Hearts of Palm

I had forgotten all about these. After seeing a post about Dreamfields Mac n Cheese, I remembered I did a Mockafoni and Cheese last July 4th with hearts of palm. My son didn't like it, but I thought it was pretty good. I'm gonna pick up a few cans to play with when I go grocery shopping again this week.

So if you have any Hearts of Palm recipes, please post.

Hearts of Palm

This is an ez thing to put together.
Add a bit of fresh garlic.
I think one could use them in place of artichoke
hearts in chicken dishes etc.
Another idea is adding chopped palm to crab salad.
This is an underused lc veggie IMHO

EZ Hearts of Palm
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutesIngredients:
•2 cans (about 14 ounces each) hearts of palm
•6 tablespoons butter
•1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
•chopped parsley, optional
Preparation:
Place hearts of palm with liquid in saucepan. Add 1 tablespoon butter; simmer hearts of palm for 12 to 15 minutes. Melt remaining 5 tablespoons butter in a separate saucepan; continue to heat until butter is lightly browned. Add lemon juice. Drain hearts of palm, transfer to a serving bowl and pour browned butter sauce over them. Garnish with parsley, if desired.
Recipe for hearts of palm serves 6.

Maria (the LC blogger) uses it shredded in chicken soup and cream of chicken soup. We really like that application.

I love hearts of palm, but here they cost over $4 a can. and I can snack on a whole can in a heartbeat!

I found them at the 99cent store once....just mentioning it because they get different stuff all the time and most of the time, no repeats.

At Walmart here, they are around $4 per can also. EEK!!

I'm not sure if I've ever eaten it/them. I think I have a can in my "pantry", that I bought, but have never known what to do with it. I think maybe I had seen a recipe using it, found it, bought it, then couldn't remember what or where the recipe was.
So I'm interested in more recipes too. But seems to me, I remember having noticed they were pretty expensive too.

Mmm, they taste like artichoke hearts. Very good as a snack with ranch dressing, or in a salad. I bet they could be chopped up and blended with cheese and it would be similar to the hot artichoke cheese dip.

I am new to the board and was looking for a tasty recipe to use hearts of palm. Thanks for sharing this...it sounds so tasty, going to make it tonight!

I didn't see this before. I also use them as vessels for chunky dips and chopped up in dips. I love hearts of palm.

Check your Hispanic food aisle. Goya makes them, too, for about $2.50 a can (Palmitos) The only ingredients are: Hearts of Palm, Water, Citric Acid, and Salt.

I buy them in large glass jars at Costco and shred in my food processor. I add them to soup as a rice sub. I got the idea from Maria's blog (Maria Health).

Cars don't make good mac and cheese. Maybe a bike would be easier to cut into noodle size.

I found several recipes online just googling "hearts of palm recipes". A lot of dip recipes (like your basic spinach/artichoke dips) and one that looked interesting calling for chopping the hearts of palm and putting them in a baking dish with butter, garlic, parsley and parmesan cheese and baking as a side dish. I may try that because at around 90 calories and 3g net carbs (1 can hearts, 2T butter, 2T parm) and 4 servings per recipe, it looked pretty "friendly".
