Calories 10 x4 =40
fat 0
sat fat 0
carbs 1 x4 =4
fiber 1x4 =4

so unless you don't deduct fiber these are free IMO.

You buy these at an Aisan market, they are located next to produce. The bigger the market the better chance you'll find them, some of our smaller markets don't carry them. They have no real taste of their own, they pick up any flavor you put them in. Soups are great with these and stir frys are killer with them too. I use these for chicken alfredo,spaghetti,stir frys, and soups. They will last a tad over 1 month in the frig.

I just bought a couple packages of these today and am anxious to try them. The pkg. is 8 ounces and says 4 servings with net carb at 0. Can't beat that? Now, I hope they taste okay...

noodles

I made these this weekend with sort of a white bolognese sauce.. ground beef sauteed until brown and then added some nuked creamcheese, a touch of half n half and lots of grated paremesan.... it was delicious!

Made baked spaghetti (baked shiraghetti??) with them yesterday. Excellent.

Mine were the tofu/yam noodle shiritaki. 1g carb, 1 gram fiber = 0 net carbs.

I grossed myself out!

After reading this post last week I went to one of the Japanese stores here in Los Angeles. I bought 3 packages knowing I'd love them. That first day I washed them in hot water, drained them and put some lc marinara on them. Added some parm and loved it.

Over the weekend I opened the second package, smelled that kinda fishy smell, got grossed out but proceeded to rinse etc. I added them to the crockpot in which I was making a pot roast. They looked gross all over my pot roast. Also, I couldn't get that fishy smell out of my mind!

Anyway, the moral of the story is, I think I will be passing on the "fish noodles" for awhile.

You know, it's funny, the kinda mind trip I put on this. I don't know why they would smell "fishy" since it's a tuber and nothing representative of fish whatsoever!

The water in the bag always smells like fish, but don't be afraid of that, these are wonderful as a stir fry, just jump in and go for it.

I grew up eating this in japan. Usually it's cooked in soups and stir-frys. Every Thanksgiving, my mom would make turkey soup with shirataki noodles and sheetake mushrooms (the board wouldn't let me spell it correctly).
The noodles are almost flavorless, but it picks up the other flavors of the dish you cook it in.
You can remove the fishy smell by cooking it in plain boiling water for about 3 minutes then drain it.

Made Sarah's Pad Tai

I purchased a pkg of the shiratake last week. My DH said don't feed them to me!
Well, tonight I made the Pad Tai, but I added chinese cabbage, snow peas, and chicken instead of shrimp. And I used the pkg of shiratake. It was wonderful, and my picky DH also said it was wonderful. Guess I will be making this again!

Just to tell you, I thik the fishy smell might come from the Pickling Lime? I dunno.

How much have you guys bought these for at an asian market? I found a site where its about $2.25 a pound (buy 20 1 lb bags at $35 + $10 S&H). I'd like to know if I'd be able to find them cheaper at just a store though...

Love it spicy.. they usually serve it with bean sprouts on the side and peanuts on top.. gawd pad tai is good!

How much protein per serving? There would need to be 9 grams per serving to make the calories work out (and for there to be nothing hidden.....40 minus 4 equals 36 calories leftover)

I ADORE shiratake noodles. I like them better than low carb pasta or Dreamfields. These are truly low carb, bland noodles that suck up the flavor of whatever you put on them.

If you live in Southern California, Whole Foods Market has them. And good news! They carry House brand, an oriental company who just came out with Fettucine shaped Shiratake noodles, a thick cut of noodle that I like even better than the "spaghetti" noodles.

Folks, this stuff is great - you have to try it to believe it. It's very filling and just like eating spaghetti and much lower in carbs than even low carb pasta.

The brand Whole Foods Market carries, the House brand, only has 2 net carbs per bag. It's found by the tofu in the refrigerated section of the market. Try it. I am totally hooked!

P.S. My hubby wouldn't touch them either.

I cooked them up, smothered them with meatballs and sauce, didn't say what they were...and he was so happy that I was giving him "spaghetti" again! Gotta love that husband (even if I did trick him)!!!!

ok, about the smell. When you open them they will have a rich seaweed smell, something us Americans are not used to.

This is how to get rid of it. Drain from package. Put noodles in pot, cover with water, bring to boil and parboil for 3 minutes. Drain well. That's it! Smell is gone and "spaghetti" is now ready for sauces, etc.

Tater Head! That was a great shot of the noodle package! Folks will really know what to look for now.

Also, if you folks can find the House website, sorry I don't have it with me, and if you email them, they will send you a list of the stores in your area that carries the Shiratake.

They are a great company and emailed me back the next day, telling me of all the stores in my area carrying it, and letting me know they were coming out with the fettucine shaped noodles and one of the stores in my area was doing a demonstration. Very friendly folks. Hope you find the website. If not, let me know and I'll find it for you and give you the address (sorry I don't know how to link yet).

Hi..

I had bought some in Wichita at an Asian Food Market..they only had the tofu shiratake..I just drained and rinsed them very well...then plopped them in a pan with butter..and stirred them around..put some parmesan cheese on them..Absolutelymdelicious..Today I added some sfree spaghetti sauce..I'm totally sold..

I ordered from kon-jac the regular shiritake noodles---the fettucine style..Hope I like them as well as I did the tofu..

My "kids" are on WW and this would be a zero point food, I think..

Carolyn, I'll have to try your recipe, it looks so easy as a side dish, thanks.

You have to try my stirfry sometime, hubby says it's just like resturant style and he loves it. This recipe was for my single son who doesn't want to do anything but open cans lol. When i make it, I usually fry up fresh chicken or pork chops. You could try and add your own seasonings instead of the packet of top ramen. I buy chicken flavor ramen soup at the dollar store and just throw out the noodles and keep the packets.

"Tater's Stirfry"

Throw everything in a large frying pan then turn on the heat. This is fast and easy to make.

2 tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup sesame seed oil
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp fresh garlic (jar)
1/4 cup mixed bell peppers (chopped) I use frozen mix from (Trader Joes)
2 cups shredded Napa or regular cabbage
1 packet top ramen seasoning (I know starch)
1 can cooked chicken (or fresh)
1 drained and rinsed bag of Tofu/shirataki noodles-cut up a little using a pair of scissors.

toss everything in frying pan for about 5 minutes or until cabbage is wilted . Add some chopped green onions on top right before your serve it.

I adore Shiratake. There's a huge thread on it over in the Main Low Carb Lobby.

Depending on the variety, it's virtually carb free or extremely low in carbs. A great substitute for pasta.
