Hobo packets

Hubby & I went camping the other week and I made hobo packets and they were excellent and we have never had celery taste so good. We are going again this weekend one last time before the parks close for the season and will make them again.

Question, do you think you can make them in the oven and taste as good?

They taste pretty darn good from the oven, BUT you don't get the "total experience" of being outdoors/roughing it which I think makes stuff like that ALWAYS taste better!

Are you kidding? If it was required to go camping in order to make HOBO's, I'd never have even tried them!

Yes they're great straight out of the oven.

Thanks, I will have to try them some time in the oven. I just can't believe how good the celery tasted DH said the same thing. Can always try them in our fire pit also sometime.

Sandy, are you going to share the recipe with us??? I'm guessing that you put in more than just celery.

gharkness, do you have a general rule of thumb as far as the oven temperature and baking time?

Gee it's been a while, but for hamburger (you can do with chicken or fish, but wouldn't cook as long, I think), I do about 45 minutes at 350 (also depends on what veggies are included). Also, adjust for how cold the meat is when you put it in (like a pre-formed hamburger patty straight out of the freezer would take longer than a hand-formed patty from regular ground beef. I know you know all these things ; just trying to point out some variables.

The recipe is one of those ridiculously hard ones. Throw some meat on a piece of foil (approx 12 X 12) - one for each person. Add hamburger patty (or chicken or fish, or even pork, I suppose). Add seasonings. Add carrot, celery, turnip, you name it - low carb veggies to suit. Season the veggies, too. Seal the foil up into individual packets and put them on a baking sheet. Cook!

You rarely need any added liquid, as the meat contributes plenty of juice.

I did 1 stalk of celery, green squash, green beans, onion, peppers and stew beef pieces, I forgot to put the mushrooms in, then put salt & pepper and some chicken broth since I had that in the frig opened. Wrapped it up a few times in heavy duty foil since it was going on the fire. The fire pit at the campsite had a grill so we put it on that instead of directly in the fire - 15 minutes later we had a nice hot dinner. We flipped the packets every few minutes so they wouldn't burn.

Since we liked the celery so much may do two this time

My mom always made them on the grill at home...and that's the way I make them, too (not a camper!!).
