I was putting in an online grocery order for them this morning and I got a request from him for strawberry flavoured Gaviscon. You never think itíll happen to you one day though, do you?

No, I eat LC, fermented foods and I drink about a tenth of what my dad does, LOL! Although my siblings also have acid reflux problems, when I asked them about it, it is usually sugar or alcohol related, so that kind of verifies to me that I'm on the right track!

Slow it does seem a minefield of information, good luck on finding your way through to what works for u. Hugs

I get gaviscon advance on prescription and I too sound like my dad did, aah the joys of getting older. Still convinced mines made worse by HRT, which I assume is a problem my dad didn't have lol

This is probably hormonal but I may well have to kill my husband within the next hour so if u don't see any posts for a while u will know I have been locked up!!

Not your gorgeous husband shy? I've seen the wedding photos remember.

I had very sad news today. A very special woman who I have loved deeply as a second mother died peacefully yesterday aged 84. Only this last week in Devon I had been gathering photos of us in younger days to take to show her and talk about in the home she had had to go into, due to Parkinsons.

But she was in no pain and did not appear distressed. I had a long howl and talk with her lovely daughter and I am feeling better now.

It is interesting how important I find you, my 'virtual' friends, at a time like this. A sign of the times.

Kissa. My father has Parkinson’s too. I came across some photos today from 6 or 7 years ago and he was out in the garden cutting up fallen trees and hauling logs around. He struggles to get out of a chair now, and needs a walker to cross the room. So sad to see.

Thanks, Mimosa. My parents had a ceiling replaced last week and the dust seems to have set of bronchitis in my father. He’s getting over it, but it just made me realise how fragile he is now. A friend of about my parents’ age who had Parkinson’s died of pneumonia just before Christmas. It’s all a bit scary.

Oh Ailuros I so sorry to read this. I hope that he responds well to the various drugs that are out there.

My friend deteriorated very quickly over two and half years. She broke a hip last September, after which she was unable to go home and soon could not feed herself or ultimates swallow. It is a cruel illness. My sympathies.

I’m glad we’re going up to see them at the weekend. I don’t have any reason to think he’s in immediate danger, but you just never know, do you?

Oh Kissa, I'm so sorry!! Huge virtual hugs coming your way.

Ditto Ailuros, and I hope your father continues to get better, and soon (more Rennies needed, maybe? ;-) ).

Slow, good luck, as everyone else says, with negotiating your way through that particular minefield!

Amin, ohhhh you made me *long* for Italy - and how wonderful to feel free around food!!

Mimosa, DM is one of my guilty pleasures too. I balance it with the Grauniad. Doesn't seem to be a decent middle path, and I shout at BOTH lots of commentators (I HATE the ad hominem attacks on either side. Horrid.)

Shy, now this is a problem - we CAN'T send you a file in a (*gasp*) CAKE!!! ;-)

Thanks for the sympathies on my casting rant! Was just having a moan. I don't mind theatres knowing what they want, I *do* mind them ignoring the possibilities of acting, make-up and padding - we are, after all, ON THE STAGE!!! And that after decades of trying to look as young, slim and beautiful as possible. Hmph. Actually I'm not sure the entire profession isn't sliding down the loo - bit depressing.

However the sun is shining, I have at least made a start on an outfit to wear to a premiere on Saturday, and I am planning a quick trip to Berlin for a friend's 40th next weekend... Can't really complain!!

Hi all!

Just popping in quickly, hopefully I'll be back a bit later for some proper chatting!
It's going to be a glorious day, and I'm in the office, grrrrrr! At least I'll take my lunch break somewhere outside: was thinking of having a nice carpaccio...

Sending hugs to everyone. It seems a few of us need it here. I am thinking of you and hope today is a good day for you.

xxxx Chloe.

I got to the gym again today, really enjoying my workouts at the moment, of course, with my sister visiting next week and Vicky arriving I doubt I'll get there much over the next month. Alway seem to be playing catch up on gym and food.

Mustn't complain, I love my life.

