Boot Camp Charlie for Men - February 2013

Welcome to Boot Camp Charlie. This is the place for men to lose fat, build muscle, and improve their overall fitness. All men are welcome to join, but be prepared to exercise, eat right, and take some heat for slacking off. There is lots of experience and encouragement shared here, so if your ready to get healthy, and not afraid to work for it, this is the place for you.



There are a few rules to follow.

Weigh in every Monday. Report your previous weeks weight and your current weeks weight.

On the 1st of each month report what you can:

All time high
Weight as of 12/1/2011
Current weight
Total pounds from high
Total pounds lost in 2011

No Emoticons. Nothing will get you latrine duty faster than a smiley.

There are many eating and exercising plans being followed here, share what works, what doesn't, but check in often. Straying from the camp for a period usually means somethings gone wrong. While tempting, don't go AWOL just because you screwed up. We don't like to send out the MPs, but will when necessary.

Superbowl edition. Any predictions. I don't really follow either team, but the 49ers quarterback has been entertaining to watch through the playoffs.

Thanks for the thread Ooba!

Good month for me. I lost all the weight I added in October, November and December. I'm sure most of it was water weight, but it's better to be gone.

Goals for February: lose 6 pounds, exercise 5 days a week, stick to WOE, try to post daily, keep alcohol to a minimum, and no caffeine or aspartame.

Super Bowl prediction: Ravens 27 SF 23
Super Bowl snacks: Grilled bacon wrapped stuffed jalapenos, grilled spicy chicken wings, mixed nuts, cured meats and cheese plate (with crackers for the regular folk), and chips (for others) with guac, homemade salsa and queso. I will have a 6 miller lite limit. What have you guys got planned?

271 this morning. My goal is to be below 250 before it gets really hot out.

I'm thinking SF wins the Super Bowl (BigD, can you advise us if we can even say "Super Bowl" without NFL consent? I'd hate for litigation to be brought against BCC). Hope it's a close game, and would love to see a few lead changes during the game. Not really sure what the eats will be for game day. I got a slow cooker for Christmas, so I may try do something with that. Going to follow BigD's lead and keep the beers to 6, but we'll see. I'm not married to that number.

Hey Guys,

Glad to see the thread is still going. Hope you all are doing well.

I’m starting a weightloss phase today (using a ketogenic diet), and figured I’d check in to BCC to help get on track.

A quick summary of where I’m at:

I did the NJ Tri-State Super Spartan obstacle race on September 8th. A typical “Super” Spartan race is supposed to be 8-9 miles and 20+ obstacles. The one I did was a bit tougher, as written up in the Spartan Race blog:
“This race was hardly normal even in the Spartan world. The theme seemed to be hills and water – the water coming by way of the course and the skies! In the week leading up to the race, there were several bear sightings by the build crew and as the race edged closer, the weather reports indicated that it would be a story weekend of races. Let’s talk about the course itself… 11 miles long and with over 3,000 feet of elevation gain over the grueling course it was not for the faint of heart. Touted as one of our most challenging Supers of all time, the course spanned three mountains, the fastest time of the weekend clocking in at 1:47.”
We also had 30 obstacles total. I finished in 6:04, which sounds terrible, but I had a 40 minute delay at one of the obstacles – a 24-foot artificial cliff dive in the waterpark area of the ski/water resort that hosted the race. A lot of people just did the burpee penalty and skipped the line, but I was really there for the obstacles, not race time, and I couldn’t pass up an awesome gut check like that one. I also had a 65-minute thunderstorm/tornado-warning delay where we were sequestered in a ski lift maintenance shed at the base of one section of the mountain. There was some confusion at that point (about the 7.5 mile mark of the race) between the race directors and the crew out on the course as to whether the race would be canceled, but we finally got word that we could finish if we wanted to and still get our medals at the end, or get bussed back from where we were. However, there would not be any support personnel out on the course.

There were a couple hundred of us in the shed and I think pretty much everyone started back up the mountain. I’d be damned if I was going home without that medal. I hooked up with a great group of people and we finished together. My time probably would have been more like 4:15/4:30 factoring out the delays, which would’ve been decent. As I mentioned, I was really in it for the obstacles and I totally dominated those. The only one I failed was a balance-test one where we had to hop across the tops of telephone pole sections sticking a few feet out of the ground for about 30 feet or so. I made it about halfway and lost it. I ended up racing at about 190 lbs. – not as light as I wanted to be, but I felt strong at that weight.

After recovering from the race, I tried to transition to minimalist shoes and a forefoot strike instead of being a heel-ball pounder, did too much too soon, and really screwed up my right calf.

I got back in to heavy lifting while rehabbing my calf and decided to bulk up a little and try to hit some decent lifts. I gave myself a weight ceiling of 210 lbs. The week between Christmas and New Years, I was hovering between 209-212 and hit a 640 Trap Bar Deadlift and a 335 Bench, planning to start a diet in January. I pushed it back to February because (1) everyone was getting sick and I seem most susceptible to illness when dieting, and (2) the 335 bench was pretty easy and I felt like I had a shot at 350. So, I just crushed food the last month, and hit a nice 350 Bench last Saturday at a weight of 221.

It’s been a fun few months and felt great to move some decent weights, but now it’s time to drop the excess flab (although I do think I’m leaner than I ever was before at 220 lbs.). My calf is feeling better (although I haven’t pushed the mileage much) and I have a bunch of obstacle races scheduled for June through September. I’d like to make a real effort to get down in the 180’s while I have a few months to lose weight and not worry so much about athletic performance.

