How much butter in a 'stick'?

I've seen recipes that call for a 'stick' of butter. I assume this is a US measurement. Can you tell me what this equates to in ounces/grams/cups (melted or hard)? I want to get cracking with the cooking but am not sure about this quantity. Thanks in advance.

4 ounces in a stick and is equal to 1/2 cup

most butter here is sold by the pound, in a box with 4 wrapped sticks in the box.
