Please don't take any chances! I got salmonella once and thought I was going to die...I never take a chance with chicken. It's not worth the $6 to replace the chicken. Please, please throw it away if you think it might be borderline.

Now I'll drink milk for days after the exp. date but I take no chances on the chicken...

For that matter, how long can a rib-eye stay in the fridge? I just got back from the grocery store and have a rib-eye I plan on cooking tomorrow. Can I just keep it in the fridge? Or must I freeze it and thaw it out tomorrow afternoon? Thanks!

Not an official answer....but I usually figure two days after it is thawed. A lot depends on how fresh it was when it was frozen. If I take chicken out of freezer on a Friday morning and put in fridge I figure it will be thawed by Saturday and I better use it by Sunday, Monday at the latest. I suppose it should have the remainder of the "use by" time from when it was frozen but being chicken I don't like to push it.

Wash it extra good if it smells AT ALL or is spongie feeling trash it..usually 2 days after thawed is about it

The rib eye should be fine as long as it is not out of date and kept refridged

Don,
I'll keep fresh rib eye in fridge all the way to the expire or use by date and if it smells OK even a little beyond. I hate to freeze beef I know I will be using fairly soon. Bacteria does not penetrate steaks very well so if cooked at high temp it is relatively safe. In fact steaks on the edge often have a better flavor but make sure about internal temp well into the meat. As noted ina post above chicken is a much bigger worry (and cheaper to replace). Beef ages better.

I am a scaredy cat. I use it within a day of taking out. I take out the meat the day before and use it or throw it. Im such a chicken when it comes to that. If i buy meat at the store on sunday and it is fresh I go by the exp. date to see when I should either freeze it or use it. And I would never use milk past the exp date. Im glad they put those dates on packages. Although I probably waste a lot of food that way. But better to be safe than sorry.
