deli lunch meats

how long to deli lunch meats typically stay good in the fridge? I always get sketched out if its been in there longer than a week but I don't eat it fast enough.

I would call the deli where you made your purchase and ask them. I would think it would depend on how the meat was prepared.

I divide mine into serving sizes and freeze most of it. But Walkingwoman has the best idea. I doubt if the store discards the meats after a week. I bet theirs have preservatives in them.

I keep deli meat no more than 7 days in the refrigerator. I freeze 3 or 4 slices, depending on thickness in individual sandwich bags and then freeze them flat in a container. When the kids or DH are packing a lunch, they take out one pack and put together a sandwich.

I can take out a sandwich bag and make roll-ups or chop up for an omelet.

My neighbor works for Boar's Head, which in my opinion is the best deli meat out there. I asked him this question a while ago and he told me to NEVER freeze deli meat, it changes the texture and flavor way too much, it isn't meant to be frozen. As for storage...no more than 5 days.

I've frozen it many times and haven't noticed a change in texture or flavor.

I've never read anywhere that its not safe to freeze it. Just that it can change the taste and/or texture. If the potential change doesnt bother you, I say freeze some!

I never said it wasn't safe. As a matter of fact I was wrong about storage...no more than 3 days. You can read it here:

Sorry if my post was misunderstood. I wasn't implying that anyone said it was unsafe to freeze. I was just trying to tell the origanl poster that safety is not a concern with it, just the potential for the taste and texture changes.

Maybe, but I won't eat chicken or turkey breast after 3 days, I don't like when it gets slimy . As for bologna, salami or ham sometimes you can get 5 days and sometimes more.

I've never noticed any change in taste/texture from freezing deli meats but then I'm no expert. They don't even sell Boar's Head around here. I wish they did.
