It would be lovely to meet either KT or Shelley--or best of all, both of you.
OH, the Westin is great...walking distance to so many downtown things! We used to stay there when DH's company would bring us to Corporate/Seattle while we were living in Anchorage. I loved it! All expenses paid! You can walk a couple blocks and get on the monorail and ride to Seattle Center where the Space Needle is, and the EMP (Experience Musical ??? can't remember) and it's a bizarre building but fun...owned/built by the co-founder of Microsoft if I recall correctly. KT, help me out here!!!! You can also walk to Pike Place Market from the Westin.....and so much good fishy foods!

I did this about 15 years ago...met a group of quilters in Minneapolis (we met online) and 12 of us met...2 from Canada, one from Scotland (true!!!) and one from California. The rest were here and there and it was fun!

Let's work on this, okay?!

I live in Idaho.....way north, about an hour from the Canadian border. Closest town on a map would be Sandpoint. It's a gorgeous place....huge lake and mountains all around for skiing and such in the winter. Summer is boating, water skiing, fishing, golf, etc. It's a "resort" community, but we live here year round and don't ski.

My mother and I went back to meet her birth family in 1985...she was "given away" at the age of 2.5....and one of the birth relatives found paperwork after my birth grandmother died (in a hidden locked box). Too bad they didn't know this sooner. Anyway, I went back with her then to see the house she grew up in, and to also find her birth family...just like in the movies. That was so fun and scary at the same time. I haven't been back since, but remember how beautiful the area was.

I'd definitely like to work on making this happen! I will be staffing an exhibit at the conference (I work on projects that make health data easier for researchers to use and will have to stand by to show it off), so I'm pretty much stuck during the days of the conference, but happy to meet and explore before or after the conference. I won't book a ticket until we've had a chance to think about this more ... My schedule is open directly before and after the conference.

And thanks for the Seattle sightseeing suggestions.

I've spent the day exploring the thread on the Perfect Health Diet under other plans. There are definitely people interested in researching material and focusing on health as well as weightloss posting there, and I recommend checking it out if anyone has time and inclination. The Perfect Health Diet is kind of a blend of Nourishing Traditions sorts of foods (e.g., liver, egg yolk, bone broth, fermented veggies, etc.) and sort of low carb but with encouragement to eat "safe starches" (rice, potatoes, root veggies) and a little less fat (65 percent of calories from fat, as I recall, but more open to non-grain carbs), researched by two scientists resolving their own health problems through diet and then doing lots of research into diet and nutrition.

I thought of you, KT, when people were discussing potatoes and potato hacks. From what I gathered, there's a theory that the reason the potato diet works so well is that the liver draws on the body's fat stores to metabolize the potato, when it isn't eaten with much fat or protein. Does that sound right to you? Some people you know from the JUDDD potato hack thread are very active on the PHD (perfect health diet, though I keep reading it as PhD doctor of philosophy when I see it) thread. There were also some comments about how people who have been doing low carb may have blood sugar spikes with potato or rice consumption for a few (2-3) days, but then their blood sugar tends to drop ... Interesting, but I'm too chicken to try it so long as JUDDD/NK is working at least part of the time.

I lived in Montana for a couple years. Idaho is beautiful. I want to retire and move to Ceour d'Alene.

Wow, what a story. For some reason, when people put toddlers up for adoption it seems extra sad. Babies are one thing, but toddlers you've had a chance to know and bond with, and them with you. And why did it take so long for you to decide you can't care for your child? Anyway, I'm sure it's more complicated than that.

Shelley and Svenska,

It is very sweet of you both to want to meet up. I'm socially awkard and find it difficult to talk to most people, I am no good with chit chat, and meeting strangers is particularly difficult for me. I will have to pass.

It's hard to say which of you is cuter, but I think your cuteness beats out Jingles' by a hair. Thanks for answering Shelley's question; I've been wondering, too.

No problem, Key Tones. It will be nice to see some things that you've mentioned in your posts. I'm definitely planning on picking up some of that orange tea.

How fun that you want to retire in Coeur d'Alene....that's where I go shopping. It has a Costco and "stores"!!!!!! Here we only have WalMart and Coldwater Creek and lots of realtors and banks! ha ha

My mother had a recurring nightmare all her life...had no idea why or where it came from until we found her family and heard the story. Her dream was of "getting dressed up" and bundled up in a new coat/shoes, etc. and then driving a long ways and looking "out the back window of the car" as they left her home...and then she would wake up terrified. The "grandmother" got new clothes for her..put her in the back of the car and drove her across state lines to deliver her to a doctors office and just leave her! When we finally found the birth mother, she had already died, but she did NOT want to have her child given away....we found plenty of family members who told us about this abusive woman who essentially "stole" my mother while babysitting her and giving her away. The birth mother had no way to find her as the "grandmother" wouldn't say anything other than "she's gone" and such. She never had that nightmare again once she realized that she WAS the little girl in the back of that car going for the ride away from her home. Life is so strange.

Oh...I just LOVE this photo and always have. What a little cutie you were at 6!!! Oh my....

