Tomato Paste vs Tomato Sauce

I found a recipe to make my own LC ketchup, but yet I see a lot of posts where you are supposed to avoid tomato sauce....does anyone know why???

The only reason I can see to avoid tomato sauce or tomato paste is because tomatoes are naturally high in sugar. No sugar is added to either product, so you can use them if you watch your portions. Tomato paste is very concentrated so it is carb dense. A tiny 6 ounce can has 24.5 net carbs. Tomato sauce isn't so bad at about 11 net carbs per 8 ounce (which measures 3/4 cup liquid, by the way and not 1 cup as you would think).

Here's my favorite low carb ketchup recipe:

BETTER "HEINZ" KETCHUP
6 ounce can tomato paste
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup vinegar
5 teaspoons Splenda or about 1/8 teaspoon liquid Splenda
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
Very tiny pinch or up to 1/8 teaspoon each ground cloves, cinnamon and garlic powder

Mix all ingredients well. Be sure to add the spices. They are important for that "Heinz" flavor.
Makes 1 1/3 cups

Made with granulated Splenda:
1 cup - 23 usable carbs
1/4 cup - 6 usable carbs
1 tablespoon - 1.5 usable carbs
1 teaspoon - .5 usable carbs

Made with liquid Splenda:
1 cup - 21.5 usable carbs
1/4 cup - 5.5 usable carbs
1 tablespoon - 1.5 usable carbs
1 teaspoon - .5 usable carbs

Thanks, LindaSue. I tried making my own ketchup and it was okay at first, but toooooooo tomatoey. I will give your recipe a try
