I'm an idiot too....

How do I cook the perfect steak?? My late husband cooked the best steak...I used to watch him dry season them, use teriyaki and brush them with butter. But I never did know: FOR HOW LONG do you cook them, for a medium rare 2 inch thick filet, for instance??? DH used to tell me he could feel their weight and just know, but he was a pastry chef....I'm totally messed up with this kind of thing and need to weigh and time things! DO NOT want to spend $25 on one steak and then ruin it!!!:help:
Much appreciate any input as, if I eat one more seafood or chicken dinner I'm gonna have to check for cat ears & whiskers!!! :hyst:

Here are some ideas.

Thank you, soobee!! Sounds like its 4-5 min per side unless its a GF grill which would be about the same for rare......

Sous Vide is the only way I know to get a steak perfect every single time. Check out the link, it's to another thread here, and look down the thread and you'll see some pics of steaks I've made.

Sous Vide has spoiled me. It's idiot proof, and you get perfect steaks. LOL :D

Glad you found it Harriet! I have seen the thread before. And I saw the link to it on the index page just recently, but didn't get it looked at. I didn't go look just now.
Just wanted to let greybb1 know it didn't work.
I guess I need to go look at the thread again, cause I don't remember what a sous vide is! I had just thought I had remembered that it wasn't something I was that interested in. Price maybe? :)

Let me try again.... http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/lo...ipes-tips.html

Charski got her setup for $99 and she uses it with her old crock pot and also an electric roaster she has. You don't have to have a food sealer, but it helps. If you google Dork Foods you should be able to find it.

If you or anyone else has any questions about cooking sous vide, just post your questions in the thread in the link and we'll be happy to help.

Billie, it gives me a idea, though....I can use a slow cooker with a brown in bag
maybe, cook it to the proper temp, and then finish it off in a grill....I don't want to duplicate appliances and it's just me and a 20 pound flame point mitted ragdoll CAT who I'm cooking for, these days...LOL.

crazywoman-n-wy 05-28-2013 08:32 PM

That one works! I had found it on the index page, but later on it may be hidden, and the link will help people find it. So thanks for trying again!!

Sounds like a plan Harriet! I can't see myself buy one, or even the one Charski got. Still too expensive (for me to want to pay), and it just takes too long to fix. I would never remember to put something on that long before I wanted it (especially not every day). But that's me!

Sometimes I'm cooking for just me, and sometimes for 2. (And sometimes for an army -well not really, just seems like it. But that isn't very often, and mostly on holidays now.)
