How to fix it?? I have a jar at home, smoked sausage too. Rinse it first? Add other things to it? I've never made it!:dunno:

I would drain but not rinse.
You might taste the liquid and drink it rather than discarding. Depends on what is in it.

ravenrose 05-01-2013 08:28 AM

a lot of it is very salty. I think rinsing is usually a good idea, but not soaking in water.

you just have to taste it and see. brands vary. many of them are not fermented products but rather just cabbage cooked in vinegar and salt and stuff, I think. the fermented ones might have some benefit to the juice, but not the commercial types.

I agree with ravenrose, ck the ingredients list

You can fry up a sliced onion, bacon, already cooked, if you like and throw in a jar of slightly rinsed kraut add 1/2 cup of water, 2 tbl of butter and let simmer down to where the kraut kind of fries up...delish! you can add some lc brown sugar and it becomes a sweeten version of the above...add some polish sausage or any kind of sausage at the end and you are good to go! I know what I'm having tonite, thanks!

The old man it made by the time I got home!! It was awesome!

I have never seen sauerkraut in a jar. We just buy shredded cabbage and just kinda do it. I must look for this pre-made sauerkraut.

And yes sauerkraut is supposed to be very healthy for you. Something about the fermentation. Sort of like KimChee (sp) (Korean vegetables) and kombuchee drinks

The saurkraut in a jar is usually in the refrigerator section of the store. I much, much prefer it to the canned stuff.

flossie73 05-05-2013 10:02 AM

Ha ha... In our store, there is a brand in a glass jar on the bottom shelf with the canned vegetables.

I used to love Cascadian Farms lower sodium sauerkraut. I haven't found it in a long time--don't know if they make it any more. But if it is naturally fermented, it is supposed to be very good for you. I eat a little sauerkraut every day, straight up.

My very favorite way to have sauerkraut is dump a couple of jars in with a beef roast in my crock pot. Yummy.................................... Ann

We make our own and can it. Yummy! I just pop open a can, pour the juice and all in a pan, chop up some hotdogs, and heat. So easy and LC! Everyone in my house loves it.
