Anytime from November through April is good. November and April can be warm - I love December-March.....

I miss "weather", too, but I don't miss shoveling it and driving in it.

Sardines are great - but very "fishy" tasting. Try putting a little sour cream and cream cheese with a dash of pickle juice with them? It kind of cuts the strong flavor a bit.

I love pickled herring so I try to make them like that...

i don't think i'm a sardine guy - just listening to you guys is making me cringe!...how easy this would be if carbs tasted like sardines!...

ff, let us know how the workout goes...i am on the edge of my seat...spent a couple of hours in the pool today and did my "every-other-day" workout as well, so i should be buff by thursday...lol...

marilee, we got caught in a dust storm in az during one of our RV trips...it is amazing to see, but scary...i wish i could miss shoveling snow for awhile... :-)

having a good day so far...keep your fingers crossed...

WOE: low carb
Start Date: January 2008
Well kids were supposed to leave in the morning and then this afternoon the check engine light came on. Car in the shop and we won't know until sometime tomorrow what the status is. DD trying not to be too stressed. She and the 4 grandkids just went to visit a cousin and husband that have been out of town this week.

We had ham today and the kids loved it. Of course here comes the too much salt water retention. The good thing is the scales are in their bathroom so I have not been weighing this week. The bad thing is I have not been weighing this week. lol

I used to like sardines on saltine crackers with a little hot sauce on top. I don't eat crackers now so don't eat sardines much any more either.

Marilee, those dust storms are so eerie looking. Until this year I don't remember ever seeing one on tv before. Do you have them every year or are they rare?

Tony, my fingers are crossed!

abi, i think you are sabotaging the car so the kids can stay longer - just a gut feeling...lol...

the good thing about water retention is that it's temporary!...

talk about baptism by FIRE!!!

the AC at the gym died exactly 5 minutes before I got there. Of course, I was committed, so I stayed. Great way to get the water in, of course. It is still pretty much guesswork. I will have to feel the machines out as I gain experience. The gym is understaffed. The person at the front desk is always pre-occupied with the business end (like a good Ferenghi should be). So, let us see what I can accomplish at year end. This the the last time I will discuss it. The sardines I got were packed in water. There were only 3 ingredients listed; sardines, salt and water. The next time, as I mentioned above, I will fry the little devils, and add some condiments to them to make them more palatable. The health benefits are too good to pass up. Yeah, NYC has the heat, the humidity, the crime, and the perverts. However, we have, SO FAR, been spared earthquakes, tornados, and dust storms. It is about what you are willing to deal with, and what you are used to. I'll take the perverts over the natural disasters.(besides, the perverts are not really interested in me anyway).FF

ff, ever heard of hot yoga? They do yoga in a hot room. You did hot cardio.

Hi all, I am in the process of redoing my kitchen (updating) mostly with paint. I am painting my kitchen walls and ceiling, back entryway and down the basement stair walls and ceiling today. Tomorrow or Friday, the inside of the cupboards. Woodwork will be cleaned and touched up, Monday a new sink, Tuesday I will be painting my countertop. This better count as extra exercise LOL. Up and down the stairs and step stool plus all the reaching better count for something.

Despite being in the kitchen, I haven't been eating which is good. I guess keeping busy keeps mind off of the food. Gee, who knew LOL

We usually get a least one a year during the monsoon season. Check out the weather channel or youtube for some great shots and videos of the one two weeks ago - it was the biggest we've every had - totally awesome!

Good luck, Tony!

vicki, i think it ALL counts as exercise!...good luck with the kitchen "updating" - mine needs it too...

marilee, it is so beautiful where you live - i think a sandstorm once in a while is a small price to pay for the winters you enjoy there...

ff, nice job at the gym...what are you not gonna discuss again: the gym or the sardines?...lol...

all is well here...my scale wouldn't turn on today when i stepped on it...batteries must be dead - i'm hoping it wasn't giving me falsely low readings while the batteries were dying...i'd die if i find out i'm really 220 and not 213...not that i'm happy about still being 213...

i have to take responsibility for being in maintenance mode at 212-213...i've been in that range for weeks...the good news is, i've got this particular plateau under control (i don't seem to be at risk of gaining any more) - the bad news is that the plateau is too high...i am acting like i am happy at this weight...i don't look bad and i feel good, except for the hip, but for health reasons, i need to be 30 lbs lighter and i need to find the motivation to work toward that...

i know myself well enough to know that i can't force it...i need to cut calories and that's all there is to it...

thanks for the support guys...your success inspires me!

