Thank you for your inquiry.

The following may be helpful -

Everyone has a different intake so that giving percentages of protein and fat is not possible. If one controls the gram level of carbohydrates and consumes proteins/fats at amounts to feel satiated, the ratios can vary widely. Since the physiological basis is the deficit of carbs to force the body to burn fats, the exact levels are not important unless you try to do the program without including fats. If you consume excess protein in relation to fats, you might convert up to 40% of that protein to carbs not allowing you to get into fat-burning and stalling your weight loss. When we have created sample menus, the ratio for Induction is generally 5-10% Carb, 35% Protein, 50-60% Fat. As you go from Induction through the phases to maintenance, you must determine your own carb threshold and then scale down the protein/fat percentages in relation to the increased carb level. This is all very individualized so no values can be provided.

Sincerely,

I'm confused.

If Carb = 5-10%, protein = 35% and fat = 50-60%... well then that's really low-cal, isn't it?

20 grams carb = 80 calories. Since Induction is 20 grams maximum, then 80 calories is 10% - meaning 800 calories per day?

Not that I'm opposed to lowering calories during LC, as a matter fact I think it's necessary and it's been proven to be so. But... 800? A day? That's extreme. For a 200-pound person (there are many here), that's 4 calories per pound of bodyweight. For heavier people (like me) even less. I get a few more than that on my infamous tuna-and-water fast.

Did I miss something here?

Carolyn: I stick very closely to those ratios posted by Lisa and my caloric intake ranges from 1000 to 1300 calories per day. It hasn't slowed my loss (12 pounds in 3 weeks). Don't worry about the low caloric value of the carbs. The fats (mayo, heavy whipping cream, cooking oil, etc.) add "extreme" calories that increase your daily calorie intake. Using FitDay is the only way that I can ensure I'm falling within those ratios, at least for now!

I usually eat 5% carbs, 30% protein, 65% fat. At 20 carbs/day, this would equal:

20 g carbs x 4 = 80 calories = 5%
120 g protein x 4 = 480 calories = 30%
115.5 g fat x 9 = 1040 calories = 65%

Total = 1600 calories

You could do 5% carbs, 35% protein and 60% fat at the same calorie level:

20 g carbs x 4 = 80 calories = 5%
140 g protein x 4 = 560 calories = 35%
106.6 g fat x 9 = 960 calories = 60%

Total = 1600 calories

Also, she may be including all carbs, not just net carbs, so that would increase the calorie count.

Just plug your menus into FitDay.com and you'll easily see what your percentages are, without starving yourself on 800 calories!

Hey Getten There,

If you would like an awesome site for menu options, go to google and type in Linda's low carb menu's and recipes. This lady keeps a daily log of all her low carb meals for like the past two years. They are great recipes! She even has a special induction menu sections. Hope this helps!
