Pulled pork rocks. I brine it 12 hours with pickling salt and molasses. Beats me how many carbs go in, probably less than a carb or two per serving, and it's worth it. 3/4 Cup molasses+ 12 oz pickling salt and 2 quarts of water. I use a big pot and put the butt in and cover with brine, weight it down and in the fridge for 12 hours. Rinse off, pat dry.

I cover it with rub (cumin, coriander, fennel, onion power, paprika, chili powder) and then put it uncovered in the oven to bake all day (on a rack in a foil lined sheet pan) Usually I do it at 225 for 12 hours, but I got up late today, so it's at 300 for 6ish hours. Lol. Makes a nice crust and keeps the inside super moist (especially with the brining the night before) Once it's super tender take out, wrap in foil and rest for an hour, then pull with forks. YUM-O. No sauce required.

I made the cole slaw with splenda this time (usually add 1/3 cup of sugar) so we'll see how that goes over.

Ed, after we had that MH, propane leak in the fridge fire, in May it has been out of commission. Now it's going into litigation between our insurance company and Jayco. Jayco claims it's an act of god even though we have owned it less than one year and it is still under warranty. We don't expect to get it back till late August or possibly Sept, Needless to say we are totally pissed and it has just about ruined the summer and now going into fall.

Doug holy crap, I didn't realize you had a fire. Was the fridge a Dometic? That would definatley piss me off. I think I would have some serious issuses with the dealer, Jayco and the fridge manufacter. I just got a recall notice and they put a bunch of new heat shields in and a new thermostat. Sounds like there having some issues. We don't really use the propane all that much usually just electric. But ours is a Dometic and its sounds like the same problem of a possible crack in a some line and causeing a fire hazard. Well glad your Ok.

Hey Wall, Ken, I think I'll go for that 100 push up deal I'll see what I can do tomorrow and post up what I did. Been a while since I did any pushups.

.

Ed, its a Norcold and there are no recalls outstanding on it. We had complained of a gas leak before the fire happened. We had a Dometic in the fiver that we traded in, but we had had the recall fixed on that.

100 push ups!!!!! I don't think so

Holy crap! Some big losers this week.

Looks like most of you losers are hitting the gym. I'll do the same.

Weigh in:

7/21 - 232
7/29 - 232

Been on vacation. Been eating out almost every night for the last week. Been making good choices, I've continued walking, and I have maintained. Going to head to northern Nebraska for a festival this weekend with my former college room mate. Should be a challenge!

Harley - I am not heading to Sturgis, but I may have the same problem staying on plan as you!

last time i went out to eat I stopped at a sandwich place. Jimmy Johns. Ever heard of it??

They have sandwichs that you can get sans bread, called an unwich. Its wrapped in a couple giant lettuce leaves. Freekin good. I had the VITO.

Calories in Jimmy John's #5 Vito Unwich With Cuke And Sprouts - Nutrition Facts, and Healthy Alternatives - The Daily Plate Calorie Counter

Nice loses this week fellas.

Alright, I know some guys here have motorcycles, so give me some feedback on my situation. When I was a kid I had dirt bikes and four wheelers, but I never rode any type of street bike. I am really starting to consider getting a cruiser style motorcycle. I already know how to get the permit and license, but am clueless on choicing a bike. Cost and reliability are big factors. What about size 750cc , 900cc or 1100cc? I will not have a passenger. I know every one is different, but how cold can it be to ride comfortably. Or what gear makes it more tollerable in the cold. I live near the NC/SC border and am trying to figure out if I can ride this thing all year. So, any info that would help some one just getting into this would be appreciated.

Lets see if I can answer all this.

1) All modern bikes are very reliable. Most newer bikes are fuel injected, only need oil changes every 3000 miles etc etc. If you end up getting an older bike the story can be much different.

2) The bigger the CC, the higher the cost. Also the newer the bike the higher the cost. However a new 2008 V-Star will run you about 6k. Pick up one thats a couple years old and you're still getting a nice bike at a bit lower cost.

3) Size. I always say go small and trade up. One reason is safety. The big bikes have A LOT of power and for a new rider its easy for it to get away from you. I know my 600cc has thrown me for a loop more than once. Also, smaller bikes tend to be more forgiving than the larger ones.

4) As far as gear goes is going to be how much you want to spend. I know people that have heated leather suits, and then people that wear winter Carharts. My suggestion; head over to motorcycle superstore (do a google search for it) and look at their gear. Really good prices and fast shipping.

Lastly, take the MSF course. Going from dirt to street is a whole new game. I've seen people ride a road bike like a dirt bike and they are just asking for trouble. The way you ride is completely different. If you cant get into a class, at least have someone that rides teach you initially.

