Dairy Free Challenge-April 1

A few of us in the main lobby are interested in trying a dairy free challenge so I thought we could use a place in here.

For anyone that jumps in late, I, personally, will still be eating eggs, whey protein powder, and butter. So if I post about eating those, don't ask me why I'm eating them.

I'm in!! I've been dairy free for nearly 3 weeks now and dropped 5 pounds very quickly! I do still consume butter as I consider that more of a fat than a dairy, and of course eggs....I don't think those are considered dairy.

I've found some great DF substitutes for HWC, cream cheese and shredded cheese. I would love to know what other substitutes people have tried.

I have found that Coconut cream is a great replacement for HWC, and both trader Joes and Tofutti make great cream cheese replacements. I'm trying to work up the nerve to make cream cheese muffins with the Tofutti.....I'll let you know how they turn out!!

Who else is joining us?

I'm soooooo glad you took care of my HWC issue. I'm going to get some cocounut cream today to try. Do you just use the kind in the can? I'm asking because the ones I've bought before in the cans are usually separated with a liquid on bottom and fat on top?

We don't have a Trader Joes, or Whole Foods, or Costco, but I have seen a lot of dairy subs at my new grocery store, and that's what made me thing, hmmm I think I can do this. So I do need to go see what they have. I think for today, I'm just going to make some chicken in the crockpot with a can of Las Palmas Green Chile enchilada sauce. That's what I ate on last week except I added a whole tub of Mexican Crema

I have actually made pudding with soft tofu before, and it turned out great, so go ahead and make those muffins!

Hi Michelle, yes I use the Coconut cream in a can....I just shake it up really good before I open it. Once I open it I pour it all in a Tupperware dish and store it in the fridge and it doesn't separate on me......in fact once it's in the fridge it gets thicker. I've used it as a 1:1 ratio in everything I used HWC and so far it's been a great substitute!! I will definitely try the cream cheese muffins, I really miss those.....if they turn out well I will be in heaven!

One more thing....if you have a hard time finding the coconut cream, check the Asian food aisle. If you have an Asian grocery store around you can probably find it there super cheap!!

Hi I gave up dairy for health reasons. I didn't think I'd ever give it up, but I have and HWC was the hardest part for me too. Go figure - I'd always thought it would be delicious cheese. I'm not one for "substitutions" per se, but I will try some interesting things here or there (avocado chocolate pudding is delicious!). So, I wanted to point out there are some paleo recipes for coffee creamer that you could try. I make my own nut milk (using walnuts and almonds), so I can make that as concentrated or weak as I like - I found that mixed with coconut oil and slapped in a magic bullet for 20 seconds or more does the trick.

There is also cashew cream, which is made by soaking cashews in water for 8 hours or so, and then draining, rinsing, and blending with a small amount of water. I have not made creamer from this, but I think it *could* work if mixed with another ingredient or two (maybe vanilla and a bit of coconut oil or cream). I have made ice cream from it - which worked out well. I've also made a *cheese* sauce from it for veggies, which I thought was delicious. I'd love to make cashew or macadamia nut "cheese" for a recipe one day, but it won't be a staple in the househould. Again, i do not like getting caught up in substitutes.

So, there are options. Sometimes it helps to browse the paleo blogs for recipes or the vegan blogs.

DD, I've never had chocolate Avocado pudding.....it's seriously good??? The nut cheeses and creams sound GREAT....you may have to share some of your recipes with us!

How's everyone doing this morning? BTW, I did discover a FABULOUS dairy free mozzarella "Cheese" It's called "Go Veggie!" It melts and pulls JUST LIKE real cheese!! I've used it in a couple of dishes now and I have to say, I was VERY impressed....even DH thought it looked amazing. If you see it at the store, it's WELL WORTH buying!!

I'm here. Not having a great day personally, on plan though, haven't eaten anything yet, but it will be dairy free.

I got some coconut milk but haven't tried that either.

I kind of don't care about food at this point. It's more of a hassle to buy and prepare and I rather just not eat.

I'm here too!

Michelle, I can totally relate! I have so many times where I really don't want to eat....I just don't want to be hungry.

I had to spend all morning in court, and I have to be back there again tomorrow afternoon.....I hate going to court, it screws up my whole day!!!

Things have been incredibly stressful at work lately, in the past that was my excuse to go off plan, but I'm not even tempted to do that these days.....so I consider that a major victory!

Still dairy free here, hoping it helps the ringing in my ears to subside....that hasn't happened yet, but it's only been 2 weeks so far.....I figure that's not long enough for a fair assessment......we'll see if there's any improvement in the next 2 weeks.

I hear ya Tammy. Right now I'm trying to gag down some dry chicken so I don't over eat later.

I hope things at work get better for you. I'm in the same boat. But I don't really want to eat off plan, I just tend to not eat all day then eat at night but eat everything. That's my biggest problem. I'm just not a day eater. But I'm trying, thus the dry chicken.

