Flaxseed Meal tastes bitter..help

This is a question that I have wanted to ask you folks...I buy
Bob's Red Mill flaxseed meal and..it does taste a little bitter to
me. I'm wondering if that is unusual..is it me?? Is it less bitter
if you grind your own?? Help...

I keep it in the fridge all the time.

I just bought a bag the other day, but haven't opened it yet. I'll let you know if mine tastes bitter too once I do. Maybe yours had gone rancid before you bought it.

Mine never tastes bitter. It can go rancid easily like nuts (so I hear) so I store mine in the frig.

Carolyn - I've had bitter flax meal both ways-- home ground and Bob's. I have no clue if it's rancid or what. I keep it in the freezer now. Even frozen, my home ground cereal tastes a little bitter to me, and it's been frozen since I ground and mixed it up. If you find a good answer, let me know!

It should taste nutty, not bitter. As others said, it goes bad easily. I always store mine in the freezer...

Carolyn, I agree with you, Bob's Red Mill flaxseed meal was horrible. It left a yucky aftertaste in my mouth. I usually buy Spectrum Essentials, which is wonderful, but Bob's was by far cheaper. So I thought I would try it. No thanks, I will pay more.

When I buy flax from Trader Joe's, they taste bitter. It was going to expire in 2 months. When I buy them from Wild Oats or Whole Foods, they don't expire for almost a year, and they have no bitter taste whatsoever. So I think it depends on where you buy them from.

The results of my experiment

I bought some Bob's Red Mill Flaxseed today and ground
it in my coffee grinder..What a huge difference in taste...
Huge...I taste tested them side by side.

The seeds that were ground were very sweet and good..the
flaxseed meal tasted okay for a second, then got bitter..
I think that stuff goes bad really fast...

So, I'll be grinding my own..It's cheaper anyway.

Golden Flax Seed

I have kept golden flax seed in the cupboard for months and get no bitterness when it is ground. I grind only when needed and then keep any leftovers in the refrigerator. I think the golden, rather than the dark, seeds are less bitter and less intensly flavored than the dark.

I called them yesterday and they apologized and said sometimes
that happens..the seeds get rancid..and they are sending me
some new stuff... So if you have this problem, give them
a jingle.
