Does Flax Seed go bad?

I have had an opened bag of flax seed in my cupboard for...yikes...3 years? I guess it's time to throw it out, and head to the store!

If it's the whole seeds, it's OK. If it's ground seed, pitch it.

Boy - ditto on keeping it in the freezer. I just had to throw out a container full in my pantry because it got moths (grrr!).

I had kept it in a zip lock bag in my cupboard. It had been in there since 2001! I ground some up today, and it seemed fine!

I am going to buy a new bag though...

Actually even though the unground will last longer than the ground seed it should only be stored up to a year. See the following:

How should I store flax seed and for how long will it keep?

Whole flax seed
Whole flax seed comes with Nature’s own finest packaging – its natural hard hull keeps it fresh. You can store clean, dry, good quality whole flax seed at room temperature for up to a year. Some people keep a jar of flax seed handy on their kitchen counter.

Ground flax seed

All vegetable oil products require some care in handling and storing. Once you grind flax seed, there is greater risk of it developing an off-flavour and taste. That’s why it’s best to grind whole flax seed as you need it. This ensures its freshness. After grinding, you should refrigerate it in an airtight, opaque container. Ground flax seed handled this way will keep for up to 90 days.

I made some flaxeed muffins last week end and did not refrigerate them and by Wednesday they had a funny smell. I think next time I'll refrigerate them after baking.

You definitely want to refrigerate or freeze any baked products as there are no preservatives to prevent them from spoiling.
