I'm glad everyone had a great time yesterday. It was quiet for me, which was fine!

Tony, just a word to you....I was the youngest of 4 kids and when I was the last one at home with just my parents it was difficult.....the empty nest syndrome doesn't just apply to the parents. I'm not saying your 17 year old will experience what I did, I just wanted to give you a "heads up"

Off work again today....not sure what I'm going to do....there is always something that needs to be done. For sure I need to run to the store for cat food - seems I'm always running out of that. It's hot and muggy (to us Phoenicians) as the monsoon season has kicked in.

Marilee, we are trying to catch up with your Phoenix temps. It's 95.6 right now. phew!I bet Tony and family are in the pool right now!

FF, hope you are sitting right under your ac!

I am always running out of cat food too!

Kids are 1 hour from Maryland now. They have been on the road 8 hours . They hope to meet up with son in law at his mother's house in less than an hour. I will be glad when they are through driving for the day!

Cooked up a rib eye for lunch and may finish it up for dinner.

marilee, is dd a "down day"?...not sure...i agree, a quiet day can be a very nice day...hey, thanks for sharing your experience on the empty nest...i am trying to be very sensitive to that phenomenon with my youngest, so if you have any advice, please share...the kids are all very close to each other and us, at least so far...yesterday, the four who don't live in nashville were all here at one time or another and today, my two oldest boys have been here since around noon, hanging out with my youngest son and me...his best friends are his two older brothers, and i hope they will always make time for him, even as they move on in their lives...

my youngest son works for me, and when we are not working and his brothers are not around, i make sure he and i do fun things - we either play golf, go to a movie, do some fishing, hit the gym, etc...he has a girlfriend - they are both 17 - and i try to keep him busy so he doesn't have time to be with her constantly during the summer...one grandchild is enough for this year!...

please let me know if you have thoughts on what other things i should be sensitive to during this time of transition in our family...thanks!

abs, you were right - we were all in the pool at 2:19 this afternoon, except for dw who was at the gym...

leftovers tonight...some pulled pork and sauteed ribeye with onions, peppers and garlic...

may head to maine in the morning...see y'all soon!

Tony, sounds like you are doing great with your son! Things were going on in my family at that time which I wasn't privy to and things at home were tense and I didn't know why. In my later years, I told my mom and dad that if there was such a things a re-incarnation and they came back and were parents again, to please tell their kids what's going on. Kids tend to think things are their fault.
So, being the only other kid in the home, there was no one to bounce things off of or just to talk with.

Keep up the good work!

Didn't mean to drop a load on everyone

thanks, marilee, you aren't dumping anything on us - i appreciate the feedback!...i agree that it is important to be open and honest with kids...we try to do that - i hope we are succeeding...they know what is going on and where we (and they) stand at all times...it is sometimes a challenge when you have younger kids and they idolize their older siblings and you want that - in our case the older siblings set an awesome example 99.9% of the time - but when the older kids make a decision you don't agree with, it has to be handled openly but sensitively...older kids are entitled to make their own decisions and even their own mistakes if it turns out that way, but that doesn't mean you want the next kid making the same decision...as a parent, it becomes easier to get more laid-back with the younger kids, but that isn't fair either...we are trying very hard to make sure the youngest grows up in as similar an environment as possible to the one the older kids did, although we know that making it the same is not possible...i'll keep you posted and please keep sharing your thoughts!

not sure what is going on yet today...hard to hit the gym when it is soooo hot outside - been choosing the pool instead this week except for one day...we may head to maine with at least two of the boys...

hope everyone has a great day...

abs, hope you're not too sad with the kids being gone...i know how that feels :-(

Hey Tony, if I had time to be sad about the kids leaving I would be but it always switches to being worried about them on the road. lol When I get the news they are home safe and sound tonight I can be a little sad again. It was really great to have them around and everyone was so happy to see them after 2 years! My niece's husband, the ones that had the bbq on the fourth e-mailed our son in law to say how nice the kids are. That made me very happy.

Marilee, DD does mean down day as Tony quessed. The JUDDD group usually does a downday of 300 or so calories (there is a formula based on your weight I think} and then an up day of eating your amount of calories that your body needs for the day. I think it is Dr. Johnson's Up Day Down Day diet. Some people eat all low carb on it but alot of people go by calories only and eat whatever they want. It seems to be fairly successful as a way of eating. It is the 300 calorie days every other day that keep me from doing it. I am reading a thread right now where some people are only drinking coffee with cream on their down days. They say that if they don't open the door to eating those days they go much easier than trying to keep their food calories so low.

The 5:2 diet that I have been attempting is similar but the down days are only twice a week and the calories on the down day for women are 500 and for men 600.

I will check back later. Have a great Saturday everyone!

This is an interesting thread of a JUDDD group that lost a total of 126.9 pounds in the month of June. One person who only weighed 124 pounds said "you lost me in them month of June" lol

JUDDD Pounds evicted in June!

Abi - I can completely sympathize with your daughter. My children are very active in sports and 4H clubs, so there is always somewhere to go or someone to drop off!

