Lupin Flour?

Just wondering if anyone has used Lupin Flour in baking? One of the blogs I follow (Chocolate Chili Mango) posted a recipe and amazing looking picture of a loaf of bread made from it.

The stats on lupin flour look really good! And it's not too pricey either.

1/4 cup (30g) = 74 calories, total carb 12g, dietary fiber 11g, protein 12g

That bread looks deadly good!

I'm going to place an order this afternoon. Not sure how many lbs to buy though. I'm going to see if maybe my mom wants to split an order with me to cut down on shipping costs.

It does look good but how can the fiber be more than the carbs in the nutritional info.

Is there a supplier in the US, the ones I saw are in Australia.

There is a supplier in California. I googled lupino flour usa and it was the second one that came up.

No idea how the fiber can be higher than the carbs. Strike that, the carbs are higher than the fiber. Carbs are 12 & Fiber is 11

Is this flour made from Lupini beans? If so, Lupini's are very low in carbs and have a high fiber count....they are found in stores all over in the Italian section. I rinse my portion off because they are in a heavy salt brine, but they make a great snack and I have never stalled because of them...Now I am thinking, I wonder if these beans are dried and ground up and made into flour? Thanks! Just wanted to add, I didn't mean to threadjack this....also if you do try them, you just pop them out of their skins and enjoy!

Wow Bella Thanks for the info. Now I have to google some more.

Ok so I just found a place for the beans and it is : for 100gm. = 40 g. of carbs 16 fiber net carbs 24 . They are whole beans. Then I guess you grind thhem up.

Just a FYI ... as I was excitedly checking sites re lupine flour, ran across Info pertaining to allergies ... Google lupine flour allergy, especially if you can't use peanuts.

I'm talking about for the recipe for the bread on the ladies blog. It lists for the whole recipe, plain without added hemp seeds, as 25.9 carbs and 41 fiber. Maybe she's already subtracted the fiber.

Hmmm, now you've got me thinking. I wonder if I can find the flour locally at an Italian Specialty store....

Yaz I bet you can find the bean. Maybe not the flour. I asked my mom and she told me what I was looking for.

I can see how it would be an allergy because it is a bean like peanuts.

Ordered 3 lbs. Also, thanks for that blog site, Yaz. Hadn't seen it before. It's not ALL low carb, but there seems to be a significant number of LC recipes. Going through them now.

I really like her blog, she's got some very interesting recipes. Not all lc but many of them are easily modifiable to lc.

I tried to place an order online but they won't accept a Canadian Billing address so I've left a message on their answering service.

FYI, I ordered mine from a web store called Fooducopia. They're California based. I got 2 emails from them when I ordered, and a 3rd the next day saying it had shipped. Fast service, but not sure how it would work for Canadians.

I talked to them this morning, I'm not able to order from them as I'm in Canada. The guy I spoke to gave me the contact info for the company they get the flour from, hopefully they will be able to process my order.

interesting!

reading about lupini beans, which I was unfamiliar with, I see that they have two warnings: first that they must be processed properly or you can get Lupin poisoning!!! and second that allergies to this stuff are dramatically on the rise and people should be careful. The allergy is closely related to peanut allergy, and those allergic to peanuts should probably avoid these too. there is a second serious reaction of Lupin poisoning that comes from a fungus that can grow on the harvested beans before processing and causes liver damage.

I think commercial preparations of these things are probably pretty safe unless you have an allergic reaction though.

the whole "all fiber" thing sounds good. please report on your experiences using the flour.

as to the carbs in the beans, for "Cento Lupini Beans" presumably canned, 1/4 cup, 3 grams carb and three grams fiber.

At a fancy grocery store in my area, I found canned lupini beans, jarred
and in water. Was I excited, until I tasted them. Big YUK. Hopefully the
flour will be neutral in taste.

I can't wait for mine to get here now. I'm hoping that adding oat fiber to Chocolate Chili Mango's Lupin Protein Bread recipe will result in a nice big loaf of low carb low calorie bread!

I'll be watching this thread. I'm interested to know what it tastes like. One person on another board reported that they thought the taste was "legumey" and the finished bread they made smelled like chick peas. Then on other blogs it got good reviews so I'll be eagerly awaiting your reviews.

From what I've read, it works best as part of a mix of flours. Someone wrote that it had the texture and color of corn bread. It will be so entertaining to hear everyone's results.
