat (47.7% calories from fat); 34g Protein;
7g Carbohydrate; 3g Dietary Fiber; 31mg Cholesterol; 148mg Sodium

Per Serving (using broccoli): 308 Calories; 17g Fat (47.3% calories from fat); 34g Protein;
8g Carbohydrate; 3g Dietary Fiber; 31mg Cholesterol; 105mg Sodium.

I make this as a dinner at my house by, using chicken breast that I cook up myself. I have never used the canned chicken and the recipe listed in Post #1 is what I use when I make it. I cook up the chicken one day, then assemble the dip the next. My kids love this!! They request it very often and when chicken breast goes on sale at $1.99 per lb I make it then.

That dip has always looked so delicious to me, yet I've never tried it. I remember my favorite foodie blog reviewing it back in 2008 with the words..."This Dip Will Change Your Life". Haha everyone seemed to love it so much.

I think I'll try it for our 4th of July get-together.

Lately I've been making "garbage stir fry with curried cabbage" from a paleo website (you'll have to Google it - not allowed to link here). I make it with chicken and it's fast and easy.

Whole roast chicken is always good, too, stuffed with herbs.

I don't like cream or cheese sauces, so I generally avoid casseroles, but I have tried some recipes with cauliflower and cheese in a casserole -kind of like mac and cheese - and those are very good.
