May: 30 days without sugar! Join in!

Sugar is THE WORST! :annoyed: Bad for triglycerides, bad for gut health, bad for teeth, bad as a trigger food, and bad, bad, bad for weight loss, and (for me) very difficult to give up.

Let's make May a month with no sugar in sight! For 30 days I'm planning to not eat things like cookies, ice cream, flavored coffees, chocolate, candy, syrup, honey, honey-roasted nuts, etc.

Anyone want to join me?:hiya: Let's encourage each other and talk about all the birthday parties, graduations, office events, etc where we gracefully turned down the cake. What are the sugar devils that are hardest for you to shake while on LC?

Low Carb Librarian 04-29-2013 09:40 AM

I am in...
I have to go LC again ... and nothing but going cold turkey works for me.

I could really need some help.

Low Carb Librarian 04-29-2013 09:43 AM

Oh, and cake... Cake is very hard to pass up. Especially since I have been practicing my cake baking skills.

Low Carb Librarian 04-29-2013 03:35 PM

No one else wants to join us?
:(
Surprised... This is a low carb site after all!

grubchow 04-29-2013 08:25 PM

Hello, Low Carb Librarian! It's not May quite yet, so maybe more folks will join us! I'm definitely looking forward to this challenge!

Low Carb Librarian 04-29-2013 10:20 PM

Me too! I really need to let go of the sugar!

Lindy in Louisiana 04-29-2013 10:37 PM

Hey ladies, I'm in. I do need the accountability for my eating. Sugar is no problem because I have gotten it out of the house. But I'm really trying to stay away from frankenfoods. Every time I try something new with carbquick I add a pound. Ha. :hyst: Not a pretty sight.

grubchow 04-30-2013 05:54 AM

Great, Lindy in Louisiana! Welcome! I know what you mean about the frankenfoods! I quit using artificial sweeteners in June 2012 (except small amount of stevia about once a month) and while I know that has helped me lose some weight, sometimes I still really crave diet coke!

How strict are you talking? I don't add sugar to anything but my Atkins shake I drink every day has 1 g sugar and I often drink a diet ice tea/lemondae mix that has 2 g sugar per packet. Plus I occassionally use half and half in cooking which has some sugar and I may eat a grape or a blueberry here and there....so I'm not sure I qualify for "no sugar". :dunno:

Deosil 04-30-2013 12:00 PM

I have stayed away from sugar now since January but I also need to start to wean myself off Splenda and SF Torani syrups too. I will definitely join this challenge with the added bonus of trying to limited (and eventually completely cut out) all the artificial sweeteners as well.

emgee 04-30-2013 12:34 PM

Totally in. I have been sugar free 4 days so far because I decided enough is enough. I do believe sugar is highly damaging in so many ways. Would love to go binge free/cookie free/sugar free all of May with you all! I'm super sensitive, can't do shakes, gum etc etc. I have been sensitive for a long time but menopause came along and the sugar cravings went into high gear. I'm doing meat, fish, eggs, natural peanut butter (doesn't trigger cravings and I don't go overboard).
Funniest comment came from my husband after grocery shopping. He said "Who are you?"

grubchow 04-30-2013 01:20 PM

Deosil, emgee, Mistizoom!! :hiya: Hello and welcome! What if in this challenge we conceive of things broadly and say “sugar” AND “whatever other sweet things are triggers”… maybe that would encompass a wider and more challenging window, and would be slightly different for each person. Or maybe we could have a gram amount per day?

For example, for me…..bananas. Right now I eat about one per week, but I could easily sit down and eat 4 bananas with almond butter. So, those are a sugar for my body that I’d like to not eat for a while and see what happens. Cashews, dried apricots and ketchup also fall into this category for me. But I will still definitely be having HWC in my coffee...

Thoughts?

Ok I am in.. but I can't promise not to have a piece of Dark Dark Chocolate when I am going crazy!

I didn't start this challenge, so I can't tell you the rules ( if there are any ) :)
But I will tell you, that for me, I have to cut all sugar that I possibly can. If I have a taste I want more and more. And it isn't like a " hmm... I would really like some more..." It is more like I have my hand in the box and in my mouth before I even know I am doing it!

