Thanks...

To all of you...I have 2 beautiful daughters. I have another friend who will start "Crackin" on Monday. That makes 5 friends doing this. One of my friends doctor asked what she was doing and he took down the info to pass on to other patients. My boss has lost 18 lbs in 6 weeks. His dr wanted to know what diet he was on too. Way to go Wendy Chant. Even though I cheated on the cruise, my clothes still fit. Not tight like I thought they would be. This is the life!

Chili Cook Off at the American Red Cross Today

Hi, all. We had a chili cook off at work today, and a chocolate contest. I was so good. I had one ladle of chili with beans (no pasta), no crackers, no chips and I didn't even nibble on one of the chocolates and they had all kinds.

They do this every Halloween. It was good chili, but I stayed in my plan. It was a great feeling to DECIDE not to participate instead of just blindly eating everything in sight!!!!!

Thanks, Alissa! I'm working on growing young so I can be just like you, a running maniac!!!! I used to be a runner. I ran 8 miles every day until I had a back injury. I would love to run again, but I'll never do 8 miles every day again.

Dear Jackie...

Let me tell you what a miracle it is that I can run today. Briefly so as to not hijack the thread too much On April 4, 2004 my youngest DD and I (she was 18 months at the time) were in a near fatal car accident. She was in a coma and still has residuals related to her Traumatic Brain Injury (though she does amazingly well and far better ...and better all the time... than they originally predicted) and I broke my neck in 3 places (I actually crushed C5,C6 and C7) and dislocated my spinal column at C6 (it was literally "S" shaped there in the MRIs they are amazing and quite shocking to look at today in hindsight)...no one (meaning docs) could believe that I had feeling below the waist. Through the traction and surgeries that first night...no one knew how I would fare and if my column could be "re-positioned" without damage. Well, I am a walking...scratch that...running machine now. After 6 months of wearing an Aspen body/collar I was cleared to resume to "light" aerobic activity. Within a year I was fit again, however not able to run due to the impact in my neck (I have all kinds of Titanium hardware in my neck...bars, screws and wires). This past September, I decided to TRY running...maybe I could do it if I trained my body how to handle the impacts. The C25K program, a good eating program, SOME OF THE GREATEST SUPPORT INAGINABLE...Kelley, Connie, Sara, Tam and Renee that was for you!...and a great fitness coach to teach me proper form and look at me! My Neurosurgeon is always amazed at what I am accomplishing...he always says..."Alissa, have you seen your MRI? You should not be walking today." [on a side note...It is kind of funny, because he always shows his students my MRIs before I go in for a check up or something...then asks them for prognosis......funny because then he intorduces me and they are all shocked 'cause I can walk ] Well, I am guessing The All Mighty Father in Heaven had a different plan for me Thank you Jesus.

The long and short of it...I CAN RUN!! I love the feeling...everyday when I wake up and can WALK and MOVE is a joyous event and such a gift. If it has never been "taken away from you" or "almost gone" maybe...just maybe...that simple act of putting one foot in front of the other gets taken for granted. Movement is a beautiful thing

I am delighted to share my LOVE of running and history...if only one person makes a decision to do it... YAY. Get out there and MOVE You will never look back and wish you Ran less, Walked less, Jumped less...Never...of this I am certain Once the ability is gone...if it ever is...I don't want to look back and wish I had...wish I had...because I CAN and I AM doing it...RUNNING. Amazingly enough completely pain free as well

Happy Day Sorry to take up so much "me" time

Love to all!!

You can do it...a little at a time! The C25K program is the best...

Check it out!

It is the most fun I have ever had working out! I have NEVER been a runner...not even when I was younger...team sports like Softball and Volleyball but NEVER running. My sis, who was a runner, is amazed that I am loving it so much now as I would never go running with her when we were younger!

p.s. Thanks for listening to my earlier post...sorry to get so wrapped up in my own story

Thank you everyone for your kind words and encouragement.

Connie, I still need to lose some weight. Had lost down to 145 lbs. and kept it off for 2 yrs. - and then the dreaded "carb creep" showed up. I haven't lost that much "weight" on this program because I wasn't totally committed the first time around. That's why I grabbed size 12's. This time I've been more faithful and will continue at least throught the holidays. Plus I love coming here and keeping up with all my cracker friends.