I am eating carrots dipped in guacamole right now. DH saw me packing them this morning and said, "But carrots go with ranch." He got the stink eye.

The HVR packets have dairy and I haven't found a homemade recipe that tastes good yet.

Michelle, if you can find some of the go veggie shredded cheeses, they're REALLY good. The melt well and stretch and pull like regular cheese....you could slap some of that on your chicken and toss it under the broiler or nuke it and it'd be much tastier!!

Gina, I love guac....that's a great substitute!! Definitely give him the stink eye!

Right now I'm not really using any subs. I haven't even tried the coconut milk in my coffee yet. Seems to be working. I'm at a low, 222.5.

Happy Monday all,

How's everyone doing? Still dairy free here....though I was SOOOOOO tempted this weekend to have some cheese. I need to remember that bourbon makes me crave things that used to be ok....like cheese. It also inhibits my weight loss, but boy it sure tasted good in my soda last night!! Outside of the bourbon, I find that it's really much easier to give up dairy than I anticipated. I am still having butter, but that's it. It's been 3 weeks now, I still have the ringing in my ears....don't know if it will alleviate that, but I sure am hoping!!

How's everyone else doing?

Ugh, I had some dairy last night. I made cream cheese stuffed peppers and I had 3. My stomach told me about it this morning. That's my solid confirmation I'm at least lactose intolerant at a minimum.

I have, however, noticed my ears itching less, unless I get extremely stressed, so I think I may also be allergic.

Hi, I.ve been dairy free for two weeks now into my 3rd week and have lost 2.2kgs. Here is a woman who only loses ounces and grams usually. So finally I think that I have found a plan that suits me. I have been doing the whole 30 and am loving it. I did start a thread but no one has contributed yet So I.ll park here for now.

Get rid of the dairy and all the hidden sugars and honestly the weight will drop. The whole 30 is amazing...I.ve put the link in my Whole 30 thread.

Michelle, that's crazy about the cream cheese affecting you like that....yep, you clearly are intolerant!!! I hadn't thought about how it was affecting my stomach, but now that you mention it, in the past few weeks my stomach has been calmer....and I'm much more *ehem* regular!

Whole 30 - eating totally clean for one month. Probably similar to this thread Dairy Free

Only eating whole foods which have had nothing added to them that might contain added artificial sweetener/ sugar.

So you can eat nearly all fresh food, including some fruit and even limited amounts of nuts and seeds (very similar to Paleo I think but you do for 30 days and then review). You are supposed not to weigh for 30 days but like that was gonna happen NOT...with my scale OCD lol.

No dairy

No grains or legumes


No alcohol...(boo hoo)


but you can eat lots of other things and I haven't been hungry at all. I also had a little treat of 1 beer and 1 cappuccino coffee at the weekend and still lost. AND honestly I have been stalled for months/years...going up a lb and down a lb...so far this seems to be the plan for me. Luckily I.ve only got a little to lose to get back to target but wandered after Xmas followed by a beach holiday immediately after. so half a stone went on and hasn't come off!!

That's interesting.....since giving up dairy I've learned never to say NEVER....because I thought I'd never give up dairy. I would say for the most part my WOE fits into line with what you're doing EXCEPT that I do have splenda or splenda sweetened syrups in my coffee, and in my Mio water drops.....I do not like unsweetened coffee of unflavored water.....it would be very difficult for me to give those 2 things up.....

To have to drink black coffee OMG...but after a couple of days I got used to it and by week 2 because I had lost 1kg I was like OMG..this is working. Cannot comment on the Splenda as I don't have sweetener or sugar in my drinks. I drink loads of water anyway so that's not a problem. I drink fizzy water at night with a slice of lemon or lime in it.

See how you go cos as I said I.ve had two little cheats both weekends and it hasn't affected me so you may be OK just cutting the dairy and grains out. As I have always said there is a plan for everyone - its just finding the right plan for you.

Do you have very much to lose?

Giving up dairy has been much easier than I expected, I really am ok with that. I still use butter, because I consider that more of a fat than a dairy product......so I put butter, coconut oil and coconut cream in my coffee. I have found the coconut cream is a WONDERFUL dairy free HWC replacement.

As for weight.....oh yes.....I want to lose another 70- 80 pounds!! I've lost nearly 30 already.

WOW 30lbs is amazing...You will lose cutting out the dairy I am sure. Honestly, I've tried everything thing to try and shift this gained half a stone and nothing would shift it and NOW this has reduced me by 2kgs in 2 weeks. I know it.ll slow down but even if that's all I lose in the 30 days I will be happy.

I bought some coconut milk in a tin but not used that yet. Will have to look for the coconut cream.

Oooh found some on the net (of course) at local supermarket. That looks dangerous to me I would probably want to eat the whole tin lol
