Good morning! Well, it's kind of nice to be back at work. As mentioned, I took off last Thursday and Friday. I didn't get everything done on my "to do" list - I watched WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to much TV with the Olympics. I'm already burned out

Anyway...finished my first week of Medi-Fast and I lost 13.6 pounds. I know that rate won't last, but it sure gets one off to a great start. Hoping to lose the 10 pounds from our first challenge and then I can start on the second.

Marilee, that is amazing! 13.6 pounds already and plenty of delicous food too!

We had one of those zuchinis that got away from us and got too big. I cut it in half, steamed it, scooped out the middle. Then I cut up some smaller ones and cooked them with onions and green peppers in olive oil. Mixed in some freshly grated parmesan and filled the two boats and baked for about 15 min. to melt the cheese. Not bad at all. The original recipe called for seasoned bread crumbs and fresh basil to be mixed in too but I left those out.

Running a little late today. Have a great Tuesday all!

Gibby...so happy for you!!!

chilled out this weekend...literally. i had the AC on from Friday eve to this a.m. caught up with some dvds and lots of Law & Order Criminal Intent episodes(mostly Goren & Eames (thank the gods).Of course there was, mercifully, no shortage of SEINFELD. I had enough liquid to keep me going, w/o interrupting my dimensional digression. I caught some Olympics: I have 1/2 dozen stations in english and spanish to watch it. i DID see one swimming event, the result of which did not sit well with me. It was the one which the Korean guy was disqualified after the event, he was the winner!!! they played the tape more than once. I did not see him leave the diving board any sooner than the others. I also caught a few seconds of ping pong. since when is that an Olympic Event? It is just a manner of time, when shooting pool and playing poker will be an Olympic event. It is great to start the work week on a Tuesday. Talk to y'all later. FF

Good morning!

Abi, there isn't plenty of food at all! Total calories per day are 800-1000. But, I'm not hungry and it's working so no complaints on this end. Since I am a binge eater, the portion-control is good for me.

Gibby, apart from the food....

what else is there on Medifast? as u know, i too am a life- long binger. Frankly, 800-1000 calories is a 1 meal deal for me. Multiply that by 3 for the minimum I used to enjoy on a daily basis, even on low carb. I am attempting to stay within 2000 cal a day. But I cannot do that consistently. I am so impressed with your recent accomplishments. FF

I am very impressed with how well you are doing also Marilee. I also thinks it is amazing that you are not hungry on only 800 to 1000 calories a day! Magic food!

August is here.

Let us see how I do in August. Fell asleep after Seinfeld 8pm, and woke up just in time for another 2 episodes of Seinfeld (2-3 AM). Talk about your biological clock! Needless to say, it is gonna be a high caffeine day. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI

well, well, well...since i left for nashville, marilee has lost the equivalent of a three-month-old baby, ff is on a (LC) roll, vicki is back from her baseball road trip with renewed motivation and abi overcame her fear of the scale!!!...i'm gonna have to go away more often!...

sorry i was sooo out of touch, but comcast blocked whatever wireless internet service i had been accessing at the apartment and i could not get them to set up my own while i was there...still don't have it...then dw and the boys drove my computer back so i didn't have to bring anything on the plane back tuesday night and they broke down in virginia and didn't get back until 1 a.m. last night...

had a great trip - very relaxing - lots of swimming - i hardly eat at all when i am there alone, but when i have to worry about the kids being hungry, i make sure there is food around so it is more like being at home...also, we eat out once a day and even with sensible choices, it ends up being more calories and salt than i need to eat...

so, i ate very sensibly, low carb, and gained 3 lbs., much of which i think is water as restaurant food has been salty...so, yesterday i weighed in at 215.2 lbs. and will spend this week trying to lose it!...

i am so happy to hear everyone doing so well and feeling so motivated...marilee, i am so proud of you for pulling yourself up and getting on a different horse that is working for you!...way-to-go girl!...

ff, we don't need to ever beat you up - you are our "daddy" here and we know you know what you need to do, whether you choose to do it or not is a choice we respect that you have the right to make...happy to see making the right choices is easier right now...

i'm not sure why, but i feel like i retain more fluid when i spend a lot of time in the pool...not sure if the chlorine has some effect or what it might be, and of course it might just be my imagination!...

have a great thursday everyone!!!

