I am back to serious NK seeking.

This past month was full of roadblocks...softball tourneys, camping trips, parents visiting for a week, etc. Just not conducive to high fat eating. I just couldn't serve the parents coconut bark for breakfast. No time for measuring and weighing and tracking. I am just not that good at low ptn/hi fat to be able to wing it...yet. I did stay vlc so I just need to get back into the mp/hf swing of things.

I have been without internet and tv for 24+ hours until just an hour ago and I can't believe how isolating that was. I couldn't even get my 'smart' phone to pick up email. Not so smart!!! Anyway, glad to have it back.

That pie avi was bacon, spinach quiche. Now it is egg salad on rye.

Mobear, glad the storm wasn't so bad for you.
Dr J., I hear you.
Cathy, I love egg salad. And I hate being without my technology! I almost panicked last summer when we went camping and I was out of range. That was telling about how dependent I have become. Sheesh.

I am doing alright. My turmoil has calmed somewhat, or at least my perspective has become less frantic. I think eating right helps with that a great deal. I do admit to eating 4 mini chocolate bars last night, and putting 4 crackers in my chili. But I was still in the 157s this morning. So not too bad. Tonight we are taking the kids out to eat at the buffet. I will load up on salad. I may have a few spoonfuls of this or that. I've barely eaten all day in anticipation of this eventuality. I'm just being honest here. But I'll avoid the desserts, rolls and breads.

Cathy - oh my gosh, I washed my iPhone last night. I can't tell you how upsetting that was. I couldn't concentrate on work until I got another one. I think with no internet too I would really be out of sorts!

My new plan is really effective. I don't understand it. The dropping dairy and lowering protein is really working. I ate an embarassing amount of chocolate this week too with it being all over the office. I ate the horrible clif protein bars out of lack of time (instead of salmon or the seafood blend, but had salmon and seafood last weekend and will do same this weekend). Seriously. I'm down another 2 pounds, perhaps 3 (guessing what morning weight will be gauging by tonight). I'm floored. I've been eating a large avocado for lunch, or two small ones spaced as late breakfast, late lunch. Dinner is usually a large bowl of cauliflower soup made with a package of cauliflower (butter, unsweetened almond milk, salt, pepper). One night I ate a whole package of frozen blueberries from trader joes.

The day I ate chicken for breakfast, I was starving. I won't be doing that again. I would never have guessed that meat and dairy were causing me problems.

The hips are feeling better but only as long as I stay off of stairs.

Key Tones so happy to hear you have found something that is working for you

Drj I completely understand about the difficulty of doing NK on the run. On my recent trip I had no problem with the lc aspect - but the moderate protein was difficult to do.

I don't know if my phone survived yet! I took it to the AT&T store, and they told me they think it is a working phone with a dark screen. The rep referred me to Jet City. They charge a max of $125 to fix it, or it is free if they can't fix it. We'll see. I heard Apple charges $200 just for a new screen.

I purchased a new iPhone since my daughter wants one anyway. If they can fix it, I'll give the new one to her. If they can't fix it, we will have to wait for August to get another new iPhone to avoid paying the penalty. I was really annoyed and upset, but now that I have the new iPhone 5, oh my gosh, that thing is fast!!! I want to keep it now

RE: diet - thanks. I don't undestand it. It goes against things I believe and what has worked for me in the past. I peeked at Dr. Furhman's plan again but I could not do it. I hate beans! Perhaps I have run myself off into a ditch on micronutrients or something or the dairy was killing me. I do remember reading something about a lot of dairy blocking vitamin A absorption or something. My skin is just great. My hands are soft instead of dry. Hmph. I might look into Cordain's plan again.

I will say that I use a vitamix to blend the cauliflower. I also use it to blend up low carb fruit into smoothies. Perhaps this really does allow for more absorption of nutrients.

Thank you!

I looked at Courdain's paleo book on Amazon. I am pretty certain I already purchased that book and it is somewhere in my house. I have a lot of books I never read.

206 now. Still feeling in control. It seems like 199 could be do-able. We'll see. Fat is like concrete to get rid of.

Still can't believe how much better I feel. I'm not freezing cold all the time anymore. I have enough energy to get things done.

Hello newlife1217!

Congrats on your weight loss - 35 lbs. in 4 months is very good. It is very normal to have a pause in weight loss such as you describe. Just keep with your program.

Congratulations, Key Tones, on feeling better and losing. I'm happy that you've found something that works for you--at least for now.

Maureen, congratulations to you, too, for going below 190 after your trip. I hope that this sticks and that the scale continues to go down. Is it possible that you were eating more calories while travelling and that made your body willing to let go of some weight?

Speck, I hope things continue to be somewhat better for you.

I've been doing nutritional ketosis plus JUDDD, and have lost about 3 pounds in about 2 weeks, which is great progress for me. Down days (around 300-500 calories) are still tough sometimes, in terms of hunger or feeling cold, but I do feel calm and energetic, consistently, even on the low calorie days. I'll stay with this, for at least a few months, if I continue to see some losses. I am crossing my fingers that I get down to the 180s by Thanksgiving.

Cathy, I've been reading about some other sorts of supplements on the JUDDD part of this board; is there any sign that the berberine is helping you?