I loved Jimmy Johns when I was up in Grand Forks. I'm kinda sad that there is only one in Seattle and its down town. Oh well, maybe if I wash outta ATC I'll open me up a chain of them.

Ed - Yeah, I've been going every year since 2002....It's always a great time and lots to see (think T & A). There's only going to be a couple of us riding out this year, but it is always an adventure. The first year, I went out by myself, just for the challenge of it. 14 hours on a bike is always a challenge, but that year I rode the whole way out in rain, hail and wind. Quite an experience.

I agree with CTI, but I would go a little bigger than a 750 given your size. I think you might be a little disappointed with the performance once you get used to riding again. I have a brother similar to your size that has a 50 Cubic Inch Boulevard (CTI- He's actually from Grand Forks) that rode out to Sturgis with us last year and was pretty disappointed in the performace in the hills. He seemed to keep up ok, but climbing some of the longer hills, couldn't quite keep the speed.

Ooba, CTI has pretty much covered it to a T. As to what gear to get I personally have a heavy leather jacket, leather chaps, warm gloves, and a neck warmer ( kinda like a knitted hat w/ no top that slides over your head and around your neck). Oh and I installed heated hand grips this spring. I've rode in 35 deg weather and let me tell you thats a little chilly. I can handle 45 deg all bundled up and thats cruiseing down the freeway @ 70mph butthats about my limit these days. Oh and don't forget about rain gear cause sooner or later you'll get caught in it.

100 Pushup inital test results

I did 40 so I rank @ 4. Should be interesting to see if we can achieve the 100 mark. I also just realized the last 2 weeks are definatly going to be a little tougher going from 5 levels up to 9. That should put a hurting on the old body.

Heres the link if anyone else is up to it.
one hundred push ups
Might be a good challenge for the next six weeks.

I'm in on the push-up challenge. I need to add more (any at all, to be accurate) upper body strength workouts to my exercsie. right now I get lots of cardio and core exercises, but nothing for upper body (other than swimming). I'll post my initial test results tonight. I imagine I'll give Wall a run for his money on the 7 proper pushups. No way I get anywhere near Ed the beast and his 40.

I'm pretty sure I accidentally had some form of sugar yesterday. I ate lunch at a mexican restaurant, and thought I did good by ordering Pollo Asada. Typically that would be grilled, marinated with lime, cumin, garlic, cliantro and other spices. Well, this version tasted like it had some sugar or molasses on it. It was a business lunch, so I chose not to send it back. Yet another reason to avoid eating out whenever possible.

hey big D - tonight I start week 1 day 1 of the 100PU challenge. actually instead of the 100 pushup challenge...for me it should be called "none to some"

harley - what do you pack for a week away on the motorcycle? Do you gear up much or just the clothes on your back??

ed - do you charge admission to that gun show?

Im also week 5 day 1 of C25k tonight...
I think I need to adj my schedule to do the 100PU opposite days.

Wall - I like to go in comfort (I look like a Gypsy driving down the road on my bike). I pack a huge tent, Colman Chair, 3 pillows, a Lumber Jack Cot, an air mattress, sleeping bag, extra pair of boots, rain gear, several changes of clothes, a soft sided cooler, shaving kit, etc.......I've been told that I should get a wide load sign on it. One thing to remember if anyone goes...EAR PLUGS!!!..you will need these to sleep!
Here are a couple pictures over the years of the bikes packed up before we leave...I will have to post some "after" pictures to show you what I look like after 2000+ miles of riding and caming out and partying for a week. If I remember, I will post pictures from last year....I had much more stuff.

My bike is the fatboy.

That's me on the left.

Nice bike Harley.

Thanks again for the bike info yesterday guys. As I am getting a feel for how much each make and model costs, I seem to notice for $800- $1000 more, you can always get some thing nicer. I guess you need to pick a price limit and just stick to it. It's a bit overwhelming.

One other question. Would it pay to wait till the fall to make the purchase since the bikes are in less demand in the winter, or with the price of gas, are bikes just going keep selling all year long?

Yes and no. Generally you will see a small dip in prices come winter time, however dealers know that come Spring people will want them, so no need to dump them out the door, unless you're looking at a new bike and the model year is changing.

Also, waiting till spring has its advantages. If you look at getting a new/old bike (ie a new 2008 but its old since it will be 2009) many manufactures will offer special financing or deals to get rid of them. Also come spring you will see a lot of financing options open up.

For instance mine is 99 bucks a month for the term of the loan, as long as I stay below the initial purchase price of the bike.