Jingles is also cute, but I think "you take the cake/prize" on cuteness! Such fun. Thanks for sharing.

You are doing so well with the weight/blood ketone readings....I'm glad it's working for you.

Hey you guys...I have decided to stop doing NK and testing. I have several meters, some unopened, and 5 sealed boxes of NK strips (10 per box) and one box of 50 glucose strips...and 5 sealed (from an opened box) of NK strips. Anyone have any idea of what would be the best way for me to sell these without breaking the rules of LCF forum stuff about links and such? I don't want to break rules, but am not sure if I can list things, even though they are not for sale through the sponsor of his group. Any thoughts? Maybe ebay?

Hi all - I have nothing much to report here. I'm still doing the potato hack, modified with a little extra here and there (limited to 250 calories per day non-potato foods).

I hit the wall on the bike ride last weekend - I made it 15 miles no problem. The last mile of the 20 miles was shakey - I barely made it back to the car! My legs were so sore, but within a few hours of stopping, it was mostly gone. I am only a little sore now, but not bad. I don't think it was a matter of strength, I just don't think I'm eating enough to fuel a bike ride. I'll be sure to eat up a few days before doing something like that again, or clip it back to something under 20 miles. I certainly felt the cold the last mile, since I couldn't cycle fast enough to stay warm at that point. Ugh!

So with my 250 calories I have been one or two eating eggs per day to try to recover. I don't think I can eat enough potatoes to get enough amino acids for recovery. I think I would need to eat 20 potatoes for that, so , no go. I had to eat more rice a couple of nights after the ride as well (more potatoes just won't go down) for fatigue.

I am only down another 1/2 pound so far this week, but nothing on #s yet - 203 3/4 to 203 1/4 is all. I don't post quarter pounds since they don't matter to me much. I could still be bloated from the muscle soreness - I certainly was a couple of days ago. It is possible more will show up. I have two more mornings to weigh in on plan, then it is my birthday and someone is baking me a cake, so, well....I think I'm going out for pad thai or something too. I checked it out - pad thai noodles are rice noodles, so it might not be too far off plan, but the birthday cake will be!

I admire your determination, Key Tones. I hope you have a lovely birthday and a delicious meal that isn't just potatoes! A 20 mile bike ride is impressive, no matter what the rider is eating--and on potatoes, especially so.

LOL, great minds run together, as my mother used to say. Or it's simply indisputable that 6-year-old Dr. J. was even cuter than the adorable Jingles, and anyone seeing the avatar would come to that conclusion.

Thanks. I am feeling pretty good right now. I think I will try potato hack proper, no additions, starting now through dinner Thursday (my birthday dinner) to see what dry potato only + spices is really like, and maybe lose a little more weight. I'll eat up Thurs night-Friday, then another bike ride Saturday and hope I do not hit the wall again. Woot!

Drinking iced coffee and iced drinks today. Slept with light blanket last night. Still no cool baths (ugh). Thinking about it...I need to find a spa/pool thermometer or something, and a food scale.

I am curious how many calories I really am eating. I want to weigh these potatoes. I am realizing why the mexican grocer has cheap potatoes. They are odd sizes compared to what I see on the shelf at the grocery store. I have the rejects!!! This last bag especially, the yukon golds are either really super large or really small.

Here's something that I picked up over on the Perfect Health Diet Thread: Supposedly one can get the health benefits of intermittent fasting if one eats protein within an eight hour window but consumes low-protein fats outside of that 8-hour window. Thus, for example, one could have coffee with fat (butter, HWC, and/or coconut oil) for breakfast, and then fit lunch through dinner into an 8 hour window (or a 5 hour window, depending on one's preferences) and still get the benefits of IF without starving in the morning. Just a possible additional tool for people to keep in mind.

I've been doing just fluids and a little fat on JUDDD DDs lately, and I have been desperately craving protein with fat as soon as my up day starts. (Before, I was been doing more calories and lean protein as my intake on DDs.) Anyway, I figured out this made sense because my average protein on JUDDD across 2 days would be only about 30 grams/day if I weren't eating protein on DDs. Seems like a simple math problem that just didn't occur to me before. Anyway, I guess I need to up my protein on JUDDD UDs, but then wonder how that will affect NK ... so, long story short, I guess I'd better start doing the blood testing for nutritional ketosis after all. Shelley, I'm interested in following up on your post ... I'll be in touch about that.

Tonight a friend took me out to dinner at a jazz club, where we heard Judy Collins perform (her voice and range have hardly changed since I listened to her records in college), and I ordered dessert for the first time in over a year--chocolate cake, since it was a birthday celebration for me. Anyway, it was very good chocolate cake--intense and rich--and I enjoyed it, but I'm fine with going back right on plan (DD on JUDDD tomorrow) and waiting another year or so before I order a rich dessert again. I can deal with eating rich desserts about as often as I eat lobster--once a year or so.

Well it seems I have a lot of catching up to do . First off, I live about 25 miles west of Cleveland, OH so drjlocarb and I are practically neighbors Drjlocarb I do think you are cuter than jingles, and it probably is those very nice socks and tennis shoes - think I might have had some like that when I was young.

