What's the difference between turnips, parsnips and rutabagas?

Flavorwise, texture, yum factor? TIA!

I don't think I've ever had turnips or parsnips but I just tried rutabagas for the first time not too long ago....very much like a potato with a better flavor! Even my son who hates most veggies eats it!

They vary widely in carbs. The least for the turnips, in the middle for the rutabagas, and the most for parsnips. Parsnips are sweet tasting and almost everyone likes them. They are too high carb for my plan, so I never eat them. Rutabagas are wonderful substitutes for potatoes in stews and casseroles. Turnips are a little sharper, but people have had good luck by parboiling them in cream or milk, and then using them in recipes. There's a great thread on scalloped turnips.

We love all three! And most especially - all three, mashed together, with butter and a splash of cream.

Yes, parsnips are at the higher end of the carb count.

You can cut some of that by using any or all of the above root veggies mixed half with cauliflower, then mashed. I cube up the root veggies, nuke with a tiny bit of water til about tender, then throw the fresh cauliflower, cut into florets, on top and nuke til THEY are very tender, then drain well and mash right in the same dish with my immersion blender, adding the butter and cream as needed. A little salt and freshly-ground pepper and you're good to go.

We just finished off a pot of mashed rutabagas/cauliflower last night. Even my picky (adult) stepson ate some and liked it!

i love turnips! i love them boiled and then put salt and pepper with alittle butter on them or just seaoning salt. sue