Tony, before u cut calories...try cutting out some sodium

not all, just some. it could be water retention owing to all the salt. But do not starve yourself. I find that being out of the house more than in the past, i have less opportunity to eat, but what i do eat is highly caloric. Perhaps, by the time i am flirting with 1derland, perhaps I may have to do the same. But, if i have to live perpetually hungry, i would rather stay morbidly obese. It was excessive hunger that always caused me to regain all my weight 7 times between 1991 & 2008. So, keep the mayo, and the saturated fat coming. I do also consume omega 3s as well. I may be going to Mohegan Sun in CT on 7/31/11. There is a chinese bus in Bklyn that will take me for $13.00 round trip. That's right...THIRTEEN. I will do Atlantic City after the weather cools down. I must say i am quite excited. I have already researched the low carb possibilities there. Quite a lot. As for gambling, i am sticking to my $60.00/15 minute limit. But it is all inside and environmentally controlled. Plenty of walking opportunity as well.(now all i need to do is learn chinese pdq ) FF

Well, guys...I'm not having much success this round and it's my fault. My head isn't in the game. So, I've decided to stop the drops and go on maintenance for a couple of weeks and then start again. No point in wasting product.

Sure, if you want to send them to me.

I've been at this round since 6/14 and I think my body wants to stop for a while - which is fine. I don't like long rounds and I don't know why I did it this time. It's hard....mentally and physically.

The good news is - I feel smaller - getting curvier in the right places and clothes are getting even more loose then before, so good things are happening, even if the scale is giving me fits.

did someone say "curvier"???...i love curvier!...lol...marilee, i think you're smart recognizing when you need to maintain instead of losing...i think that is the thing that has helped me not gain everything back...good luck holding steady, kid...

ff, keep me posted on your trip to mohegan sun...if i'm around, i might meet you there and buy you lunch or dinner...good advice on the salt, btw - thanks!

good day today - not too hungry...still no batteries for the scale, so i'm just hoping i don't get a horrible surprise when i finally climb on...

Hi Guys

I have been MIA from these boards and from LC life these past few days/week. I am a bit of a mess. Got sick and had a back eye infection and have had non stop visitors. I have been so tired that my brain hasn't been working properly and consequently I've been having chocolate binges. My normal meals have been fine but the extra choc has not been my friend.

My good friend flies home tonight and I have a low key August (work busy but socially more quiet) so I plan on re-focusing my energy back on myself and my health and weight loss.

I am taking it one meal at a time. Yesterday I stayed on plan the whole day so I feel good.

Just trying to get back to this site and be accountable I know how it works so well for me.

welcome back, bec...i missed you!...hope your eye is better - it's so hard to do something like this when you are not feeling well...you've proven to yourself how strong you are re: both the chocolate and even being out of your routine on vacation, so i have no doubt you will get back on track once you're feeling up to it... :-)

marilee, i think most guys like curvy too...

gonna spend the next couple of days by the pool - supposed to be in the upper 90s!...the heat has curtailed my appetite, so that's good...

