Carbquick corrected carb count.....

Just got off the phone with Carbquick people.....

according to the TOVA rep....the carb count has been corrected and what is on the box is correct.

On the box it states...17g of dry mix is 2 net carbs....so the original calculations by the TOVA REP were wrong and by following the correct figures on the box 1 cup with 110g is just under 13 net carbs.

I was assured ChefGreg (who in an email yesterday told me 13 net carbs for 1 cup) and the 'TOVAREP' are aware of this...this is a fairly new correction....I got the impression like within the last couple of days....

The carb count for 1 cup of carb quick is just under 13 net carbs

They are suppose to email me a copy of the email showing the correction.

I am so glad we got this straightened out.

Wanted everyone to have the corrected figures.....

Thanks everyone for your help....

So, if anyone wants the correct numbers to enter into MasterCook, here they are:

1 CUP CARBQUIK (110 grams by weight):
323.53 calories
22.65 grams fat
58 carbs
45.3 grams fiber
19.41 grams protein
12.7 net carbs

That's for 1 cup lightly spooned into a measuring cup, not packed and tapped down.

Patti, thanks so much for all the trouble you went to for this. I've been using LindaSue's counts in MasterCook for a while now, and I'm very glad I did. It's so nice that all the confusion is now set straight.

Dear Michelle,

Thanks for your confidence and kind words.

It is true that we are tweaking with the formula of Carbquik®. We have already removed all hydrogenated oils and trans-fats from the product, and we are coming out soon with an all-natural version of the product as well.

Regarding the carb count, since we have continuously improved the product, different versions of the product may have slightly different nutritional values as displayed on the packaging.

Our current product as shipped in all pack sizes has the following net carbs:

Per 1 oz. (28.35g.) 3.3g.

Per 1 cup (110g.) 13g.

I hope this helps

Subject: Carbquik is FANTASTIC! I have questions

Hi!

First, THANK YOU a thousand times for developing Carbquik, it is a WONDERFUL product and a Godsend to us low carbers!

We're puzzled over the nutrition labels of the boxes for biscuits. One label calls for 17 gm and the other 20 gm of mix.

Could you please send me a definitive nutrition breakdown (including net carbs) for 1 oz and 1 cup measures of just the mix? PLEASE! :-)

Also, we read somewhere that you were tweaking the mix's recipe to further reduce net carbs and/or calories? Are you? Did you? What were/will be the results?

Thank you for giving me your time.

However different formulations might have different nutritional information -- I know my box of Carbquik that I purchased last week has different info. on the nutritional panel.

And when I called Tova with the exact same ????'s they gave me different nutritional information.

Tessie....I have to tell you that I basically got into an argument with the young woman that answered the phone. She read me the same numbers that both Scott and you had given me and posted on the board (which I really appreciated)....I asked her to explain to me how she got the 6.1 figure for net carbs...she told me she had a chart....I asked her to explain the figures on the box then....I gave her my take on the figures....if 17 grams of the mix = 2 net carbs then 110 grams can't be 6.1....please explain....she couldn't....I explained how I was getting my figures...she kinda understood but then put me on hold to go check with her supervisor.....when she came back she stated that she gone to talk with him and he was gone, she called him on his cell and in fact, the 13 carb count was correct and referenced the email sent out last week. I told her about our message board and she referenced ChefGreg and the TovaRep. I thanked her and asked her to send me a copy of the email, and she did.

So I can imagine your frustration....cause if I hadn't argued with her a bit (and she was very nice through it all) and basically said that I love the product, but the numbers aren't adding up....I would have hung up thinking that the 6.1 carb per cup was right, when it fact it is wrong.

Ok I have my box right here and according to my calculations my nutritional label would be close to the 6 ecc per cup.

Follow along is you like

From the label

17 g dry mix (17/28 = 0.61 oz.)

50 cals.
3.5 g fat
9 g carb
7 g fiber
2 g net carb
3 g protein

----------------------------

1/3 c. dry mix

100 cals.
7 g fat
18 g carb
16 g fiber
2 g net carb
7 g protein

-------------------------------

1 c. of bake mix from my box weighed = 3.7 oz.

3.7 oz = 1 c.
1.23333 oz. = 1/3 c.
0.61666 oz. = 17 g or 1 biscuit

My label appears to be correct! If you take into account the margin of error for rounding.

Again guys, I am only going by what they told me....I don't think they would say 13 if in fact it was only 6....doesn't make sense.

Tessie if your box says 17g and 2 carbs then it is the 13 carb per cup box. I don't understand if you are saying you think according to your calculations it is only 6....pardon my math density LOL!

But in calculations that I understand.....it would be.....

110g (total g in a cup) divided by 17g (# of g per serving) = 6.47
6.47 (# of servings in one cup) times 2 (# of carbs per serving) = 12.94 carbs per cup. Which is the 13 the are saying it has.

Here is the email from ChefGreg....

Can you give me a correct carb count on say 1 cup of carbquick?

I have looked all over this board and can't seem to find it listed anywhere....on the box it talks about biscuits....

Just need to know how many carbs are in 1 cup of this great product...

Thanks!

==================================

I suppose rounding can make that much of a difference....I remember with the Bob's Red Mill flaxmeal.....a post of mine from earlier....

"My mother just got off the phone with the people from Bob's Red Mill. We love Spongebob's Flaxmeal bread and really wanted to find out how many carbs are in 2 cups of their ground flaxmeal. The bag says 4 carbs - 4 fiber.....but we all know about hidden carbs and the fact that they can show 0 if its below .5 carbs.

Alrighty....for 2 cups of their ground flaxmeal....its 70 carbs and 59 fiber.....net of 11 carbs in this recipe for the flaxmeal."

So thats listed as 0 carbs....but for one cup it was actually 5.5 net carbs!

Sure wish they would just put what it actually is in the labels and forget all this rounding and > or < junk!

Damn...it is good stuff though!!

Patti, I follow your math, and you are correct. The real discrepancy comes in the calories!!

According to the box:
17g is 50 calories, and 1/3 cup is twice that, or 100 calories, then 1 cup equals 300 calories.

But, 6 times the nutritional info (6 X 17 = 1 cup) on the box is:
........21 g of fat is.......189
........54 g of carbs is...206
and....18 g of protein is..76
I get a total of 471 calories from this.

Now I am not a slave to calories, but there surely is a discrepancy.
Bette

As I said in the other thread on this subject, no one is taking into account the rounding up that's occuring. Carbquik isn't 2 net carbs per 17 g serving, it's less than 2 net carbs, rounded up to 2 for regulation's sake. The actual numbers give you a carb count of 6.1 net carbs/cup.

I'll put money on it

I can't find my figures right now and I'm not sure I saved them, but one day I played with the numbers in about 6-8 different ways. I rounded up and down in various configurations. Out of all those possibilities, only ONE gave a count of 6 net carbs per cup. Every other one gave between 12 and 13. Sure, it could turn out that that one was the true count, but I'm still going to play it safe. I really don't see why they would use a higher count than they needed to on the label when it would be to their benefit to give the lowest possible count. We're not talking about one or two carbs here, but double the amount. That's a huge difference.

Scott....that thread is from December......this week the company said it is 13 carbs.

The nutritional data on the box is from a lab and regulated by the FDA.....all other information on the box is basically advertising.

On the thread you listed, in his post the Tova rep stated he'd come back at weeks end....back in December....

"This discrepancy has to do with FDA guidelines. By their guidelines, Net Carbs have to equal Total Carbs - Fiber. Since those are each rounded, this is where the discrepancy comes from.

The panel lists 10g carbs and 8g fiber. There could be (for example) 9.5g carbs and 8.4g fiber. This would have to round (by guidelines) to 2 net carbs even though it's closer to 1. I'll get you the specific numbers by the end of the week.

Last edited by TovaRep on 12-15-2004 at 11:13 PM"

==========
He doesn't come back and post until 2/27/05....and he never addresses it again.

In December is when all the original questions about the product carb count came up...personally I believe a mistake was made back then....printed on the boxes.....ChefGreg and TovaRep were originally saying 6.1 net carbs.....then around the first of the year their mistake was discovered and they have corrected it.

As of this week they said it is 13 carbs....both the ChefGreg and TovaRep guy via phone with me and a follow up email.....

I am going to go with the 13 carbs to be safe.....please feel free to count whatever number you are comfortable with.

This math calculations is hurting my head so early in the morning....

Have a good one!

Linda Sue,

I am new to using Mastercook......... How do you get the net carbs into it? Or are you just figuring it out on your own by subtracting the fiber?

Thanks

The Tova Rep posted this in response to the CQ 3 lb box being even lower in carbs.

Carbquik Carb counts

amount grams ounces net carbs

1 tsp 2 0.07 0.1

1 TBS 6 0.21 0.3

1/4 cup 27.5 0.97 1.5

1/3 cup 36 1.27 2

1/2 cup 56 1.98 3

2/3 cup 71.5 2.52 4

3/4 cup 82.5 2.91 4.5

1 cup 110 3.88 6.1

I'm with you Scott123, According to this chart, it should only be 6.1 net carbs per cup.

Aediekins....that post from the Tova Rep is from December....

this week I wrote ChefGreg (see the email in my post above)...he stated it is 13 carbs in a cup.....

and in turn, I called and talked with the company, the girl couldn't explain the figures she was giving me so she went to her supervisor and they called the Tova Rep on his cell, while I was on hold, and he too stated it was 13 carbs per cup. (see copy of email that the company sent out to another consumer questioning the carb count above)

I guess I am just going to believe the company, the chef and the Tova rep and count it as 13 net carbs per cup.

Better safe than sorry for my calculations.....

I wish they would get their story straight! Oh well.

So then a 1/2 cup should be 6.5 net carbs
1/4 cup 3.25 net carbs
1/8 cup about 1.5 net carbs

Is that how you would calculate it?

Based on what they say... about 13 carbs in a cup....
yes to your figures except the 1/8 cup would technically be 1.625 carbs....(can ya tell I am anal sometimes! LOL!)

And it is still way better than the old Bisquick carb amounts.

I didn't have a calculator... so that's why I put "about" 1.5 carbs. I'm surprised I was so close! (I suck at math!)

Patti, who was the 'girl' who called TovaRep on the phone? Was it Shannon? When I spoked to Shannon yesterday, she didn't know who tovarep was and had to ask someone. The person she asked about the carb count was the owner/president of the company, not Tovarep.

The only one that knows the story behind the true numbers for this product is Tovarep and so far, from what I can tell, no one has spoken to him (he's unreachable by phone).

There are two factors that cause me to be absolutely certain this is 6.1 carbs/cup:

1. All of the new numbers are based on carbquik being exactly 2 net carbs per 17 g serving. Exactly 2 net carbs. Not 1.9 or 2.1 or even 2.25. The odds that the carb count IS exactly 2 net carbs and no rounding has occured are about a million to one. Someone who doesn't understand the imprecision of nutritional labeling is mistakenly looking at the label and grabbing a calculator. It doesn't work that way. They don't have the piece of the puzzle that tovarep has, so they go to the only info they do have - the box, which doesn't have the entire picture.

2. The reformulation that's occured could NEVER have doubled the carbs from the last four months. 'Tweaking' means removing the hydrogenated oil and lowering the salt content - that's tweaking. Doubling the carbs would signify a complete reformulation. This hasn't occured.

Somewhere out there, I'm sure that there are people counting 48 net carbs per cup of splenda "just to be safe." I guess when a person gets conflicting carb information, it's tempting to just pick the higher number and go on with their life. I can't work that way. I need to know the truth. And I'm going to keep on top of these people until I get it.

Here is the other thing -- with the amount of CQ that I have been using & consuming in playing with recipes and stuff -- I have remained in ketosis.

I log in ****** my intake everyday! So I know exactly how much of this stuff and other stuff I am eating. IF the net carbs were higher then my calculated 6.1 g per cup, I would have moved way beyond my "CCL" which I know to be about 30g. (prior to the introduction of CQ in my diet). And I would NOT be in ketosis.