Tam, right now we are 6 hrs. earlier than EST, but that will change this weekend and we'll be 5 hours after daylight savings. Don't let the scales get to you - keep trying on clothes that didn't fit before - the scale IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!!!!

Alissa your story is amazing. You had made a couple of comments before about your daughter being in an accident, etc. but I have not known the entire story. You truly are superwoman and an inspiration to all of us. God definitely has special plans for you.

Love you,

Sara

Thanks Sara, you words are very special to me.

My friends are always telling me that I never once complained about the pain, never really spoke about my injury...just focused on Megan. Indeed, other than to show others IT CAN BE DONE, I tend to keep my story to myself. Well, and for The A-HA moment with God...but that is the other part of the story If the adversity we experience can be a hope, inspiration, guide, help, poke, prod, kick in the pants or support to another...THAT is the gift and the real value.

I am blessed to call you friend

Love you,

~Alissa

I've no doubt God has special plans for us all

Alissa: What a truly inspiring story. Gave me goose bumps. April 2004 was quite a month. My father drowned on April 17, 2004 and my 11-year old nephew pulled him from the bottom of the pond, swam with him to the bank and began to work on him (he learned a few CPR things in his 4th grade health class). My father responded and is alive today. He spent 4 1/2 weeks in a drug-induced coma because of lung bacteria, but he made it! That is why I am such an advocate of CPR training and why I teach it so passionately.

I will run again some day, I just meant that I wouldn't run 8 miles every day, simply because when I did that it was because I was being obsessive/compulsive about it. If I didn't run 8 miles I really got down on myself, but I do plan to run again. Ken and I work out in a gym right now and use the treadmill and machines.

I am so glad that things have worked out they way they have for you and so happy that your little one is improving also. We will keep her in our prayers.

Question: Can you have low-fat fudgsicles on carb down days too or just baseline and carb up?

Baseline and carb up...so sorry...I know I am having a hankering for one now BUT you can blend a vanilla Atkins Shake with a 1/4 tsp rum extract with 4 ice cubes then top it with a generous shake of nutmeg OH MY LORD...YUMMY concoction courtesy of Kelley

Similarly, the chocolate ones are really good with some instant espresso blended in them...yum and it hits the chocolate spot too

Yeah. 4/4/04...that year is was Palm Sunday...our accident happened at 5:04 pm...odd how I remember that detail. Interestingly enough, there were "bystanders" who witnessed the whole thing...they came running over to my car. I was on top of Megan...we were both thrown sideways through the window. The lifted me off of her, cause she could not breath (or so they thought). With my injury, it is nothing short of a miracle that they did not sever the cord (or pierce it in some was as it was severely dislocated near the crushed bones.) There are no coincidences. I am a believer.

I am glad your Dad is ok...what a story your nephew has there! WOW!

Regarding running...one step at a time...and you leave a bit of fat behind in each step

Jackie,
I eat mine on ANY day. Book says that they are a FF. They are a COMPLEMENT to a meal on any day, can be used as a MEAL 6 (snack) only on baseline days.

Hi all,
I have a question. Tomorrow is my carb up day, but we are celebrating my sister's birthday Sunday and I want that to be my carb up day. How do I change my plan to accommodate that?

Julie: I think I saw that Kelley said to do a Carb Down day before, so Saturday would be a carb down and Sunday your carb up then.

Yes, I believe Monday would be Week 3 day 1 as normal. That's what I would do anyway. You're just switching up those two days only.

jkvetter...yes I would love to. If Crescent would cook.

Alissa... Amazing!

I think those of us who come through miraculous events really appreciate what we can do (compared to what science tells us we should be able to do).

I was diagnosed with cancer 6 years ago. A Sarcoma. Doctors messed up the surgery. Long story short, they took half of my right hamstring, half of the quadricep, and the entire membrane surrounding it.

I should be dead. I should have an amputated leg. But here I am...

Every breath I take is a miracle.

Every step I take is a miracle.

No one can tell me otherwise.

I feel like my walks/runs are celebrations of worship, and it sure makes a difference from how I used to feel about my daily workouts to now.

Thank you. My Monday starts Week 4 Day1, but it is the same as Week 3 Day 1.

That's right, Julie. You are a week ahead of me. Sorry!

Just go forward to Week 4 Day 1!