I have been watching you tube videos about canning tomato sauce. I have never done it before and would need to buy jars, canner etc. But, once the initial investment was done this year . . . Has anyone done this before?

Welcome back, Tony. We missed you as you can tell!

Vicki, that just sounds like too much work to me. Good luck.

Am still staying on plan - I'm real tired today which they said would happen in the beginning. Can't wait to weigh in on Monday and see if I dropped the 2 I want to drop.

no, i have not, nor do i want to do so much work.

i get all my tomato needs met at the market (super that is). Tony, welcome back. I am certain the 3 lbs is sodium & summer humidity too. Humidity will force us to hold onto water. the treatment for that is DRINK MORE WATER. that is what our leaders told us at WW, which i may rejoin in late Oct or early Nov, when i can count on the temps to be be low enough for me to function again. Yea, I know a lot of work. I just hope it is worth the effort. We will see. A friend loaned me a canner and jars. I just needed to buy lids and rings, tongs and other equipment.

thanks, marilee!...great to be back!...

vicki, i grew up in a big italian family and we always canned our own tomatoes and used them to make our "gravy" all year...it was a lot of work, but there is NO COMPARISON between sauce made with fresh canned tomatoes and store-bought...maybe i will start canning some myself!...definitely worth it!

skipped breakfast and had a nice salad for lunch topped with feta cheese...still feel fluid-y...gonna start guzzling water! :-)

Posted yesterday morning and right in the middle of it I lost the LCF site and then it wouldn't let me back in. Same problem I have had several times before. It says something like it can't make internet connection with the site?

Anyway, glad everyone is back posting. Tony, sorry your family had car trouble on the way back to NH. Hope it was nothing serious. I hate car trouble.

Talking about canning tomatoes, my sister has been busy roasting tomatoes, zuchini etc. from her garden. She then puts them through a sieve to separate the skins and seeds and freezes it for the winter. I bet that roasting them brings a nice added flavor to them. She will use the sauce in soups, lasagnas etc.

Read an interesting paper yesterday at this link. APOE-4: The Clue to Why Low Fat Diet and Statins may Cause Alzheimer's
Here is quote from the paper.
"I highly recommend a recent book written by the pediatric brain surgeon, Larry McCleary, M.D., called The Brain Trust Program [33]. This book gives a wealth of fascinating information about the brain, as well as specific recommendations for ways to improve cognitive function and avert later Alzheimer's. Most significantly, he recommends a diet that is high in cholesterol and animal fats, including an abundance of fish, seafood, meat, and eggs. He also recommends coconuts, almonds, avocados and cheese, all foods that contain a significant amount of fat, while encouraging the avoidance of "empty carbs." His knowledge on this subject grew out of his interest in helping his young patients heal more rapidly after brain trauma."

Have a great day all!

apparently, the pediatric brain surgeon knows

what i suspected intuitively. I do not take statins, nor will i, regardless of what my chol count is. I have said it before, if chol was so important an indicator of heart health, i should have been dead long before i started these blitzes. I also said on more than one occasion, that I just want to go with a smile on my face. You do not get a smile on my face with the traditional low calorie and low fat diet. It may work for some, but not for the troll. well, it is Friday once again. I may actually get out of the house this weekend, despite the heat. Some chores cannot be postponed. btw, Tony, is that a tomato based sauce you refer to as gravy? FF

Good morning!

Tony, you better not be kidding, because I am planning on visiting you. And I want that "gravy". Back in my youth, I dated an Italian and he gave me his family's recipe for sauce (gravy-ff). They were from Southern Italy and it was sooooooooo good! Surprising simple - no onions - just Italian tomatoes, olive oil, lots of garlic, sweet basil, s&p. I think that's it - I have made it in a long time. But man, it was so delicious and authentic. I'll check the recipe this weekend and see if I missed anything.