BigD - looks like you are killing it so far with a -19 for January. Keep up the good work, buddy.

Ooba - sub-250 when warmer whether comes sounds like a good goal.

I'm rooting for the Ravens (due to fellow Rutgers alum Ray Rice), but I think the 49ers will go home with the Lombardi.

Stack- That race sounded like an awesome experience. Seems fitting too that mother nature threw in a curve-ball. Nice job on hitting 350 on the bench. Definitely impressive at 220 lbs. I've only gotten into 300lb bench territory once when I got pretty serious about lifting. Saddly, I weighed around 350 at the time.

Stack - good to hear from you. Your race seems like a great experience, even with all the extra obstacles. Though maybe those made it that much more rewarding for you.

Not much movement, but I havent been exercising or eating low carb. Working a lot has kept the weight in check, would rather be under 170, but its not too bad.

Stayed on plan over the weekend. Ended up getting into a project on Sunday and barely got done before the game started. Was glad San Fran made it interesting in the 2nd half, since it was starting to look really one sided early on.

I didn't manage to fully get into low carb mode over the weekend, but still managed to control my intake enough to drop a few pounds of bloat. Started serious carb restriction today.

Hiya fellas.

An all guy thread at LCF. It is like the landing at Inchon.

My high weight was 265. My low weight was 186. My stupidity was quitting smoking while still needing to lose 10 or 15 pounds. The Weight Loss God smote me mightily and I gave up my idiot pursuit of healthy lungs.

Gained two pounds, but I'm feeling a whole lot better. My fasting blood sugar dropped from 120 to 100 in a month, which makes my wife very happy.

This month, I'm going high carb/low fat on my workout days and high fat/low carb on my off days. We had our family cheat day on Saturday, and it made the whole family sick and bloated, so our cheat for next month will be a clean meal and perhaps a dessert.

Thanks for the support regarding my health. I'm definitely feeling a lot better by cleaning up my eats, so I'm gonna count on it being some type of food allergy.

Stack, it's great to see you back. I'd be in the hospital after a challenge like that. I'm sure that I would have slipped and fallen on one of telephone poles, Looney Tunes style.

BigD, that was a pretty good SB prediction. I wasn't rooting for either side, but I always feel sorry for the loser.

Perfect weather in New Orleans last week - we actually hit 78 degrees with no humidity. I don't think we had a winter at all.

Welcome Reddarin to BCC. We've got eerily similar stats, with a high of 265 and VFZ of 186. I'm about 10 pounds over you, now, but working to get back under 200 soon.

Bulk- glad to hear you're feeling better. Just curious - did you avoid the French Quarter last week or take part in some of the festivities?

Were you huge belly fat and a little fat all over or just fat? My belly was friggin huge and it is the last bastion of fat for me.

Are you guys working out at home or going to a gym? Following any particular plan or just rolling your own?

I have taken great pleasure in refusing to lift anything heavier than a 2 liter soda pop bottle to lose weight but ... I took some after/on_going pics several weeks ago (when I was at my VFZ) and my stick thin arms cried out for help. Which is kinda funny cause I always thought of them as meaty but that meatiness was all fat.

Welcome reddarin. I'll lift at the gym, but do cardio type workouts at home. I just can't handle more than 5 minutes on any cardio machine at the gym. It's like time just completely comes to a crawl.

Same here. When I was fat I was puzzled at where my backside had disappeared to. When I lost 60 pounds I found out it was still there, the bigger jeans and wearing them lower to accommodate my huge girth was the culprit.

Lessee. When I started I was about to buy 48 jeans (which was still a bit small but I didn't want to buy 50+ God forbid) and about to buy 4x button up casual shirts. When I got to 205 last year I was wearing 34s and had moved down to XL or L shirts depending on the mfg. I haven't worn 34 jeans since a couple of years after high school.

I live out in the boonies practically so any workouts I do are gonna have to be at home. There was an ex-Marine that had a small gym nearby but small town economics and the bad economy in general forced him to close up shop several months ago.

Reddarin - welcome aboard. I recommend you look into Paul Wade's Convict Conditioning for a progressive, effective home workout that requires only a pull-up bar. You start with very easy variants of bodyweight exercises (e.g. wall push-ups) and progress over time to the hardest versions (e.g. strict one-arm push-ups). You can't go wrong with CC.

My exercise is at home. Usually jogging on the treadmill. I also dabbled in p90x, which was great, but trying to get in 90+ minutes a day was next to impossible.

At my highest, I got up to 44 pants and a 50 jacket. I'm in 38 pants now, and am probably 10 pounds from reasonably wearing 36, which is probably as small as I will get. At 190 I liked the fit of the 36s better than the 34s.

I've got a little tingle in my dingle this morning. Picked up this baby, 18V Lithium Ion. My 14V Dewalt (bought around 98') batteries are completely shot. It's not worth it to buy new batteries compared to the price of new drills.

Those 18v drills are monsters heh.

Has anyone tried the super fast rechargeable? I think it was a Craftsman and it came out 2 or 3 years ago if memory serves. It recharges in 2 minutes or something unbelievable like that.

Nice Ooba. I love spending money on power tools that I rarely use. It drives my wife crazy. Of course, then I counter with the why do you need 30 purses and 10 pairs of black shoes.
