FRIED DOUGH

I BELIEVE THIS IS KIND OF A REGIONAL THING, BUT IN NEW ENGLAND IT WAS VERY POPULAR. WE ONLY HAD IT ON HOLIDAYS FOR BREAKFAST. I WAS WONDERING IF THERE WAS SOMEWAY TO MAKE THIS WITH CARBQUIK.

My guess is that with Carbquick, if it could be done, the end result would be more like fried bannock (basically a bisquit). This is still very good, but not much like fried bread dough. My Grandma used to make dough gods for lunch - blueberry, or Saskatoon berry for dessert. Yum. I think that part of the wonderfulness of this dish came from the yeast (much like a donut). I'll be interested to see if ChefGreg can come up with something similar. Maybe you should ask him?

Thanks Beeb for bringing that thread up! I agree, these are delicious! I made them last winter, and made a chocolate glaze to put on them and they were so good, but I didn't know what I'd done with the recipe. I remember people subbed different things for the bake mix, so Carbquik might work if you don't have the bake mix called for.