Now I'm hungry - dang it!

of course i'm serious, marilee!...and my family is from southern italy too...in our tomato sauce (gravy - ff) we use exactly what you mentioned for ingredients - no onions, peppers, etc...just take olive oil and add garlic and then tomatoes - the best canned tomatoes are pastene kitchen-ready with no salt added...let that simmer a bit and then we brown our meat (sausage, meatballs, pork or whatever) in a separate frying pan in olive oil and then add them to our sauce and let it simmer over low heat for several hours so the gravy absorbs all the flavor of the meat and vice versa...everything gets tender and delicious...can't beat it...i don't even add basil, but dw does when she makes it...i do add a bit of pepper and parsley...another trick is to add a couple of whole carrots to the sauce while it is simmering as it neutralizes any acidity and is an alternative to sugar to slightly sweeten the sauce...when it is done you can discard or eat the carrots...simple and awesome - ff, even you can do it! :-)

btw, i fully expected you to forego the doughnuts marilee - you are doing soooo well!

abi, are you still at the candle factory?...it was an alternator, but happened at 3 a.m. so it wasn't fixed until noon the next day...

gonna drink a lot today and get in the pool...i am a bit out of my routine although i did my exercise yesterday...i have to alter my exercise in nashville as i don't have my weights there...

i'm thinking maybe salad for lunch and steak on the grill for dinner...may head to maine sometime this weekend...

let's all have a great friday!!!

yes i can, Tony.

I am waiting till i retire, and have time to tinker in the kitchen. btw, Tony do you have any family in Campania or Lazio? If i ever get to ONEderland, and have oodles of latinum at my beck and call, I will make the pilgrimage to Italy, and perhaps look them up. I did that in Greece in 1971. My Greek classmates gave me the addresses of their cousins. They appreciated my stopping by very very much. FF

ff, i've never been there but want to take my kids someday...our family comes from two little mountain villages between naples and rome - nearest city is isernia, i believe...the population of the villages is 400 and 600, respectively, and they are lovely...all stone buildings and tranquil with olive groves and sheep...i have cousins from here who have visited there and loved it...if you go, i will fill you in...

my family were stone masons who came here and built a lot of the beautiful architecture in rhode island - like on the newport mansions - but they were paid pittances back then...my grandfather was 3 when he came here and was the first to go to college and became an architect and home builder...he was my best friend growing up and we lived next door and i saw him virtually every day of my life til he died when i was 20 years old...

they were poor, hard-working people who lived for their children and grandchildren...i have lots of great memories and had a wonderful childhood...

Tony, you were very fortunate to know your grandfather and to be close to him. I never knew either of my grandfathers - they both died with they were young.

Second generation Italian - that's great! I am Scots, Irish and English. I have no idea when my family(s) settled here. But, being from the Old Country, it was probably hard for them, as well.

Tony, i must research what Isernia was called in antiquity.

It could have been Lucanian, Samnite, Greek or Etruscan to begin with. Of course, culturally and politically it eventually became Roman. i will get back to you on that. Back to food. If I succeed getting out of the house, and getting my lc bread, then it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out where I am going after that, after a brief sojourn at B & N across the street. it was Samnite first and called Aesernia.

by 295bc it was already in Roman hands after the 3 Samnite wars. Just google Isernia and read the wickipedia entry. I will finish reading when i am free. I must go back to work in a minute or 2. FF

Tony, does my photo answer your question? lol

Too bad about the alternator going out. Mine did that the week I flew to Missouri in May. I was so happy it did not happen on my trip to the airport!

Marilee, there is a guy who buys donuts for the whole crew every Thursday at the candle factory so I will be tempted quite often as long as they keep me coming here. You be strong and I'll be strong!

FF, if it is really true that low fat can affect peoples brains our country is going to be in serious mental trouble down the pike. We have all been brainwashed into thinking low fat is healthy. Personally I do believe that good fats are good for my brain and my brain needs all the help it can get! lol

Have no idea what we will be eating today. Need to go grocery shopping this morning and see if the lawn over at the house needs mowing. Will check in later. Have a great Saturday all!
