jkvetter and other scale addicts

jkvetter...I so hear you and this is a hard mental transition.

Just let me tell you and KELLEY can back me up. I, seriously, wanted to bag the program at 3/4 weeks because I still ONLY showed the 10# loss from week one. I was bouncing up and down in the weight area and was so annoyed. I tracked all my calories and was regularly under 1500...closer to 1300 on most days (bear in mind that I burn upwards of 600 calories a day with cardio and weights near 6 times a week). I was so frustrated, I asked Kelley for some help (knowing her success on this program and high exercise similar to my own) and she actually recommended I eat MORE! So, I started eating more and bagged tracking all my calories (I had been using sparkpeople). I started losing again...just a little bit at a time...but losing...then gaining...then I shrank so much I was floored...I was literally losing my pants while running at my gym. Now, after my fit test...yes down nicely 15# (see only 5 more that after that first week) and the inches down...those are the numbers that floor me. 16.5 inches. You see the scale is only ONE measure of progress...there are so many more things we could look at to gauge progress. I call them Non-Scale Victories (NSVs). Making a better food choice, clothes fitting looser, getting a compliment, noticing yourself in the mirror different, clothes getting too big...on and on...so PLEASE keep making the mental shift AWAY from the scale.

Kelley got me to look beyond the scale (ok, I had to do it myself, she just helped get me to realize it ), even though I knew my body was shrinking...dang it the scale was not cooperating. It will, it will, give it time and keep doing the program...you WILL loose and you WILL shrink when you work the program. If we remind you all to skip the weighing and look to other measures of success it is because we have been there and know that success will happen you just need to give it time.

OK...lecture over...I only do it cause I care about y'all

Salad dressing on the go....
In a small container, I put light salt, fresh ground pepper, garlic powder, celery seed, and some splenda. At salad time in a restuarant, I sprinkle this dry mix over my salad and then sprinkle with my small amount of olive oil and liberal vinegar, taste it and adjust amounts accordingly. I often eat my cottage cheese at dinner and put it right on top of my salad....nummy!

By the way...food for thought...pun intended:

YOU DID NOT PUT THE WEIGHT ON OVERNIGHT and YOU WON'T LOSE IT OVERNIGHT!

BUT!!

YOU WILL LOSE IT and YOU WILL SHRINK!

How do I shrink and not loose on the scale?

I'm reposting this...it is from the FAQ section:
"One pound of muscle and one pound of fat are NOT the same size.

If I place one pound of muscle on a scale and one pound of fat on a scale, they will both weigh one pound. The difference is in total volume. One pound of muscle may appear to be the size of baseball; one pound of fat will be three times the size and look like a squiggly bowl of Jell-O.

Why is it that we can lose sizes, yet the scale remains the same? Because muscle weighs more than fat...

Muscle is a denser tissue and thus takes up less room than an equal weight of fat. That's why it's possible to lose inches but show no changes in scale weight. Having more muscle means you have a more desirable body composition, or fat-to-muscle ratio. You may still weigh the same, but your body will look different, smaller, better and tighter. Though it may take you a few weeks to see measurable changes, you begin to put on muscle and burn calories from the moment you start exercising.

The muscle weight you gain also beefs up your metabolism which in turn, helps you to burn off more fat. Talk about a win-win situation! (You won't jiggle as much at your ideal weight, either.)"

Greek Yogurt

Did those of you asking about this see Jerri's response??

She said it is a carb(starch) for baseline and carb up days...NOT for carb down days. If it has no sugar, that is. If it has fat, then you count it as a fat too.

NSV!!! THUTT is no longer a THUTT...I now have a Butt and Thigh that are differentiated by a nice curve

For those of you who don't know what a THUTT is...you probably don't have one It is when your Butt and Thigh become one where they meet...you know...indistinguishable because they are soo voluminous like a straight line down...or rather a bowing curve out encompassing both

Thanks Kelley

I know I posted the logic behind the large early loss and how we "re-gain" it (replenishing glycogen stores) but continue to lose fat...can't find where I put it...I'm going to go searching!

Post your fat versus muscle in the FAQ thread...it is powerful!! I LOVE IT...and have never forgotten your kind and encouraging words that week when I was so frustrated. I am here still because you inspired me and encouraged me Thanks friend!

Thanks Alissa - I'm here because of all of you. I know one reason I've been so successful is because I have my own cheer squad and I don't want to let you down!

OMG - I just saw this recipe posted and had to share:

Heat an oven to 275
1 bag of frozen green beans put in large zip lock and then drizzle EVOO over and sprinkle salt in. Zip and Shake. Pour out onto and foil lined baking sheet and bake until crispy. The people on the thread were raving about the green bean fries!

There was a debate about the temp anywhere from 275 - 350 so play with and see.

Well, let me just emphasize what Kelley, Alissa and Cricket said several (make that numerous) times today:
MUSCLE WEIGHS THE SAME AS FAT BUT
MUSCLE TAKES UP LESS SPACE!!!!!!
Please look at the photo in posts 339 and 388 and, oh yea, post 430, then print that photo out and post it by your computer!

That is why you may not see a big number drop on the scale but a big number drop in clothes size!

Comprendo?

Jackie - when I read your lunch success, I went right to the bottom of your post so I could quote you:
"Moving toward health by taking my own responsibility". Congrats on another step forward in moving towards your health goal!

Kellibell, I say go for this quiche anytime!

Alissa, my friend! Every day you never cease to amaze me! I mean that sincerely! God Bless ya girl!

Pick on me, pick on me as long as it is educational! If I thought you were picking on me to be mean, that would be a different story. I think I know differently.

WOWZERS! Lots of info flying through the world wide web! I have been so much more on track this time, I think the first 8 weeks were just practice for me. Many of you think of things to ask that never occurred to me - duh! Thanks for all the info. Posting my menus has really helped me. I don't want to post a flub, so it keeps me from cheating. I will weigh tomorrow and hope to have new stats, but if not, no biggie. Alissa, found the Light Bernstein's dressing - only 1.5 grams of fat per serving - Awesome. Having done Atkins in the past, my biggest issue is watching the I don't get too many bad fat grams. So, purchased the mayo with olive oil, light Laughing Cow cheese, and this dressing. Much better choices. It's only 3:00 pm here in Hawaii so I'm still at work and thinking about dinner and working out! Later Crackers - you rock!

Kelley, for some reason I keep wanting to put you in Arizona - wishful thinking that you are closer (physically) to me and Alissa! I keep thinking we can meet in the middle here in California one of these ol' days.

Low Carb Hawaii, glad it is going well for you! Question please? What happens when we change to daylight savings time? Do you drop back an hour also? Thought I read that Hawaii is not on DST, but am unsure. Just planning for November! Mahalo!

Connie
