Vanilla extracts?
 
I have artificial vanilla- clubhouse brand and several brands of real madagascar vanilla and a bottle of some clear artificial vanilla, and I'm finding that I really hate the flavor of all the vanilla that I have. I can't find one that tastes like it used to when I was a kid.

what vanilla extract do you all use?

I especially hate the clear vanilla and the madagascar vanillas....

I use Penzey's Mexican Vanilla. I love Mexican Vanilla.
I don't like bourbon or madagascar.

the other type of vanilla is Tahitian Vanilla, a slightly different species of orchid. it tastes markedly different, but very unlikely this what what you had as a kid.

I make my own... 1/5 of cheap vodka, and 3-4 vanilla beans split lengthwise... let it sit undisturbed for a few months. You can keep it going for a loooooong time if you add more vodka everytime you use some of the extract.

I make my own too, but I use a whole bottle of vodka and more vanilla beans. As soon as one bottle is ready, I start another one. The flavor is great and a bottle lasts me a long time. I have a smaller bottle I pour some into for everyday use................... Ann

My favorite is the real Mexican vanilla.
I used to go down at least once a year for a visit and
bring it home by the quart for my friends and myself.
Well I guess those 'were' the good old days.

I do a variation of this... 3-4 vanilla beans split lengthwise, then put into a small glass bottle (a hot sauce sized bottle is perfect), fill with vodka, let sit for a month or two before using, and then just keep adding vodka as you use it. I had my last one for almost 4 years, and am just about to start a new one.