Tony - I love hearing about your family. And having to cook every night for 8 sounds like a great "problem". It is something I wish for when my children begin to leave the house. Oh, and the 17 yo with the girlfriend...I try to keep mine busy as well.

Marilee - I can sympathize with the mugginess. It has been unusually humid here in Ohio. DD = down day or dear/darling daughter depending on the context. Sorry for the acronyms. I will try to do better

FF - I hope you are staying cool.

Well Thursday didn't go quite as planned due to Mother Nature, but we had a great time nonetheless. Rain caused the fireworks to be cancelled, so we opted for a movie marathon. We had popcorn and peanut m&m's and watched Rise of the Guardians and Oz the great and powerful. For my range of ages, these two movies were perfect! Yesterday was the town festival and run the night 5K. My 15 yo DS and myself participated in the 5k. My son took 3rd overall out of 340+ runners. I respectably ran the entire 5K except for the last .2 miles, my 3 yo DS decided to join me to run to the finish line and I had to stop to walk 1 or 2 times for him . I love that they are becoming more active with me!

Other News: I have hit a new low weight! 161.8 - is the lowest since before my 7 yo DD was born!! Over 8 years! I'm very excited. I was doing LC since September, but seemed to have stalled from March until now. I started doing LC JUDDD about 4 weeks ago and it seems to be working for me. I truly hope to see the 150s by the end of July and get back into a routine of running at least 3 days a week. I know you guys are not setting weight loss goals for this challenge, but I hope you do not mind if I do.

Happy Saturday everyone! We are planning on going up to the festival and eating lots of stuff and participating in all the fun activities. Then fireworks at 10PM. Hopefully these will not be cancelled.

Lori, I enjoyed reading your post. That is terrific about your son coming in 3rd and you going the whole distance. I am thrilled with your new low weight too! And for setting a weight goal, you go right ahead. We do whatever we want here. That's why I like it.No one says "now what is she going to try?" At least they don't say it to me out loud.

Lori, congratulations on the weight loss and new low weight! It is inspiring. BTW, you don't need to spell things out for me - I can learn all of the acronyms.

Tony, I think parenting has progressed a lot over the years. When I was 17, it was 1965 and things were very different.

ff - Vicki - where are you?

Thanks, Lori! We love you, too. Speaking for myself, I don't know how long you have been lurking, so if you want to know anything about me, just ask....my life is pretty much an open book.

I totally blew my diet this week - being off from work takes its toll - at least I let it. Boredom sets in and that is my worst enemy. I'll be glad to get back to work on Monday.

Marilee - I have found that transparency is what makes the best friends. If someone knows everything about you and still sticks around, you definitely have a great friend!

On the cheating note, I think that is one of the big reason I decided to change to JUDDD. I was doing well on LC for a long time, then when it stalled for such a long time, it just go too difficult to stay away from the foods I wanted that were THAT low carb, such as my favorites, potatoes and sun chips. So, doing JUDDD (even LC) I allow myself these two indulgences. It has worked wonderfully so far.

I have been up Marilee but just now got on to our site. Sorry

I did not sleep all that well, kept waking up but fortunately, did not toss and turn and went back to sleep again. Not good sleep though.

Lori, love your picture! Very pretty! You remind me of my daughter even more besides having to handle 4 kids by yourself.

I finally got a fast day in and did a FF kind of day with all liquids, coffee, diet soda, diet hot chocolate and a glass of wine.

Just had 1/4 cup full fat greek yogurt with some leftover fruit from the kids in it and a teas. of sugarfree vanilla pudding stirred in.

We meet our new pastor today and then breakfast at the Backside. Plan to have my usual of bacon and eggs. I bet the lady that waits on us missed us last Sunday while we were at the lake.

Spent time looking at some lc recipes yesterday. May try to make something later.

Will check back later to see how everyone is doing.

I'm going to try and go back to sleep.

hey guys, sorry i was mia, but we spent the night in maine...it was beautiful and about 15-degrees cooler than it was further inland...today, two of my sons and i worked on clearing the walking trail at our lake lot...it's been several years since we did it and there were tons of fallen trees etc. in the woods, so i used the chain saw to cut them out...and the boys trimmed and dragged the logs and brush out of the way...we got almost all of it done...

lori, i love hearing about your family too :-) i'm so happy you joined us - you fit right in!...it is amazing that your son finished 3rd in such a large field...and i am so happy for you hitting a new low...for me, it is important to set goals and weigh often to maintain accountability...you probably haven't been lurking long enough to know that after 9 years of suffering, last november i underwent successful hip replacement surgery and i have been rehabbing at the gym 3-4 days a week since january...after a couple of months of exercising, i was not only not losing weight, but i gained about 9 lbs!...i was becoming discouraged and toying with the idea of changing my regimen even though i was getting healthier, stronger etc...so rather than do that, i decided to take a hiatus from weighing for awhile...i have lost a lot of fat but gained a lot of muscle and i feel better than i have in 20 years...i will get back to weighing soon and setting concrete goals because that works for me...

i love this place and y'all too - who needs judgment???...the fact that we are here, and trying and helping and supporting and sharing says a lot about us...and none of what we are trying to do is easy...if we can't be understanding of each other, what the heck!...haha...

marilee, i didn't realize you were off this week - was it all week or just since the 4th?...

abs, hope the bacon and eggs were good this morning - i was thinkin about ya ;-)

ff, is the heat keeping you away from the computer?...are you staying by the a/c?...hope so!...will we see more of you as the temps drop?...

today:
b: handful of blueberries
l: lobster roll
d: leftover bbq

vicki, good luck with the studying...

