WOE: Living Life as a Cracker ;)
Start Date: August 24, 2008
Wendy Chant Code Crackers Week of 6 October 2008

Welcome to the Code Cracker Challenge Board!!!

This is a continuation of the Wendy Chant “Crack the Fat-Loss Code” WOE Challenge Board! Please refer to prior challenge threads and the Other Diets board for general diet information and pick up the book, "Crack the Fat-Loss Code" for full diet information, guidelines, cycling schedules, sample menus, menu logs and more!

Whether you are just starting with the Cycle 1, Week 1 Carb Deplete or you are somewhere along the way, jump on in!! There are people at all levels of the Wendy Chant Way in here. This is a great group of helpful people who will be a great resource and support group for you.

Remember to weigh and measure yourself or select a pair of slacks to judge your losses by – you can choose whether you want to report your stats to the group or not … up to you … but you definitely need a measure of your progress.

Since we have so many levels, it's helpful when you ask questions or claim braggin' rights, if you mention in your postings what cycle, week and day you are on! Especially since the first weeks do have some restrictions that the latter weeks don’t.

Be sure to post tips and such too – especially if you’ve already been doing CTFLC for awhile now! And don't forget to share your menus! That is helpful for others, but also a good measure for others to help you should you encounter any problems yourself!

This is the place to share your weight loss successes, your personal story, your mistakes, grab some support, give some support ... whatever it is. We're here for you and each other. It really is a great group
Sooooo, how 'bout we get Crackin'?! LET'S DO THIS!!!

The Challenge

The Challenge
This challenge is based on the 8-week program from "Crack the Fat Loss Code" by Wendy Chant. This challenge is open to any and all “Code Crackers” who are at any Cycle, any Week of the CTFLC program, whether it’s Cycle 1, Week 1 or Cycle 4, Week 8 or somewhere in between, and to those who are curious to watch and learn.

In brief, the 8 week program is divided into four cycles.

Cycle 1: Carb-Deplete Cycle – WEEK 1

This is the toughest week! For 7 days you will be restricting certain foods – mostly carbs – in order to manipulate the glycogen stored in the muscle. During this cycle you’ll be shutting off the body’s dependence on sugar and also teach it where to find the fat stores for energy! This week you will be counting carbs very closely so your veggies are somewhat limited and fats are more focused on the good fats. But, if you carefully follow the cycle you will never have to count carbs again!

Cycle 2: Macro-Patterning Cycle – WEEKS 2-4

Now you’ll move into what is called the Macro-Patterning Cycle. This is where you begin to slowly re-introduce carbs into your life, teaching the body to burn fat while slowing down the adaptive response. During week 2, you will begin to bring most of the foods that you consume regularly back into your daily meals. You will see less rigidity in the meal plans—and more substitutions. For best results, it is recommended that you continue to abstain from alcohol on carb-up days during Week 2. During Week 3, you will have two carb-up days, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. After this week is the best time to add in sweets and alcohol on your carb-up days.

*There are 3 kinds of days in Cycle 2.

Baseline Days

This is where you are teaching your body to adapt. You will be taking in the basic nutrients your body needs through proteins, you’ll take in good fats, but you’ll be adding in one starchy food at two different meals in your day, so long as you eat them before 3:00 p.m.

Carb-Down Days

These are days where you will have a more minimal starch intake to force your body to use fat as an energy source. One these days you will still get your fats from good fat sources, and you will consume one starch before 3:00 p.m.

Carb-Up Days

This is where you will increase your starches to stoke the metabolic rate and give the body what it needs for repair and growth. Your last 2 meals on this day will be primarily carbs! Yes, you can splurge on those usual forbidden foods – bread, desserts, pizza and even alcohol. We call these days Food Passes and you have two of them a week, typically on Wednesdays and Sundays, but the beauty of this plan is that you can adjust these Carb Up Days as needed for special occasions, making it very convenient and totally interchangeable.

Cycle 3: Accelerated Fat-Loss Cycle – WEEKS 5 & 6

For the 3rd cycle, you will begin to pick up the pace! You will continue to follow the same types of days that you did with the Macro-Patterning Cycle, but you will change how they are cycled in order to increase the body’s use of fat stores.

Cycle 4: Maintenance Cycle – WEEKS 7 & 8

The 4th cycle is all about teaching your body to reset back to a higher nutrient profile in favor of carbohydrates and fats. During this cycle you will get 2 new days – a cheat day where you can have any food you like – including any carbs you’ve missed, and you’ll also get a High-Carb Day where you have clean starches all throughout your day. If you have made your goal by this week, you will use this cycle to maintain. If you seek to continue your weight loss, you will restart your program at Cycle 2.

Let's get crackin'!!!

Oh Yeah, Connie, I so know that she is moving on and developing in the hormone department. The facial features she dishes me are the most obvious signs...and she goes from laughing to being angry to crying in a nanosecond. As I said, it is hard not to laugh...but I do suppress it. Her brother, on the other hand, has not been as restrained in his observations of her recent "kooky" behaviors (his words).

God, He indeed does work in mysterious ways. I love you ladies and I have never met you...my world is broader and better for all your presence. Tam, I love how you live your faith...it is a beautiful, beautiful thing. I have finally learned, as a Christian, that the only way to believe is to live it daily. I do it in different ways then you...none the less...I am awed and enriched by the examples you set forth.

Kelley...UHm...you will laugh...I wanted a *different* flavor in my chocolate Atkins shake this evening...so I added some peppermint extract. Uhm...you know...it only takes a few drops... I added a teaspoon! It was like breathing pure mint! I guess I had to learn that lesson

Molly, you can have 2 slices of EZ bread...or split it up like Connie suggested. As long as you keep it to 1 clean starch...in any combination you want! This is a very flexible WOE! Don't be afraid to add your carbs!

Thank you for being so candid. We need more of it in the world. It would be so much easier for us all , and help us understand each other.
You are right- you are in a difficult position- kind of stuck between two religions.
As an Orthodox Jew, I was taught that G-d does not turn any of us away when we turn to him. As we are also told to emulate G-d, as we are "made in his image" we are to live under this rule ourselves.
Belief in Jesus as the Messiah does not correlate with Jewish belief, and neither does baptism- but does not put you in the status of a person not born Jewish, and your son is part of this unclear status.
The pain you are experiancing is universal. When we have to live with the ignorance and "attitudes" of those around us, it is a very hard and lonely road. I have a close relative that became "non-religious" for years, after being hurt by those who lived as Orthodox, but caused emotional pain to others. He rejected Judaism, saying that if they could behave like that, he wanted no part of it. Only when he matured, and realized that religion was between him and G-d, and the true way of living was to follow G-d, he was freed from the pain he had suffered, and could return to his religious life, and a rich relationship with G-d. To put it short- if others don't live properly, it doesn't negate the religion itself- it just means, simply, that they are making a mistake. The Torah was given to us all , and nothing anyone says or does to us can take it away from us.
In fact, G-d does not accept repentance between people unless we first ask forgiveness from those we hurt.
As far as how Orthodox Jewry sees your and your son's true status , I would ask an Orthodox Rabbi that is an expert in conversion.
You may be interested in a site called aish.com . It's a storehouse of broadminded information, and through it you can find non-judgemental information and contacts to clarify issues.
I personally have known many of the people involved for the past 30 years, and you will not find the narrow minded perspective you are concerned about.

I totally agree!!! People have told me "You aren't like "other" Jews/Orthodox/Ultra Orthodox or whaterver" I ask them- how well to you know these "other" ones??? It's all a question of ignorance and disrespect.

As long as your DD feels you love her unconditionaly, and that you yourself went through this tumultous and confusing time, she will be fine- look hopw great you turned out.
As for living faith- We believe that the Bible is a "book of instructions" for how to live our lives. The same way you would never use an appliance, DVD player, etc. without reading the brochure first... Since we believ G-d made the world, what better place to get instructions how to live in it?
It's never failed , and has gotten me through many a difficult time. I don't surmise to alway know what He wants from me, but asking myself "what does G-d want from me now" has helped me stay centered in difficult times.
Thanks so much for your kind words!!!

Here is what I said.

Hi everyone. Boy am I out of the loop. I haven't been checking in here much, but was still on this WOE. Anyone here from 1x1 She was on the same days as me? Lots of new names....and many old ones gone I guess. Anyway, I finished the 8 weeks. I yo-yo'd a bit between -13 lbs and -16 lbs. Strayed a bit the last 2 weeks, but mostly stayed true to the program I think.

Anyway, for anyone starting out.......I'm here to say it does work My dh and I talked it over and because we both have a lot more to lose we are going to repeat the last 7 weeks. So here we go for another ride I feel more in control this time, and am not so worried about feeling deprived. Heck the last week of maintenace I forgot I was on Baseline and did one carb down day I didn't need to. Didn't realize until the next day LOL.

So I guess Monday I will be on Day 1 Week 9 (doesn't seem possible

So....I just reposted what i said over there. Does that make sense? I think I'll just go to bed.

Happyartist - glad to hear from you and happy to know this WOE is still working for you and your husband. Lot of the older crackers are still around, just don't post as much as they used to. Mary Mc has gone off plan for now and is doing her own thing - too much stress with hurricanes and then her husband had a cancer scare which thankfully turned out ok, but is still coming by to check in when she can, and plans to return. Renee (Mrs. Daisy) is still around, but her Mom is currently on a cruise; so is Lisa (Lovewins), though she does not post very often. And others to like Linda and Jeanne, summer was not so busy so people had more time to post, especially the teachers. so there are still quite a few of us old timers around.

Hope you get a chance to post more often, especially any hints you have for all of us!

Connie

P.S. figured that's what you meant!

Good Night Connie!

My little Megan has 2 doctor's appointments tomorrow (nothing big...just our SOP Peds and Ped Neurologist quarterly appt) HOPEFULLY we won't have to do a level check...one of her meds needs to be monitored, I think we're good for another 6 weeks but they sometimes spring that on me! Eeks...she DOES NOT like needles (uhm nor do I like watching them go in my DD...or having to hold her down to accomplish the feat).

I start maintenance tomorrow. I understand how others felt...I'M NOT DONE LOSING!! ALAS, I will follow the program and trust the cycling will continue to work it's magic. 10# in 6 complete weeks is still such a great start!

See ya' tomorrow!

Happy new week to all y'all ladies!

Good Morning

I am staring week 4! Does anyone know where edamame beans fit in to the diet. I have been eating them at lunch somedays as a substitue for a starch. They have so much protein I was thinking I could have them at night?

I may end up emailing Wendy.

Thanks,

Lisa

That was exactly my grandmother and grandfather's struggle - they experienced the rejection and snobbery of their local community (several women came and told them - my family who escaped the holocaust, served G-d flawlessly, and served faithfully - not to come to another service unless they could dress their children 'properly'. My grandparents gave my father one of the most expensive Bar Mitzvahs South Florida had ever seen, wrote a scathing letter of reply, and stepped away from punlic Jewish life for about 40 years. My grandmother stepped away from her faith entirely.).

Your kind words have literally brought tears to my eyes. Thank you soooo much.

I will definitely look into the website.

happyartist, 13-16 pounds in 8 weeks sounds fantastic to me. I've decided that as long as I can average 8 pounds every 8 weeks, I will stay with the program. I enjoy all I can eat so much on this plan that I'm not in a big hurry to get to goal. In the past, I've lost lots of weight, only to regain it because I was so sick of the plan once I reached goal, I went right back to my old way of eating. Naturally, the pounds slowly came right back on.

Molly, I did KK last year too and took off 50 pounds very fast, then could not lose anymore, even on 600 calories a day. Talk about messing up your metabolism. The nice thing about this plan is that we are teaching our bodies to burn more fat and still get to eat in a way that allows us to live in the real world.

Just want to say thanks to who ever mentioned the grits with cheese and hot sauce. Tried it and fell in love. I've always liked grits but have eaten it either with cinnamon, sweetener and a little milk or just a little butter. Cheese and hot sauce is so much better! Only problems was I ate 2 servings. Today is a B day, so guess I'll just count that as both my carbs for the day.

Susan

Connie - saw your post on previous thread too and agree with all of it.
I believe God puts what we need in our path and it is our choice to take it or not.

Alissa - WoW I just noticed I was spelling your name wrong lately - Duh! Sorry I have a very good friend who spells their name with a Y. Sorry. Your poor daughter. She is probably so confused and doesn't understand those hormonal surges. Be gentle and patient (I'm sure you are though)

I too think Tam's faith is unbelievable. Now that I have children my fait is becoming deeper to me and I'm searching for my own way and peace through God. So many of the moms and teachers at my son's school just seem so happy and comfortable in their own skin and I know much of it is due to their relationship with God.

Alissa- I bet you have wonderful breath for a few days So funny! I love those extracts a little goes a long way!

Wonder if he'll recognize you in a month, LOL! By then he'll think you sent a daughter....

I totally agree!!! People have told me "You aren't like "other" Jews/Orthodox/Ultra Orthodox or whaterver" I ask them- how well to you know these "other" ones??? It's all a question of ignorance and disrespect.

My one and only SIL has 6 sisters who spoiled him rotten, (and 3 brothers...) his father treats his mom like a queen, all of which have made him a lady lover. Treats my daughter like gold!!

Other than terrible sleep deprivation I am doing great. My son and newest DDIL dropped in last night and kept me company while I cooked, and of course raided the fridge. I LOVE it! All this cooking and preparing makes for great family time, which is what it's all about!!

Seeya guys- hope to have great news once I weigh in.... Today is a C day... I like those.

Tam - Thank you for the Bday Wishes. I love reading your posts - what a great mom/grandmom/mominlaw/wife you are! I love that you are so happy when you are cooking for your family. The kitchen truely is the heart of the home. Anytime we have family gatherings or even good friends over we all end up laughing in the kitchen. this! Sounds like your daughter is one lucky lady. Have a great week!

Lisa - I would email Wendy since they are soy and Wendy isn't a big fan of soy. Let us know what you hear.

Susan
Susan - MMMM - Grits with cheese and hot sauce. LOVE THEM. Save that sweet stuff for cream of wheat. Sometimes I make grits for my chili instead of rice or noodles - Yummy!

Your kind words have literally brought tears to my eyes. Thank you soooo much.

I will definitely look into the website.

Oh, my... what did they mean by "properly"? ?

This is TOOOO funny!! I was spelling it with an I, and then noticed that you were spelling it with a Y, and since you always know everything, I figured YOU were right, and switched.

Well, they were dressing in clothes from Sears, instead of Burdines.... essentially.

It was especially hard for my grandmother - her family came from very exalted social circles in the Old World. Her family left Spain rather than convert, and served in very high capacity in the Ottoman court - only fleeing to America because they knew the Varlık Vergisi (wealth tax) was about to be enacted. She never forgave the sting of the insult.

In other news:

Here are my w8(end) measurements (old followed by new):
AREA OLD MEASUREMENT NEW MEASUREMENT CHANGE
weight 173.5 175.6 +2.1
Chest 42 40 -2
Hip 44 43 -1
Waist 33 33 0
Arm 13.5 13.5 0
Calf 16 16.25 +.25

Total
Weight to date (End week 8): Lost 2.5 pounds
Inches: Lost .65 inches

Keep in mind I'm probably close to my TOM. And I had a bad period of cheating during weeks 6, 7, and 8.

Week 11 (4)

Morning girls!! I'm catching up from the weekend. Had a great day yesterday with tons of bargains found at the outlet mall. Fall/winter shopping is finally done for my DS8. Even got myself 2 pairs of pants - still a size 14 but in a non stretch material which fits just fine now. I always had to buy stretch cuz of my big ol' thighs UGH!! Now I can wear nice fitting cotton blend pants - YEA!!! I did 2 carb down days to make up for my Taco Bell blunder on Friday and the scale now shows no sign of weight gain YEA!!! Back to the normal BCDBCDB week. I'm gonna stay stright this week since I'm SOOOO close to the 160's now. Hopefully I'll get there by the end of the month.

Did my last run of week 3 C25K challenge. I'll "rest" for 2 days and start week 4 on Thursday. Um question - how long do ya'll wait before excercising after eating? I've been eating bfast at 7 am and then running by 8. Today I felt "heavy" after eating the crepes. My stomach felt too full and my running was harder than usual (but I still did it!). Should I not have so many carbs before excercising???

Thanks for talking about cheese grits ya'll!!! I was all set to make "pizza" for lunch, but now I'm dying for some hot sauce and grits - YUMMY!!!

Kelley and Alissa - Lovin' those sassy girls in the pics!!! Ya'll look FABULOUS!!! (don't you love that word?) I cut off all of my hair since having all this new found confidence. I'll have to take a new pic too. People keep telling me I look so much younger now - I'll take that!!! My BIL even said I could pass for a 25 y.o. (I'm really 33!) God bless him LOL!!!

Catch ya'll later cuz I'm starving!!! XOXO to all.............

Good morning all! (belated) Kelley! It's so beautiful here right now, I love this time of year! I have my pumpkin candles going, pumpkin scentports, and wallflowers as well. I am so ready for the holidays! Our high here today will be 90, so I am considering starting the C25K, but we'll be back to 97 by Wednesday .

Cheese and grits question- Are you talking about the cheese flavored grits, or do you add real cheese? I've never eaten grits with anything but butter, so this sounds odd to me, but I'm willing to try it! How much and what kind do you add?

Thanks Wildcat - Funny you saying 90 is good weather to run. I used to live in El Paso and have family in Ruidoso and Santa Fe. I love the dry heat you have, but still 90 and running Yuck!

I sprinkle cheese on my grits and add salsa to taste. I also love it plain with butter and salt. Yummy!
