QOTD - ON weeks 2-6 is it possible to make Fridays D days? We go out with friends alot on friday nights (pizza, mexican, etc) and I'd love to make this work for our limited social life. And if it's possible to shift the days, what would the rest of my week look like? Here's plan:

week 2
MTWTHSS
CCBBCDB

week 3-6
BCDBCDB

TIA

Has anyone tried sticking with the low-glycemic carbs on carb-up day? I wondered because I read that high-glycemic carbs are rapidly converted to glucose by the body. The glucose dissolves in the bloodstream, spiking the glucose level and giving that "sugar-high". After the glucose level spikes, it quickly disappears from the bloodstream, leaving the body starved of energy and looking for more fuel. The "high" followed by the rapid drain can leave the body feeling sluggish and hungry. Low-glycemic foods break down in your digestive system at a slow, steady rate, making you feel full longer and preventing the "spike/drain/eat sugar or high GI carb/spike/drain/eat sugar or high GI carb" cycle. (GI is glycemic index)

I thought that was pretty interesting. I wonder what Wendy would have to say about that and whether or not it is effective with her plan. Maybe that's why I didn't suffer any lethargy or hunger Saturday with my carb-up day. I chose mostly low-glycemic carbs. (with the exception of the terra chips, which tasted OH SO GOOD!)

That just made my day, so just to confirm, I'd do:

week 2
MTWTHSS
CCBCDBB

week 3-6
BCDCDBB

Does that make sense to have 3 B's in a row (Sat/Sun/Mon)??

Thank you for clarifying

Hey Kelly,

I think I am doing OK although it's a weird day. As you know, I messed up with my breakfast by eating raisin-cinn EZ bread. I had a LATE breakfast (9 am). Then I had a shake around 11:45 and then around 1:45 I was trying to have my lunch but had absolutely NO appetite. So I stopped and figured I'll run some errands and then have my chicken salad. Came back and had my salad around 4 (with very little appetite). Now I am going to have my dinner around 7:30 pm. Can't believe I don't want to eat at all.

How are you doing?

Guess what! A daily glass of wine (red is recommended) looks like a go. Have it with food, because food slows down the absorption of alcohol and minimizes its impact (metabolizes slower). It's listed as an average glycemic index food (neither high nor low, but moderation is recommended.) So drink that wine!

Now for the bad news. Beer, on the other hand, has an exceptionally high GI rating due to its malt content. Here personal discretion will dictate how much anyone drinks.

(The book I am checking is "Living the GI Diet" by Rick Gallop.)
Julie

Unfortunately, I can't drink either due to the medication I take for heart palpitations! Darn!

It's so hard to eat. It's the benefits of carb deplete - WOOHOO I'm glad I stuck it out and held my ground. I had alot of opportunities to blow it, but I didn't.

I've been thinking about that cinnamon raisin french toast all day. I have to go back and reread, but can we have it on a B day or only on D day?

I've not had much of an appetite since mid last week. Today, I too had a late breakfast (10:30 toast with 2 eggs), lunch around 1:30 (salad with chicken) and I'm drinking my shake now. We are having fish for dinner with broccoli and another veggie (maybe mushrooms) and I was shocked to see that snack tonight is lettuce/turkey/cheese wrap.

WE CAN DO THIS!

Hmmm, why doesn't the profile picture show up? Am I doing something wrong? Or does the picture have to be reviewed and approved by invisible sources before it will post? Sometimes technology totally frustrates me!

Thanks, Kelley. I like it because I miss my daughter, and I plan on spending time on this message board because the support and the people are wonderful. I'll be able to see her picture all the time! (And remember the warmth of San Antonio as it gets ready to snow here!

Kelley17 wrote that we can do that cinn-raisin on both baseline and carb-up. I am on my way to heat up a crabcake and make myself a salad with TOMATOES and mushrooms.

counted as a carb. Try to save it for carb up or at least baseline days. If it's not fat free, count it as a fat also.

I've seen a lot of questions about PB. It is a fat. Limit to 1 T. I have a hard time with that one!

I just had a thought. Next Tuesday is my knee surgery. I can't eat or drink anything past midnight on Monday, and my surgery is not until 1:00 in the afternoon on Tuesday. (I'll be SOOOOOO hungry and thirsty!) After surgery, I'll be in recovery for a few hours, and then home (outpatient). Tuesday is a carb-down day, but it will be practically a no-food day for me. If I can eat dinner (depending on the effects of the anesthesia), what kind of meal should I have to try to stay on plan? Then Wednesday is a carb-up day. I'll be on the couch icing and elevating my knee for about 3 days with very little activity, so should I follow the plan with just one carb-up meal at the end of the day, like Wendy suggests if you're not exercising?

Any suggestions?

Julie

If I can eat dinner (depending on the effects of the anesthesia), what kind of meal should I have to try to stay on plan? Then Wednesday is a carb-up day. I'll be on the couch icing and elevating my knee for about 3 days with very little activity, so should I follow the plan with just one carb-up meal at the end of the day, like Wendy suggests if you're not exercising?

Any suggestions?

Hi Julie!

I'll chime in on this one...but this is my guess based on my understanding of the program...and how I worked it when I was sick.

What time are you back from surgery? If it is before 5pm (I know it says 3pm...but there have been a few times I was late with a carb on a day...no big deal as long as we don't make a practice of it) and you are feeling up to it, I would have a meal with a "clean carb"...it is what I call them (not the starchy variety you know!). See how you feel in the evening...eat another meal...you might be surprised and actually have an appetite. I make a broccoli or cauliflower soup with bouillon and steamed broccoli (which I then puree with my cuisinart blend stick) and chunks of chicken...if your feeling like you need 'soup' fare...it may be a good option.

Take Wednesday like your regular carb up...you may want the extra calories from the previous day's shortfall. Great idea planning ahead...but give yourself some wiggle room, you may need it with that necesary fast before surgery. I do suggest drinking plenty of water as soon as you are able to.

Hope this helps.

Julie your day of surgery is a carb down day, and although you are unable to eat most of the day, I think you should try and stick to the plan for dinner, and perhaps another meal at least 2 hours before bed. You can do your carb day with the last meal meal being the carb up, and then try to continue the week on your regular plan and you should be fine. A lot of us did not do much exercise during the first few weeks. (Not Alissa, she is super exercise woman, and Kelly was doing her Callanetics).

I hope this helps. I am sure Alissa and Kelley will chime in with their thoughts too.

Good luck with the surgery.
