Sesame oil...good or bad?

So is it good for you....or bad? I'm talking heart healthy good or bad.

I thought it was good for you, but when we recently went to a Mongolian restaurant, when I asked for mine to be seasoned with sesame oil, the man looked at me oddly. Let me back up.....I noticed they cook with a large bottle of some type of oil. I asked what kind it was. His reply was a vegetable oil blend. I asked if he could not use that in our meals. He said he could steam ours with very little oil. GREAT! Then when it's almost finished cooking they ask what kind of flavoring you want. That's when I choose sesame oil, mostly because I thought it was good for me. After he said "are you sure because I thought you wanted healthy", I figured I wasn't as informed as I thought I was. I then choose soy sauce. I like soy sauce but was trying to stay away from all of the sodium. My weight is always up the day after eating soy sauce. Water weight I'm pretty sure but I hate to see the numbers up!!

My husband has past heart issues and he's now doing LC too with us and I'm TRYING to help him lose weight and keep a healthy heart. I don't know if I'm doing so good! BTW....he's down 11 pounds in one week and I'm JEALOUS!!!

Thanks so much in advance for your information on this subject!

Sorry I'm not exactly answering your question, but gosh I hope sesame oil is a good choice! I'm living in Asia right now and just recently got turned on to it.. now I use it daily for absolutely everything that I used to use olive oil for.. it adds a great flavor that I love. My concern with it is of course firstly whether it's a heart healthy choice, but also whether it's something that may potentially stall since it's made from a seed/grain/legume (I think sesame is a seed?) anyway, I wonder whether it's an okay choice for induction.. consuming sesame oil isn't exactly the same as eating plain old seeds/ nuts.. or is it? hmm
I'll be watching this topic for sure

It's possible that, when you rejected the vegetable oil, he though you wanted your food prepared "low fat." He may not have been aware that some oils are better for one's health health.

Make sure you use the kind made from roasted sesame seeds, usually a Chinese version. Better tasting for sure. Make sure you apply the oil off-heat or at VERY end of cooking.

The FDA database shows roasted/toasted sesame seeds at 3.3 net carbs per gram. Mostly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Couldn't find sesame seed OIL.

The Eades said in their tv cooing program that sesame seeds were really good for you. I forget all the reasons why. But they stick sesame seeds in everything they can. Sesame seeds are mostly oil and fiber. So sesame oil should be all right.

When/where is their TV program on? I was aware they had one (can find the recipes for it) but can't find the program. Thanks!

Bad or not it tastes so darn good in stirfries and other Asian inspired dishes.

And a little goes a long way.

I'm not sure it's still being broadcast. Too bad because we LOVED their show!

You can always go to their website and find out though.

Mary Enig (author of Eat Fat Loose Fat) uses an oil blend of virgin coconut oil, EVOO, and unrefined sesame oil. I think unrefined sesame oil has a lot of naturally occurring antioxidants and doesn't rancify as quickly as other oils. It is an omega 6 oil though, so if you don't eat oily fish regularly or take cod liver oil it could imbalance the Omega 3:6 oil ratio.

Thanks Charski. I have gone to their web and there is no mention of the broadcast. They do have all the recipes posted there (under CookwoRx) and they have one VHS for sale for episodes 4-6 but that is it. There is also a link to contact them about when the DVD will be out, so I will do that. That would be great to be able to buy all 26 episodes on DVD. It was broadcast on PBS and can't find any mention of it on their web site either. It must be long gone by now. Bummer.

The Eades cooking program is called Cookworx. Episodes are run from time to time on our Create station, not on our local public stations unfortunately. Keep an eye out for the episode. They still run them ( like Daisy Cooks, which another member mentioned) even though there are no new episode. I believe they did 2 seasons worth.I bought the cookbook, and it is worth getting.