Kissa - so funny how these things come and go. It's all about finding the way that makes you feel good right? Coz like you say, any diet can work if you follow it. Trick is finding your balance; This is totally my goal now. So far so good. =)
Sending hugs your way, sorry to hear about your friend.

Mimosa - yay for the occasional support article. And the banana diet comment really cracked me up!

Slow - the papers are Juuuuust getting there on combining 5:2 and LCHF. Which admittedly first really really made me laugh as it sounded like they just couldn't male up their minds so let's do both! But after combining 16:8 and LCHF myself, I'm not laughing anymore, I'm a big supporter!
More big hugs your way, hang in there and I hope the next someone has some good suggestions.

And hugs to Ailuros too! Sorry to hear about your dad.

Wow, this was like the major hugging post! Anyone else feel like they need some, I always have hugs to spare.

Two more stories from me, hopefully to make you all chuckle a bit!

Last night I went out with friends for one of the girl's hen night, and we went to a place that is well-known for its mojitos. Now, I don't drink all that often and even less now since this new WOE (two sips of wine and I'm good) but I didn't want to be a party-pooper and I'd run home beforehand and had a strong coffee, some cottage cheese with a few almonds and some cinnamon so I thought, why the heck not?

Well, this drink was like a meal in itself! I nursed it for like 2 hours!! And it was yummy; had some kind of like mango cream on top and even came with a little pot of Maltesers but I skillfully gave those away to the others.
I was suitably tipsy from this but basically fine. Didn't end up eating anymore food, then went home, drank 2 big glasses of water and Boom! The alcohol from the drink like RE-activated itself. Suddenly I felt ill and when I got into bed the room was almost spinning.

The hubby was having a field day, claiming that I was drunk as a skunk (ONE mojito peeps, ONE!) and just laughing and patting my hip even more when I moaned at him not to touch me and asking if he could get the room to stop spinning coz I wanted to get off.

Cue falling asleep for almost 7 hours, jumping up for my power walk and well, living on a lot of caffeine today.
I won't be going near mojitos any time soon.

Aaaaand my other story: last night I also had one of the girls, who is a medical student and who I didn't know beforehand, basically yell at me when I told her that I don't eat gluten. She freaked out and started telling me that I am harming my brain because I'm not getting enough gluclose.

Okay so she's Italian and I know they take their pasta seriously but really? I've never even heard of that being a risk before!
Anyone else heard of something like this? I feel like glucose is something we'd be getting through other sources anywhays and nowhere have I read that Low Carbing would cause a deficiency in glucose. Sounds a little off but maybe I'm totally missing something?

Not going back to eating gluten either way but thought I'd throw it out there to my knowledgable ladies.

Itís true that part of the brain and some other organs need a certain amount of glucose (most of the brain runs happily on ketones), but thatís a total of about 60g carb per day. If you donít eat any carbs, then your body will make some glucose by breaking down protein ó ideally from your food, but if you donít eat enough protein, then it will come from breaking down your muscles. Whether the glucose comes from dietary carbs or from breaking down protein, it certainly doesnít have to involve gluten.

And thanks for the stories .

Thanks Ailuros, that makes so much more sense than this girl's rant and rave at me last night. Granted, she'd also had a mojito at that point in time ...

We’re heading off in the morning to stay with my parents till Monday.

This should be a pretty good test of my 6:1 regimen — normally we eat out once every week or two. This week, between the kitchen being out of action and the parental visit, it will be three times, and possibly some more next week.

The one group of people you can be certain know insufficient about diet are the medical profession!

I just say I eat sensibly when or if asked by a Dr how I lose weight. It is true for me...

And if you ever have the opportunity to meet her again please feel free to inform her that my brother in law, retired GP, is totally gluten free and now very healthy.

Ailuros, sounds almost like having the kitchen out of use is a good thing. We eat out a lot, as you know, but that has never really impacted on my weight unless I make silly choices.

Well, the kitchen is out of action because they’re finally installing the new boiler, so that part is good .