That is all of us, I believe. :hyst::hyst:

Alright everyone! Tomorrow, let's get started! DAY 1!! A protein-intensive breakfast will start my day off right.

Lindy in Louisiana 05-01-2013 08:11 AM

Ok day 1 plan to go mainly with meat and eggs today. Safe and being in ketosis my appetite is down. Yea!!

emgee 05-01-2013 10:02 AM

Still going strong...
No cravings for the "S" word today. Still doing mainly meat & eggs too.
I have 99% chocolate in the house but don't go out of my way for it. I don't worry about it since all I ever eat are 3 small squares. No interest though right now.

Not baking. I live with a hubby who snacks on Lucky Charms. Eesh. Maybe I'll just lead by example and not nag. :-)

Hey all!
Day 2 for me... I just couldn't wait!

Yesterday was hard because I am making cakes for a party that is taking place tomorrow. I have to work on them tonight too.

It is so hard not to lick the batter or taste a crumb of cake! They smell sooo good!

I will have to serve them up tomorrow night... :(
It is one of my favorite flavors too.

To top it off, I have to go to a birthday party on Saturday... Cake all over the place!!!!

I will stay strong... I might stop in to see if someone can talk me down!
:hyst:

HA! This is why I refer to all the super-helpful LC websites as "my AA" to my husband. When he sees me reading a LC website, he's like, "I'll just use the computer when your done with your AA reading." Good luck on Saturday. My kids kept me up most of the night with stomach flu, so I'm a little out of it today!

Mobird 05-02-2013 02:57 AM

Hi! Hope you all don't mind if I join a day late. This was my plan for May anyway and then I saw this challenge. Sugar is a major problem for me, always has been, and I cut it out almost entirely last year but it's been creeping back in lately and making me feel rotten and of course stalling my weight loss. I need this daily reminder. I'm going to have to white knuckle it for a few days (again) starting today.

emgee 05-02-2013 05:01 AM

Sweet Poison

Boycotting the sweet poison again today!
Down a couple of pounds this week. Body fat down a bit. I have 35lbs to lose. On a freaking mission!!!!
Mostly I feel better though :jumpjoy: More clear headed, more positive.
No cravings to report. Not counting anything really. Meat, eggs, some cream cheese and 99% dark chocolate yesterday.
I'm noticing that I'm not snacking and that I'm not eating after dinner.
I was eating non stop from waking to sleeping pretty much. One carby thing after another. I remember one day it was just carbs (as in bread and cookies) and I felt awful.

Have a poison free day all!!

grubchow 05-02-2013 06:45 AM

Hello and welcome, Mobird! I hear ya--I can go long stretches with nary a sight of sugar, then it begins to creep back in. Good luck today, all!

emgee 05-02-2013 11:46 AM

I'm as weak as they come with sugar in all it's forms. Binge eater Queen of the Universe. The only thing that gives me a fighting chance is to make sure I don't freak out over the fat and just add fat and subtract some protein. This has put a halt to a 2 year bender where I gained oh...40 lbs. Ketogenic closer to Phinney than Atkins I suppose.
So I guess what I am saying is *maybe* the trick is not to focus on the not eating sugar part (although obviously don't eat sugar) but to focus on higher fat. It's the fat that is making me not want the sugar. Hope I made some sense. ?

slimlizzie 05-02-2013 12:41 PM

Well I did great all day yesterday...BUT right before bed it was calling me!! a mini mounds bar and yes I ate it!!:dunno:

I am trying again today..

Mobird 05-02-2013 03:30 PM

I'm done eating for today and made it through the day without sugar. I know from experience that it's only rough for a few days.

Lindy in Louisiana 05-02-2013 03:55 PM

I never have a problem with sugar because I have plenty of substitutions for it. Diet cokes, etc. sf candies. Not perfect but it works. Also I hardly ever get out (retired, yea!!) but I did today. And the first thing I saw was the old neighborhood of Wendy's , McDonalds, Burger King. etc. My old friends have really missed me and loved me because I gave them so much attention. :hyst::hyst: Had to really justify to myself why I shouldn't just stop for a minute. But I made it. :jumpjoy::jumpjoy:
