Wendy Chant Code Crackers Week of 20 October 2008
Welcome to the Code Cracker Challenge Board!!!
Please look over the next few posts for helpful links and suggestions! This is a continuation of the Wendy Chant “Crack the Fat-Loss Code” WOE Challenge Board! Please refer to prior challenge threads and the Other Diets board for general diet information and pick up the book, "Crack the Fat-Loss Code" for full diet information, guidelines, cycling schedules, sample menus, menu logs and more! Whether you are just starting with the Cycle 1, Week 1 Carb Deplete or you are somewhere along the way, jump on in!! There are people at all levels of the Wendy Chant Way in here. This is a great group of helpful people who will be a great resource and support group for you. Remember to weigh and measure yourself or select a pair of slacks to judge your losses by – you can choose whether you want to report your stats to the group or not … up to you … but you definitely need a measure of your progress. Since we have so many levels, it's helpful when you ask questions or claim braggin' rights, if you mention in your postings what cycle, week and day you are on! Especially since the first weeks do have some restrictions that the latter weeks don’t. Be sure to post tips and such too – especially if you’ve already been doing CTFLC for awhile now! And don't forget to share your menus! That is helpful for others, but also a good measure for others to help you should you encounter any problems yourself! This is the place to share your weight loss successes, your personal story, your mistakes, grab some support, give some support ... whatever it is. We're here for you and each other. It really is a great group Sooooo, how 'bout we get Crackin'?! LET'S DO THIS!!!

The Challenge
This challenge is based on the 8-week program from "Crack the Fat Loss Code" by Wendy Chant. This challenge is open to any and all “Code Crackers” who are at any Cycle, any Week of the CTFLC program, whether it’s Cycle 1, Week 1 or Cycle 4, Week 8 or somewhere in between, and to those who are curious to watch and learn.
In brief, the 8 week program is divided into four cycles. Cycle 1: Carb-Deplete Cycle – WEEK 1 This is the toughest week! For 7 days you will be restricting certain foods – mostly carbs – in order to manipulate the glycogen stored in the muscle. During this cycle you’ll be shutting off the body’s dependence on sugar and also teach it where to find the fat stores for energy! This week you will be counting carbs very closely so your veggies are somewhat limited and fats are more focused on the good fats. But, if you carefully follow the cycle you will never have to count carbs again! Cycle 2: Macro-Patterning Cycle – WEEKS 2-4 Now you’ll move into what is called the Macro-Patterning Cycle. This is where you begin to slowly re-introduce carbs into your life, teaching the body to burn fat while slowing down the adaptive response. During week 2, you will begin to bring most of the foods that you consume regularly back into your daily meals. You will see less rigidity in the meal plans—and more substitutions. For best results, it is recommended that you continue to abstain from alcohol on carb-up days during Week 2. During Week 3, you will have two carb-up days, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. After this week is the best time to add in sweets and alcohol on your carb-up days. *There are 3 kinds of days in Cycle 2. Baseline Days This is where you are teaching your body to adapt. You will be taking in the basic nutrients your body needs through proteins, you’ll take in good fats, but you’ll be adding in one starchy food at two different meals in your day, so long as you eat them before 3:00 p.m. Carb-Down Days These are days where you will have a more minimal starch intake to force your body to use fat as an energy source. One these days you will still get your fats from good fat sources, and you will consume one starch before 3:00 p.m. Carb-Up Days This is where you will increase your starches to stoke the metabolic rate and give the body what it needs for repair and growth. Your last 2 meals on this day will be primarily carbs! Yes, you can splurge on those usual forbidden foods – bread, desserts, pizza and even alcohol. We call these days Food Passes and you have two of them a week, typically on Wednesdays and Sundays, but the beauty of this plan is that you can adjust these Carb Up Days as needed for special occasions, making it very convenient and totally interchangeable. Cycle 3: Accelerated Fat-Loss Cycle – WEEKS 5 & 6 For the 3rd cycle, you will begin to pick up the pace! You will continue to follow the same types of days that you did with the Macro-Patterning Cycle, but you will change how they are cycled in order to increase the body’s use of fat stores. Cycle 4: Maintenance Cycle – WEEKS 7 & 8 The 4th cycle is all about teaching your body to reset back to a higher nutrient profile in favor of carbohydrates and fats. During this cycle you will get 2 new days – a cheat day where you can have any food you like – including any carbs you’ve missed, and you’ll also get a High-Carb Day where you have clean starches all throughout your day. If you have made your goal by this week, you will use this cycle to maintain. If you seek to continue your weight loss, you will restart your program at Cycle 2. Let's get crackin'!!! |

This, that, and some holiday eating advice....
Good morning, Alissa!
WOW! I wouldn't even try to do that thread business! You sound great- and I envy you that running- I have a treadmill staring me in the face in the bedroom, and no excuses!! Since I feel I am perpetually running a treadmill here, I guess that's my "excuse"- maybe after the holidays. Got up too early- couldn't sleep- too much on my mind.... and too much to do today- so I will just say hello, and go off to the kitchen.... Had a rough evening yesterday- a run-in with one of the kids.... so after 4hours of sleep, and this too busy day today, just gave up and got up... ![]() Bright side of it is,I didn't react by eating, which is very empowering. I know that stress or emotional eating will just make things worse- this is the first time I can actually practice what I knew all along. I would rather be upset and hungry now, than stuffed and self-loathing. And --yesterday I wore a jacket that afew months ago I couldn't even wear open without looking like a sausage, and now I can wear it closed- and it's not even close fitting. Didn't even feel my skirt-(It was sooo snug before I started)- clothes are so much more comfortable now!!! My DD liked it, and asked if it's new (no- 2.5 years, but I couldn't wear it!)- DDILS liked it too, but nobody said a word about weight loss- my DSisterIL kind of looked me up and down after hugging me hello when they came over, but didn't say a word. Didn't expect it from her, so that's OK. (Just sat and watched her down 3 chunks of cheesecake....) As I once said- the kids just accept me the way I am, and weightloss is just not on their mind, (besides my DD, who after 4 births looks great, and really works at it...) - they are all thin- afew "underweight" - but so healthy and eating healthily that I don't push....but at least my DH keeps telling me how proud he is of me, and the sanity and xtra energy I've had is the best payoff!!! Eating's still "under control"- had carbs only at the big holiday meal, and even then- didn't stuff- YAY!! ![]() , but after finishing at 4PM, at 10 I was starved, so I had my shake, a small banana (no big Chiquitas here- oh how I miss them!!) and a small piece of chocolate tart with a cup of decaf. I was worried it would turn into a mini binge, but I just went off to bed with my Ipod...I see this is the best way to control holiday eating- eat carbs only at the big meal itself- and then eat what you want- no guilt!!! If you must have an extra treat , save it for the end of the day- and put it into a mini-meal. And, keep drinking water the whole day- it's easy to forget when your schedule its thrown off!!!I do have less meals these days (about 4), as the holiday meal is long and large ![]() but the eating is under control, and no grazing!!!. Imagine it, ladies- you can do Thanksgiving without gaining an ounce!!!I think this can work for Halloween also- save the stuff you want, have a shake, and then just enjoy and savor it all at once-like a meal. Of course, preferably on a carb-up day!!! The intake will be smaller than if you spread it out all day! Just carb-down the other meals if you see it's a really large amount, but have it after some protein!! If it's straight sugar- have some fat with your shake (try flaxseed). We usually don't see candy as a meal, but if you do, you will eat much less, and the "sugar hit" will be much less, lowering the chance of a binge later on. Hope this helps someone!! BTW- the box of chocolate is still sitting unopened a week later in a bag on my night-table. ![]() ![]() I'll eat it------ another time!!!Can't I ever shut up??? ![]() ![]() This is the last holiday- that's it- tomorrow night it's over!!! (Just in time to get ready for the Sabbath ![]() ). Can't wait to see what happens when I get back to the regular schedule- I suspect the scale will drop (there's definitely some "hydrate" hiding along with those carbs I ate).Question- do I repeat week 5 next week to get a good accelerated fat loss, or just go on to 6th and maintenance? I am too impatient to lose.... ![]() ![]() |

FIRST OF ALL A BIG THANKS TO MY FRIEND AND LB, ALISSA, FOR DOING THIS WEEK'S THREAD! HIP-HIP-HOORAY!!!!!
![]() Tell me how to do it and I can help out next couple of weeks - 'kay?Alissa, can you tell Dede if she should count the one minute muffin as a fat or protein? Haven't done them so I just don't know. TAM ! Before I look at your note and make comments, I would like to know why/wherefore there are so many holidays for you at this time of year? Any special reason, or just how it is? Thanks, Teach!Tam, that seems so unusual for you to get into it with one of your kids. I hope and that it was just a minor misunderstanding and things are quickly made up. And that is so good that you can recognize that the emotional reaction of eating just doesn't work. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Clothes you've been waiting to wear and enjoy wearing for 2 1/2 years - they fit!!!!!! Hubby knows and you know so that is the best! You already know the rest aren't likely to say anything.About that box of chocolate, there is always tomorrow or the day after or the day after or..... ![]() As for what week to be on . ... Maybe Kelley, Renee, Alissa have an opinion. Or maybe you want to join some of the rest of us doing the 4 day carb down and then go to week 2 day 5?????Quote:

Kim – I eat the minute muffin 5 days week and as of yet (I will be starting my 7th week) I am not sick of them. It reminds me of bread pudding. I put 1oz or half and half on mine. mmmmm
Jody and Meatpea good for you for quitting smoking. Everyone in my family smoked but me, I was lucky, I was allergic. I have just seen them all struggle so much but they have all quit but my younger sister and she has tried many times. One day she will succeed. Pamella – the Atkins shakes really are delicious. I like vanilla but just cause i am not a chocaholic. Chocolate is delicious too though. Haven't tried strawberry but just cause i can't seem to get it at the store i shop at. Linda & Dede - wow, that is my goal too, 150lbs or at least that is my second goal. My first one is 32lbs so that I can get out of obese for BMI and into overweight. Then another 30lbs so that I can be the weight I was when I got married. It seems so far away but I will do it, one pound at a time. Good luck to you. Kellycarbaddict – YOU CAN DO IT! For me, it seemed like a slow start but one day turns into another and another and before I knew it, I am at the end of my 6th week. Connie – thanks for the info on the flourless sprouted bread. I did find some but wasn’t sure if i could use it instead of EZ bread. Wendy – I don’t actually like the carb up days too much cause once I start I have a hard time stopping. So, today was my carb up day (I am one day off from everyone else cause I started late) and I tried to eat most of my carbs with my supper meal so I am not craving them all day. If I start the day with a carb, I want them ALL day long! Alissa – isn’t it funny how we miss someone when they don’t post for even just one day! Do you do the C25k every day? Or do you do other running as well. Good idea to post your grocery list. Glad you had a good night out and good job with the new thread. Jody - This support group is what keeps me from eating or wanting to eat. I get on and read and respond in place of eating. It has been working pretty good for me so far. Jody, I have a 20 year old son living a home and he better not dare bring his girl home as he has a 12 and 14 year old sister still living here! I’m with you on the NOT! Melissa – hope you feel better. Nothing better than chicken soup when you are sick. Lynda04 – Great job on your weight loss! Dede – my recipe for minute muffin did not have butter in it. Mine is 1 egg, 2 tbsp milled flax seed (has a bit of a nutty flavor), 1 pkg splenda and some cinnamon. So, I can have my anytime, any day for a meal or a snack. Onexone – just try to get back on track. I try not to have anything in the house I might cheat with, that includes candy, chocolate, chips, cake, donuts and I my family is being supportive of my efforts and besides, it doesn’t hurt them not to have junk food anyway. My dd14 has complained that “there is nothing to eat in this house”. I tell her to check the fruit bowl but she says “that isn’t what I want” which means she wants chips! Linda (Gemini) – this has been what has kept me going and making me want to keep trying. People are so positive and so helpful with everything. I think you will like it. Tam – that is something I have noticed with myself, I have had some stress in the last 7 weeks but I have not reacted by eating. I wonder why that is? That is why I have given up on every other diet I have tried, but not this one. hmmmm . . . not sure why that is . . .

One Min Muffins??
OK, Ladies...I have no idea on this except to say that 4 TBS of ground flax has 140 cals with 10 g fat and 6 g protein and 12 g carbs (6 fiber so that would need to be netted out in week 1 for a count of 6 carbs). Hmmm...interesting. I think it could be counted as a good fat...obviously...and 1/2 serving of protein.
Any others with an opinion on this?? I have not made nor eaten these apparently tasty treats.Sorry I am not more help on this issue...maybe Kelley or Renee can chime in???? Last edited by free to be me; 10-20-2008 at 12:12 AM.. |

Kate: I don't run every day. Most days and I am on week 6 day 2...I was supposed to do it today but an unfortunate exchange with my ex left me unsettled...I think that is a story for a different support group!!! I will be doing it tomorrow. I do, however, get some exercise each day. I do step aerobics on Wed nights, Thursday mornings and Friday evenings...some Frid eves. I like to run on Sat-Sun-Tues-Fri just based on my work out schedule. Good for you getting going on the program...you will have loads of energy as you move through the program!
Glad you are joining us in the quest!! |

The success of KNOWING what triggers us to eat and having those physical cravings taken out of the mix sure makes it easier to make better decisions...YAY for getting there!!YAY!! Again...for the better fitting clothes! Remember, I stagnated at 191-190 for several weeks (like 4) before dipping last week. All the while I was shrinking the liar of a scale was just not responding yet! Loose clothes is a better gauge of success and progress ![]() As for the rest of the game...Weeks 5 and 6 are both the accelerated fat loss weeks. Maintenance starts with week 7. So, not sure what you are asking...if you are on week 5 and you feel you over did it a day or two, I say just do a few carb down days and pick your week up as normal. if a craving hits or you feel out of whack...then reassess! JMHO ![]() Thanks for the kudos on the running...I am enjoying it oh so much! ![]() |

THAT takes some time...So Kell...what do you say??? Is there a quicker way to post the thread...I have to load each link and cut/paste it...maybe I am just making it harder than it shoudl be ![]() KELLEY!! Missing you!! I hope you had a FABULOSO weekend with the girlfriend(s) and family!!! Everyone else!!! |

kate's minute muffin recipe
Thanks Kate for the healthier recipe. I was thinking that a whole tbsp of butter was probably not the best idea. That should change it to a good fat as well,(as Alissa pointed out). Will change it to none and eat whenever I want.

trouble sleeping/ Starting day one week 2 today!
Has (or did),anyone have trouble sleeping during week one? The last few nights it's been hard. It's 4:15 am and I have been awake since 3! Finally just got out of bed and came downstairs. Had trouble getting to sleep last night as well. And dreams have been kind've crazy. Didn't know if that has been a problem for anyone else. Maybe it's just lots on my mind.
Looking forward to my oatmeal this morning. dede |

Disappointing weigh in today, up .2 pounds from 321.8 last week to 322 this morning. I feel smaller though...which I'd have taken my measurements. Tonight I'll try on my "measuring pants" to see if they feel any better. Not giving up though! That's the first time I've gone a week without being on the scales, it was actually good even though the outcome was not so good! Happy Monday to everyone! On to week 3!

Week 2 Day 1
Good Morning Ladies,
I am moving on to week 2 and have had a fantastic weight loss last week. 12 pounds! Whoo-Hoo. ![]() QUOTE] I am down 7 pounds! Cool beans. I had a pita pocket for breakfast with egg and turkey sausage as my carb. The pita looked kinda carb nuetral with the fiber. But I'll count it as a carb. Woo hooo! I haven't lost anything in ages, so I'm happy. Now on to week 2 and adding the carbs back in. Wendy |

Just wanted to say hi!!! Was pretty busy this weekend. My nephew15 had his homecoming so I got to go down and take pics...He looked so handsome. His mother died last year so I do what I can, for those 2 boys have been thru so much. I enjoy being there for them.....Of course yesterday was Redskins game...I didn't have snacks, we started out going to breakfast and then had a mexican pizza, then had chicken salad and then fudgsicle....so wasn't to bad.
I had a alright day yesterday, I know I ate somethings I shouldn't have, but today is another day...starting week 3 and plan to stick to the WOE. Itried to weigh this am but my scale still needs new batteries. Clothes are fitting better. Way to go Lynda on losing 14lbs ![]() ![]() The post over the weekend was way busy....I read thru most, so again another day.....keep up all the good work.....

You say you feel smaller and that's what counts right now. How did your pants feel and fit? There are so many "other" ways to judge than just the scale. Keep up the hard work and it is working. ![]()

Hello! So you are starting week 3 then? Congratulations for doing two weeks--the hard part is over. As for the weigh-in: this is not a plan where weight comes off predictably week after week after week. It just doesn't happen that way and don't expect it to. Plus, if you are like me, and you can retain water like a sponge (that's me), move your "official weigh-in day" to the Tuesday or the Wednesday morning of the new week. I always need a day or two extra to get rid of the water weight from carb-up day. And 0.2lbs is about 3oz. And that is under a 1/2 of a cup of fluid. Go and look at that and you'll see it's nothing. DON'T GET DEPRESSED ABOUT A NUMBER ON A SCALE! Glad you have measuring pants.. get a measuring shirt too! And maybe a belt as well... this program often doesn't show the scale go down and yet you are hiking your pants up with one hand to keep them from falling off. Keep going. The scale eventually catches up. You're doing great. |

Week 2 Day 1
Good Morning Everyone!
I was up at 5 this morning worrying about today. I made my 1/2 cup of oatmeal and then came to read the bulletin. My daughter came to tell me the oatmeal is getting cold. I told her I'm scared to weigh and I'm scared to eat that oatmeal. I've been very confident and not hungry once I don't want to mess with that. The only thing is we are going to hit the gym this morning and I know I need that extra energy. Anyway..........I bit the bullet and I lost 10lbs! ![]() Whew, what a relief. I will eat the oatmeal, which seems all our favorites and work out the rest. I'm great in the gym so I'm sure the added food will help with that. Mellisa thanks for the beginning of this thread, it's really going to help the ones starting today and I'm going to go through them all just to see what I've missed. This is very helpful and I will also be happy to help learn how to start a new thread so you don't have to do all the work. New ladies, you are going to have such and eye opening week of what you can do with a little help from your friends. Week 2 group, oh yeah we did it! Let's work hard on this next week and out do anyone who's ever did a week 2, keep us honest and on track ladies who already know what this will take. Hey, we can do it! Off to eat that oatmeal and cook chicken for the week! Hugs Everyone! ![]() Linda |

Specifics about carbs and fats after week 1
Quote:
Be careful about the pita. This is from Wendy's book and are the ONLY acceptable carbs we can have unless it's a carb up day or a cheat day and these are the recommended amounts as well... now some of us do "tweak" the program here and there but if you do then understand that you may "tweak" yourself out of the weightloss as well ... Note there is no white flour on this list. Type S Starchy Carbohydrate Requirements and Substitutions • Consume only the following starchy carbs and in the specified amounts. Black or red beans; lentils (½ cup cooked) Oatmeal (½ cup dry measure) Cream of Rice or Wheat (1 serving per package label) Ezekiel bread—flourless bread or millet bread (2 slices) Grits (1 serving per package label) Potato, any kind (½ medium, 1 small, or 6–8 ounces) Rice (½ cup cooked) • On carb-down days, consume one starch with a protein before 3:00 p.m. • On baseline days, consume two starches with a protein before 3:00 p.m. Also on week 2 and beyond we no longer count carbs, we count fat. This is not a low carb program. Don't go over 20gr of saturated fat per day from here on in... Specifically here's what she says: Type O Fat Requirements and Substitutions • Consume one serving of the following “A” fats one to two times daily. Canola oil Essential fatty acid supplement Flaxseed oil Olive oil • Minimize “B” (bad) fats to under 20 grams per day. These are saturated or nonbeneficial fats. Butter Cheese Fatty red meat Mayonnaise Salad dressing • Limit the amount of fat you eat at meals containing starchy carbs Hope I don't sound like I am picking on you, I don't mean to. I just don't want to see you throw yourself off when you've got such a great start and everyone gets confused about the counting carbs vs. counting fat... Please try not to be discouraged, scales, I'm sure some skinny man at the factory jinx's them just for fun! Also if you were exercising maybe you gained muscle and that will make you gain. but those loose pants tell you other wise.
Keep on track and let us encourage you, you have a whole crowd of people rooting for you. |

Week 2 Day 1
As I posted before I don't think I am off to a good start:
I made the power oats with protein powder and I could only eat 1/2 of it because I kept gagging. So should I of eaten something else or do I had 1/2 a carb to lunch or just go on?Also on the salad for lunch and dinner can I substitute a cup of a veg. instead. I don't know if I can eat another salad for a day or two. So we count fat this week. On the list of things that we can eat like the meat we don't count that right just the bad fats? Sorry I know you have probably already said this somewhere. I don't know why this week seems so hard to get in my head. Also yesterday morning which was my week 1 day 7 I weighted 194.8 and this morning I weighed 195.0 but I also had a visit from TOM so could that be why? Thanks so much for the help!! ![]() Kim

Tam – Am I correct in thinking you made a dirty little joke???? You naughty girl. Sounds like you are doing great and sounds like there is some jealousy issues with your fat loss??? What a great job you are doing making it through those holiday meals and going to bed with your ipod instead of that box of chocolates!
Love the old clothes coming out. My coteacher keeps asking me where are you getting all these new clothes? Not new, just haven’t been able to where them in a really long time! Hi Ya Connie! I think 4 carb down days and then restart week 2 sounds like a plan. Alissa – sounds good to me for the One Minute Muffins. Thanks for starting the thread! I haven’t even begun to read all the posts on the last one – I think over 8 pages! Will try to get to it later. AS for the posting. I cut and paste and then get to the dreaded links and have to do each one individually – pain in the a**! Dede – Hi and Welcome! I slept like a baby the first week and beyond. You may just have a lot going on in your life right now??? Enjoy week 2 and your oatmeal, make sure to get a protein with that, lots of people love the strawberry protein shake in their oatmeal. Kydanae – Love your new Avatar! Yep egg popovers are fine for week 1, you may want to go easy on the salsa though (count the carbs and sugar) Pat – Am I going to have to come and steal your scale – REMEMBER the scale is NOT your FRIEND, stay away from the scale. You are GAINING Lean Muscle which in turn BURNS MORE FAT! If you have to get on the scale I suggest weighing your self every Wed morning – far enough away from carb up day and is usually pretty consistent. I’ve lost 1 – 2 lbs most weeks, gained 1-3 lbs some, and lost 4 lbs some for a total of of 25 lbs lost. Have faith in the program and it will work. Do not become obsessed with the scale. I’m wearing loose 10s and can fit into my 8s (tight, but fit) and I weight 150 at 5’2’’! Jody – you must have your protein, NOT can, MUST! Got to keep you satisfied and those fat burners fired up! Kim – Go for the ½ serving at lunch. I like the crepes just make sure to use only ¼ cup of oats, and make them very thin or else they get rubbery. I add banana extract and cinnamon and nutmeg – yummy! Wendy – Was the pita pocket EZ? If not, not really legal for your carb down or baseline days. Remember this is not a LOW Carb diet. We are learning to eat the right carbs. It is all about the types of carbs. The EZ products are made from sprouted grain NOT flour. Wendy tells you to stay away from all those low carb foods. Rhonda – Hi ya! I think it is great your scale is out of batteries, now you can’t obsess and actually enjoy your clothes being looser! Hello to all my fellow Crackers and all the newbies that joined us over the weekend. I missed you all and haven’t gotten a chance to read all the posts from last week. I had a very nice weekend. I did break down and have 2 glasses of red wine with my girlfriend on Friday night. Then Sat my cousin threw me a Surprise 4oth bday party – It was great. Loved it. All the people I LOVE were there. Then Sunday I woke up feeling awful. And no, not from too much wine, I think I had/have the flu body aches, no appetite, fever, chills. I feel better today, but not 100%