Niyaoma, on-plan HEWMONS

I had a most pleasant surprise last night. After i got out of u-no-where, the weather was much cooler, with some pleasant breezes. So, before i went upstairs, i sat outside for almost an hour. But i had to have supper, lest my blood glucose go wacko. I had Happy Family (steamed, so as to avoid salt sabotage). I sprinkled minced garlic on it, and some hot pepper flakes, to perk it up a tad. It was very good. Today I wore all black, which is the opposite of what is recommended on such a hot humid day. But I wore black out of defiance to the sun God. I am showing him that I will NOT be bullied or browbeaten by his rays. It is a foregone conclusion that on July 31, i will be taking that Chinese bus to Mohegan Sun (it leaves at 8:30 of the clock from Bklyn, and departs at 4:30pm of the clock for the return home.) I googled all the low carb food possibilities there. there is quite a lot. My plan is to be hungry when I get there, so i can have an early lunch and coffee. Then do a bit of walking to acquaint myself with the place, for a few hours. Then a final cup of Joe & I will do my 15 minutes with the 1 armed bandit in the casino that is closest to the bus garage (I think that is the CASINO OF THE EARTH). My sneakers fell apart. I will have to find some crazy glue to put them together, or I cannot work out. I have a similar pair at home, but i never wore them before. i hope they will fit, at least for the hour i am there. Tonight I have to be elsewhere, so no workout till the morrow. I have 1/2 dozen different liquids on my work desk. I will not go thirsty to be sure. Today is weigh-in. i am not apprehensive. As i screwed the pooch the week before, i am not expecting any miracles. But my pants ARE noticeably looser. FF

After spending 10 hours yesterday painting kitchen walls and inside cupboards, plus hauling stuff from inside cupboards to the basement, I was beat last night and sore. This morning I did a Pilates DVD that helped stretch things out.

i made a decision re: sardines (gagging reflex)

as long as i am going to have them no more than once a week, i suppose i can get them with the soybean oil. After all, i am just going to eat the sardines, not the oil it came in. If i can find them in a better oil, or even fry them in grapeseed oil to mitigate the effect of a gram of soybean oil, so much the better. I make a big deal over soybeen oil, only because it is not good for thyroid issues (those who have them). i suppose a gram or two a week, will not stunt my growth. No more on the subject of sardines, i promise. FF

Well the kids left today about 8 am. The car had to have a new coil, spark plug and something else to the tune of $400.00. DD says, well the car is paid for and that is like a car payment that I don't have anymore. She and the 16 year old will be doing the two days of driving as SIL had to fly home Monday for a meeting. I will be glad when they are home safe and sound.

FF, I have a can of sardines in cupboard packed in olive oil so maybe you can find some at the Shoprite. Not sure if we are allowed to name brands but it is a town in Maine that starts with Bru . The $13.00 chinese bus sounds good. I bet it is air conditioned too. Good luck on the 31st! I went on a snow bird bus from the resort I worked at in Alabama to the casinos in Biloxi once. I had only $50 to play and won $75 on the quarter slots so was thrilled.

Vicki, painting walls and ceilings, climbing up and down ladders is great exercise and you will have a nice fresh kitchen when you are done. How satisfying is that!

Bec, so sorry you have been fighting an eye infection. Hope it is all cleared up now. Also, sometimes "chocolate" happens. We just have to get it out of the house and stock up on low carb snacks to get us over the cravings for sweet. You can do it!

Tony, hope the new batteries in your scales are good to you. Enjoy the pool the next few days. They are going to be rough ones!

Marilee, maintaining is a very healthy way to stablize your weight. I have been up and down so many pounds over the years my body doesn't know if I am coming or going.

Will weigh in morning to see the damage done the last 10 days.

thanks Abi...-

-win or lose, i will have a great time. The only perspiration will be from walking a few hours, if at all. For the 15 minutes I am engaged, i play the dollar machine. So, if i win something, it won't be mere chump change. When i go to the bank on Thursdays, i go across to McD afterwards, get my food and go home. I just decided about 10 minutes ago, that i will walk to the diner from the bank(about 15 minute walk), have dinner there, and walk home (making sure i have some cold water to drink). There are benches all throughout Ocean Pkwy, so that i can sit down if necessary. I expect that by the time I finish dinner, it will have cooled down, at least to below 90 (hopefully). I am in a red meat or a pork chop mood. FF

ff, thanks for your casino itinerary...i think i'm about 2 1/2 hours away from mohegan - went to a matchbox 20 concert there once - if i'm around and you don't mind, i might just take a drive...we may be away on that date, but if not...