Shelley that was a heartbreaking story about your mother. How could anyone do that . I was in Ceour D'Alene in January 2010. I was in Spokane in 2007 and 2010 to attend U. S. Figure Skating Championships (I'm an insane fan). On the second trip I was able to hookup with a tour to Ceour D'Alene and ate at a restaurant overlooking the lake. They had a number of shops in the same building and the whole area was indeed beautiful. I am sorry that NK isn't working for you. I am wondering if it will ever work for me.

Svenskamae I don't know how you can survive on 30g of protein a day. I'm glad you had a great birthday dinner. The cake sounds awesome!

Key Tones I give you major props for doing a 20 mile bike ride. Glad the potato hack is still working for you. I've never been to Seattle, but I've been to Portland Oregon and Spokane twice. I enjoyed Portland a lot -had great weather until the ice storm that happened on my last day there. Have a great time with your birthday dinner! Enjoy!

Drjlocarb I hope when you go on your cruise in May it is the low carb cruise I've read about. If it is, I beg you to ask the questions important to us!! How come this is so danged near impossible for some of us?????

Cathy . Hope things are going ok. I haven't read the NK threads for a couple of days but think that is where I last saw you.

I am hovering right under by longterm stall weight of 192. I've been doing fairly well since Monday, but getting the protein down below 50g a day is just realllllly hard. I am not sure that I will ever be in NK. The few tests I've done are all "low".

I mentioned a "liver dump" a few posts back and I was talking about the gluconeogenisis sp??? that occurs usually in the early morning hours. I have noticed for years that I can be sound asleep, feel kind of warm, and then check blood glucose and it might be 30-40 points higher than when I went to bed. When my blood sugar actually goes low (70or below) I do react. The dump seems to come because the liver signaling is messed up and thinks I am low when I am not. The endo I used to see mentioned this a number of times and maybe he was correct. Metformin is supposed to correct this....but doesn't do a great job for me. The dose hasn't been adjusted in 8 or 9 years so maybe that is the problem.

Thanks Mobear.

Man, the timing of my birthday couldn't be worse...I was 201 this morning, and tonight I am actually 200! I started the potato hack at 213. I think I must have seriously bloated up after the bike ride and it is all just dumping out now and revealing the result of eating just potatoes all week. My face is really thinning out, and all my pants are loose through the hips and thighs. This really seems to be fat loss. I was thinking about stopping after tonight, but now, gosh it is just so effective, I think I must continue.

I was going to do just dry potatoes today but caved at lunch at the thought of some butter (I have Kerrygold in a bag in the refrigerator at work, and I put my potatoes in there) but that was the only time.

I am starting to really like the taste of potatoes, peeled and sliced plain on a plate and microwaved until the pieces around the outer edge of the plate are just slightly brown and chewy. I know that sounds strange.

I am perfectly comfortable, really! I'm content here enjoying a cup of tea with lots of sweetener. I have been drinking a LOT of chai, cinnamon apple, cinnamon orange, and cinnamon spice teas. I think I go through six or eight tea bags per day. I have my usual two large cups of coffee every day too.

My blood sugar is higher in the mornings if I eat a smaller quantity of potatoes, if I eat egg with the potato at dinner, or if I don't eat dinner (90s). Otherwise, morning fasting glucose has still been in the 80s. I have not seen a single fasting glucose over 100!

Why is the glucose reading higher with a mixed meal at dinner or if I don't eat dinner? The highest fasting glucose was 98 with no dinner the night before. Good grief I don't understand.

Anyway, birthday party lunch at work tomorrow (I assume cake included, but I don't know), dinner out with a friend tomorrow night and birthday cake. Then lunch with a coworker Friday, then my friend has a birthday Friday night. I am a little freaked out at the thought of eating PUFAs; I know that frosting is just made of the worst stuff, but I don't get to bake my cake. I would love to make some frosting with butter or cream cheese! Sigh. We are, at least, sharing one cake. I think I will eat just small slices and maybe defrost some avocado chocolate pudding as a secret treat when everyone is gone!!! I really want the opportunity to make my gallbladder squeeze. I know all about gallbladder attacks. I mean, I haven't had one, but I know low fat crash dieting is hazardous. It is important to make the gallbladder work once in a while.

I would love to crack into the 190s this weekend, but I think it won't happen, and even if it does tomorrow morning, well, it will be vapor so....

Wow, I'm still dropping weight. I hit 199 this morning, so, I managed to give myself my birthday present! I didn't try to dehydrate; I drank a cup of cinnamon orange tea right at bedtime after I weighed in but was up at 3:30 am, you know...

I won't go too crazy with the food over the next few days, and I'm staying off the scale until next weigh in on the honeybadger's thread (next Friday). I think I'm doing the Centennial Trail Sunday - another long bike ride. I hope I hang on to 199 by then.

This is so much easier than the protein-sparing modified fast I did last year. I am just so puzzled by this thing and how comfortable it is to do.