I still haven't managed to make one of your savory cheesecakes, drj, but I hope to get around to that soon. Since I eat such small, boring meals on down days, I have to get used to cooking less stuff and keeping a semi-bare refrigerator, which is a change for me. Maybe I'll make and bring a savory cheesecake to a Christmas party that I know I have attend next month.

Svenkamae congratulations on your success with JUDDD. I only tried that plan for about a week because I had some extremely low blood glucose readings and just couldn't figure out how to adjust the insulin to avoid those.

I'm not sure why the scale dropped . I weighed Wednesday morning and weight was 189.4 I actually wished the heck I knew why this happened but I'm not sure. In the 5 months I've been trying NK, I've gone up and down from 1600 to 900 and never noted any significant change in weight. During the trip I did eat too much protein...and ate breakfast (eggs) every day. I had to take a couple of extra units of insulin here and there. The really big difference was a MUCH lower stress level and better sleep. The ride up and back home was stressful, but the time in Windsor was fun and laid back. I do take a supplement to help with stress (Relora) but being home is just much more difficult.

Woohoo for the scale inching down more, Mobear! Every little bit helps!

If the big difference you can point to is difference in stress levels, maybe elevated cortisol is an issue for you. That can stop weight loss dead or, worse yet, pack on fat, especially abdominal fat. It is possible to test for elevated cortisol with a saliva test (spit in vials 3 times over 2 days, send it off) and you can ask your doctor to order the test or order it yourself over the Internet. I was treated for adrenal fatigue due, in part, to work-related and relationship-related stress, a few years ago, and felt better afterwards. Or consider what you could add to your life that might help lower stress at home--meditation, guided imagery and progressive relaxation, yoga-style deep breathing, more sleep, and/or qi gong (following a DVD) are all relatively cheap and fairly effective in managing stress, if you can find the time to do them. Massage is very relaxing if you can find the money to pay for it. I hope you find something that helps--reduced stress is a good thing in itself, even if it doesn't result directly in weightloss.

I seem to be having a very difficult time getting back into moderate protein. I've probably had 55-60g a couple of times this week. Got to stop!!

Many years ago I practiced meditation during a very stressful time in my life. I'm trying to get back into it, but struggling.

Today is a new day, I'm pushing the "reset" button and doing my best to stay around 45g of protein.

Hang in there ladies.

I went to a grief support group for surviving the holidays. Maybe you will see something in here that will help.

Suggestions were much longer. Sometimes, I think we just need to give ourselves permission to put ourselves first and only do what we can handle.

Do what you need to get through every day.
Hope for grace, plan for survival.
Make a list of things that make you feel better.
Give yourself an escape route when you make plans.
Take moments when you think about the small things you are grateful for.

OH.MY.GOSH 188.6 I have been struggling to get back to 45g of protein. Did ok Monday and then got up at midnight and ate 1/2 of a small savory cheesecake! Was so ticked at myself.

Tuesday I did really well. Have to admit I've been eating a lot of shiratake and quite a few fat bombs. Calories up around 1350-1450. All day yesterday I kept thinking maybe I wouldn't weigh Wednesday morning because I didn't want to be over 190 again. But, this morning I weighed 2x....once at 188.8 and once at 188.4 so I'm calling it 188.6.

Maybe the Swedish doctor Svenskamae posted about is right and it takes some of us a very long time to adjust to NK. I've also been sleeping better. I got a cold in October which is long gone except for the cough which is still lingering. My DH is a pain in the *** and says he doesn't want me sleeping upstairs because it bothers him. The result, I am sleeping much better on the couch in the family room downstairs

I am still sticking around here in the "stalled" thread. I post a little in the main lobby and recipes, but honestly every time posters call this a "fad" and declare there has to "be a deficit" I just want to cry for the lack of sensitivity.

Those neigh sayers are only limiting themselves - some just don't have the capacity to think much outside their own box. Sensitivity would be something that would never even occur to them and they likely don't know the meaning of the word anyway.

Hurrah for the loss, Maureen! It's really heartening that you are experiencing some losses after all your very hard work and very long waiting.

Here's hoping for more great reports of further losses for you (and for everyone here).

I read the monthly nutritional ketosis thread, pretty regularly, and it's rare to hear people there talking about "just lower your calories ..."

I've been reading the book "The Smarter Science of Slim." I don't especially like it, because the author oversimplifies information (for example, referring to insulin resistence as a "hormonal clog.") He also is oddly down on fat, especially saturated fat, and recommends low fat dairy and only lean meat, though he doesn't give a justification for this; overall, he recommends a moderately low carb, high protein diet. BUT there are a few very effective chapters about how the whole calories in, calories out is inconsistent with a bunch of experimental evidence (on people and on rats). So if anyone here wants to read more summary information on how calories in/calories out isn't the whole story--and get referrals to some experiments demonstrating that--they might want to check out that book. It's available as a not very expensive paperback and might be in libraries.

Yay Mobear!!!

I am still perplexed at protein being an issue! I had a lot of left over chicken and eating it triggered my appetite. So weird...

I have stocked up on soup supplies.

Another interesting study. Not just about night eating, but reversing the damage caused by eating your omega 3s!
