Love Living Lettuce!

I LOVE living lettuce. It's a little more expensive to buy, but well worth it....and cheaper in the long run! It's lettuce that comes in a plastic container with the root ball still attached.

1. It lasts forever! (10 days - 2 weeks) so you never have to thrown lettuce away.. come on, I know you do!
2. It always tastes great...it's a Boston lettuce, always fresh.
3. You can replant the root and have lettuce again from the same plant a few weeks later....I did! And it worked!!

Available at many grocery stores now...I buy mine at Tom Thumb.

Have any of you tried it?

Honestly? You've grown some more lettuce from the root ball? Can you grow more than one head from it? I have seen it occasionally, but I'll start looking now. That would make it considerably cheaper. Did you grow it outside or inside?

I always buy living butter lettuce. It keeps for weeks and I can just pluck a few leaves here and there for lettuce wraps/cups. The other lettuce I buy isnt living but it doesnt last long anyway with all the salad we eat.

a little more expensive? here it's like $4.69 compared to 69 cents for the regular, which is like 5 times as big as the living one.

if you want to grow lettuce, I bet getting a packet of the mixed baby lettuce seeds would be more fun!

and no, actually... I can't think of the last time we threw out any lettuce. I did chuck the last 2" of a celery a few weeks ago though.

buy a packet of baby lettuce seeds, rocket etc as well. they grow great all summer and u can keep on picking right into the winter as they are inside.

also over here (UK) u can buy mixed packs of lettuces that are already planted and u can pick them for ages too, lot more expensive than just buying the seeds tho

i plant mine in peat in a small plastic container (one that can fit on your windowsill in the kitchen is fine) i reuse the ones i buy mushrooms etc in lol

I've seen it but always balked at the price. Romaine is my favorite lettuce and I usually do a Baby Spinach and Romaine Lettuce Mix for my salads. I might try the living lettuce though since you can replant it.

So did you plant it in dirt or in water? Around here, they are usually hydroponic lettuces. Just curious.
Here, they are around $4+ per head and regular lettuce is about $1.15 and I can eat the whole head of living lettuce for dinner. LOL
It takes me four dinners to eat the iceberg lettuce up, so it's what I usually buy except for an occasional treat.

OK..I'll answer some questions.
1. I do put it outside in the garden. Right now I have 2 of them with beautiful leaves that have sprouted from root balls.
2. I'm surprised it's so expensive for some of you! For the last few months here in Texas at Tom Thumb, it has always been $2.99 for really big heads.
3. Thanks for the idea about the baby butter seeds. I'll try that too!
4. This lettuce is great for making Thai lettuce wraps. I put some chicken or whatever and some homemade LC peanut sauce in a lettuce leaf and YUM!!
EnJOY!