vicki, if you were sore, you did some good - nice job!...

abi, i look at my car repairs the same way your daughter does - a car payment is like a monthly, major repair...they'll get back fine, but i know how much you all will miss each other...i haven't seen my daughter for 8 days and i'm dying good luck with the weigh-in!...

marilee, it kinda means ya screwed up...lol...

had a good day today...ate very little during the day and had some steak tonight - not much, as i'm just not hungry...spent most of the afternoon in the pool...

my scale batteries were not dead - the scale was!...but i got on the mechanical scale and it read 213, so whew!!!...i can tell you i was afraid to climb on it!...

Gibby, i got that expression from the movie...

THE RIGHT STUFF, which I recommend. It was about NASA's MERCURY PROGRAM-the 1st 7 astronauts. it just means 'erred very much'. TONY, if u can let me know about 3 days prior to July 31, i can tell u exactly where to meet me, although i think I know already. At least for the sake of meeting, it can be at the Seasons Buffet (#15 on the Mohegan Sun map at or near the Casino of the Earth).Yesterday, up until 7pm, all I had eaten was a 5 oz can of tuna with some mayo (3 T), and at 3pm, 1/2 of a low carb pita. At 7 pm, the dam broke loose, and i consumed the following: 1 lb sliced roast beef (sliced thick). Shortly after that, i attacked the 8 oz Hebrew Nat'l Salami (4 gr total carb) with deli mustard. Oh, and 6 celery sticks. You would think that would be enough, would'nt you. But like a lion on the prowl, i needed more. So at well post curfew time (10PM)I called the chinese take-out place for a large order of ribs (no sauce)and a small order of shrimp and broccoli (ATKINS-ized). Well, finally satiety took hold of me. Total carbs for the day was 12-13 gr. But i sure wish I could be happy with half that much. I think i can wait till lunch to eat today. i have a small pack of nova smoked salmon. I will get an ind portion of cream cheese at our cafe, and scoot over to the cafeteria for some salad fixins;, then stuff the lot of it into 1/2 low carb pita. No doubt i will total it within a couple of minutes. SIGH! I sure hope today is the hottest day of the year. I AM GETTING IN MY PLAIN WATER TO BE SURE, in addition to the other zero to very low carb beveridges i consume. Major caveat. The carbs vary widely with different brands of smoked salmon. Mine is 1 gr for the whole 3 oz pack. FF

ff, sounds good...since we are on here every day, we'll have no problem keeping in touch...

as for the eating last night, we all have days/nights like that...sometimes i think it's our body simply wanting more and sometimes i think it's just us needing to feel like we can eat whatever we want if we really want it - a need to feel like we have control...no real harm done, and probably some psychological benefit...

it's gonna be a day in the pool for me!

just finished lunch.

the hamburger line was negligible, soi i got 2 pill sized cheeseburgers (swiss cheese) to augment my nova salmon. it was a 3 oz pack, so i still have for Monday. This will tide me over till i get home after the gym. I seem to be doing not too badly with the heat, but i would prefer minus 20 degrees over this. Not cooking (owing to the heat)is putting the kibosh on my liquid assets. How about a cold snap for a week or thirty? Anyway, i have a very busy weekend planned. gonna burn lots of calories. FF

i got home about 8:35pm. i sat outside till 9:45pm.

I will be drinking my dinner. I think I set my own personal record with plain H2O(over 100 oz). Also, coffee, and seltzer, and crystal ice (the red flavor). and the last of my Faygo choc soda. Looks like I will have to get more tomorrow. Before I go into B&N tomorrow a.m., I will look for a diner to have a really big breakfast. If anyone deserves it, it is I. I will have, later that day, my lc gelato, an 1 lc sesame cookie and wash it down with a large iced coffee. By the time the caffeine enters my bloodstream, I will be beginning my workout. It will be interesting to see if I look any different by Sept 23 (the birthday of the God Augustus). Some things I have to take on faith. Goodnight y'all. Have a great and cool night. FF