Kids made it home to Missouri about 8:30 last night so I can relax a little. Back to work this morning. Had a hard time getting up which is very strange for me. lol I have packed left over steak and an egg for snack and lunch. Will also bring a bag of pork skins.

FF, I feel so bad for you in the hot, humid apartment. I think the temps this week will be in 80's instead of the 90's so hope that will give you a little relief.

Vicki, hope your FIL will be able to go home soon. Wonderful he has had a nurse to look after him. Good luck on your re certification test as a nurse educator.

Marilee, hope you got caught up on your sleep last night so you feel refreshed to get back to work today.

Tony, nice that you got to go to the lake where the temps were cooler. But cutting up fallen trees and brush must have been super hot work. Then did you jump in the lake?

Lori, how was your Sunday? What kind of work does your husband do? I see they have gotten a tremendous amount of rain on the gulf coast. Wonder if they have had it in New Orleans too?

Have a great day Blitzers!

will be headed to the gym in a few minutes...i have a lot of running around to do today and a planning board meeting tonight to hopefully get final approval for our new sign...

Marilee & Abi – Thank you so much! You have me blushing! I do not handle compliments very well. I am working on it though.

Vicki – Good luck on your studying and your test.

Tony – Wow, that sounds like a busy day. We worked Saturday as well. I have trees and limbs all over the lawn from a storm that came through our area a couple of weeks ago. My two teenage boys were helping me clean it all up this weekend. We were out of town last weekend and didn’t get an opportunity to clean until these past few days. I was nice working outside when the sun was shining the last few days. It sounds like you lead a very active life and can afford to take some time off from daily weighing. I do not feel as though this would benefit me. But someday I will have to face that fear. I have regained the weight a few times and am fearful if I do not take that step onto the scale I will let it creep back on again. I am trying to ramp up my workouts too. I love to be active, but it is difficult when I have kiddos to chase.

Abi – So glad your kiddies made it home safely. I only have one that drives, but I worry about him whenever he is not safely at home. Your steak and egg sounds so yummy. My Sunday was wonderful, thank you for asking! We were finally able to make it to church, which was really nice. We have been out of town or out of pocket for the last several weekends. It has been so bad the pastor stopped by a couple of weeks ago to make sure everyone was ok…LOL. I told him it is just crazy this summer. I even went so far as to tell him yesterday not to worry for the next several weeks, because I probably won’t be back for about 5 weeks. Anyway, we went home and all ate lunch. I announce to the kids that we have been getting into a bad habit of eating at different times and in different rooms and we would be all eating together at the dining table again for a while. I really think that makes a bit difference in family dynamics. Then we were all just kinda lazy the rest of the day because of the rain.

I bet you are all wondering about the next 5 weeks. My 15 yo DS is going to stay at his cousin’s house in Chicago for a couple of weeks. I am taking him there this next weekend. Then we are camping the weekend after that. I am meeting my DH Cousins the next weekend to do a family river cruise in Michigan and pick up my 15 yo. And all the following week my 17 yo DS has his 4H project Lamb in the shows at the County Fair. So my life is pretty chaotic until about the 2nd week in August. Actually, if I think about it, the chaos will just continue with getting ready for school and getting everyone where they need to be for the new school year. Ah, the total craziness of it all keeps me young!

Sorry for my windiness.  Happy Monday!

hey lori, wow!...you are a busy young woman!...sounds like 5 weeks of fun ahead...

my five kids still keep me hopping even though they are mostly grown up...i was a bit of a wild child as a young man in hs and college, but as soon as my then girlfriend (now wife) got pregnant, i changed completely, focusing on the child i was bringing into the world...i dropped out of law school, took on three jobs and have never looked back - okay, i do look back! :-) i cannot believe what a good boy i've been for 29 years (yesterday was our 29th anniversary), as i am still kinda crazy when the kids aren't around...haha!...

i sold my lumber yard/hardware store a couple of years ago and bought a commercial building next door to it, and i collect rent instead of the 24/7 job i had for 27 years...so life is good...i'm also a nashville songwriter now and make regular trips there to write - i have a place there too so that is nice...so, you see, i am still pretty crazy!...

i need to weigh regularly to stay accountable too, cuz as you know, running around doesn't stop you from gaining weight...i will start again sometime soon...

had a great workout at the gym this morning and then a busy day at work...

ff, i feel terrible that you are so miserable...is the a/c working well?...it may need to be recharged - does your apt. complex maintain the unit?...there is no way you should have to suffer so much...
