other names for chayote

For folks who have not been successful locating chayote squash maybe this will help. It's also called "vegetable pear". In France it's called "christophene" and in Louisiana and Mississippi (and maybe other parts of the south) it's called "mirlton" pronounced "mel-e-taun".

Grace this is off the subject but would you know the carb count on cactus pears ? I use to love these when I lived in Vegas.

I got mine under the name chayote. I don't know how to pronounce it. It's wonderful.

are cactus pears tuna? because then those are pretty high in carbs

but nopalitos, the cactus paddles, are very low in carbs. all the info i found on both agrees with this

Argo2D - yes - cactus pears are tunas. Where did you find the carb count? I've looked many times because sometimes when I'm shopping in areas of Guadalajara where I don't trust the street food I'll buy a bag of peeled tunas (probably 6-8 to a bag) instead of fruit that I know to be high in carbs like pineapple and mangoes. I was kinda' hoping they fell more into the vegetable category since they are part of the nopal but I guess that was just wishful thinking, huh! They also sell bags of cucumbers and jicama so I guess I'll buy those instead. But I really would appreciate knowing where you found the carb count. Thanks!
