Pork Rind Lovers - Brands? Recipes?

Just checking in to see if anyone has a favorite brand of pork rinds? I bought a couple of cheap bags = not good! Won't be making that mistake again!

Is there a thread somewhere with recipes for pork rinds? I couldn't find one, but I'm sure there is bound to be one here... or please share them with me here! I thought I read something about making "fake" french toast before with pork rinds. That was YEARS ago, but I think it'd be interesting to try out!

Here are a couple of older threads:

This only applies to people living in Texas. I think that HEB's Hill Country Fare is the best tasting brand. They have a nicer texture than other brands and not as many hard bits. They're only $1.50 per bag around here too, which is cheaper than anywhere else, including the dollar store (smaller bags there). The problem is that the HEB that I go to is almost always out of the plain ones, which I prefer over the BBQ or other flavors.

GOLDEN FLAKE Sweet Heat taste just like BBQ pototoe chips.... to me and the hot ones that are tabasco are good too!!!

Mac's! They're cracklins, so they're a bit crispier and just mmmmm good! They sell them at my Walmart :)

I didn't like pork rinds before I started low carbing, but I started making this delicious pizza crust from Linda's site: PORK RIND PIZZA CRUST - Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes
Eventually, I found myself snitching a few while working on the recipe, and eventually I decided I liked them. Another thing that works well is to use finely ground pork rinds instead of bread crumbs in a meat loaf. It makes it nice and moist.

I like HEB's, too, Linda. My second choice is Randolphs that Walmart seems to always carry. I absolutely despise Bakonettes. They always taste "gamey" to me.

That was pretty much my experience too. I used to be a pork rind HATER. They grow on you.

I haven't tried the Randolphs but I've seen them there. I agree 100% about Bakonettes. They're nasty and the most expensive to boot. I wonder why different brands taste different. There are no ingredients to speak of; just oil, pig skin and salt. What's to mess up??? However, they all really do taste different and have different textures.

I love those too but they're expensive and I was finding I could eat half a bag in a sitting. I've had to stop buying them.

For people that have Meijer stores, I really like the Meijer brand BBQ flavor, and their Chili Lime flavor.

I buy the pork rind pellets from Amazon and then bake them in the oven to puff them up. I do a bunch at a time and then grind them up to cook with.

You can cook them in the microwave but I try to avoid the microwave as much as possible.

I've tried to find organic pork rind pellets but so far no luck with that.

My FAVORITE ones are the freshly-made ones from the Mexican market. Hot, crispy, flaky deliciousness!

Other than that I usually buy Mission because they're at almost every store but have recently found the Mac's brand at Grocery Outlet and really like them. Plus, they come in some flavors that Mission doesn't.

As for recipes, I usually just grind them up and mix about half and half with green can Parm cheese to use for breading, or crush them for use in meatloaf and meatballs.

no favorites here.....I coat chicken or fish with mayo, then pat them in crushed pork rinds, and either fry or bake them. Read it on LCF's, don't know who to give credit to, as I read this a long time ago.

Katee is that your pretty Appy in your avatar??

Mule_Freak 04-18-2013 10:20 AM

yes! Meijers brand chilli lime and I love the plain ones are to SO yummy!!! Luckyone, so right you are:love:

if they are cheap and you don't like them plain, grind them up and use them mixed with parmesan cheese for breading or pizza crust. My family loves chicken breast coated with mayo and coated with half pork rinds and parm mix... bake at 400 till brown on both sides(about 20 min or longer each side) flip once...the most tender chicken ever.
