Congratulations!

I stand by my suggestion to you (awhile back) to carb-cycle and/or zig-zag calories.
Thanks HB! I'm DEFINATELY zig-zagging the calories now... massively! I'm very very hopeful that I will be able to drop some pounds this way! (and I DO remember that suggestion way way back it looks like you were right)

380# today...up 2.6# from 377.4(12/1)...sigh...
It's been difficult, finding my way, the past 2mos.

Looks as if I show a 52.4# loss in 2008,
or just since I got my scale on 2/08(432.4).

That's not a lot, but it's something I can build on. I've learned a lot about LC healthy food choices this year at LCFriends. I'm grateful to have found this site.

Resolution for 2009? Better health. Better LC choices. Better portion control when making LC choices - still a battle for me, a final frontier, to eat as if I am nourishing cells by providing a few mouthfuls of protein-fat every few hours. Someday I hope to be able to nosh on LC snacks for nourishment, with no regrets for having eating too much at one sitting. My goal is to eat as a French person, tasting a variety of foods at each sitting in a few bites. Then to move more, as a healthy person aware of how moving aids digestion and improves muscle tone. More simple hourly activity!

And I am today grateful for the body parts that still work, even as I struggle with a hinky left hip/groin pain. OUCH!

Ilpirata, are we going to start a new thread for 2009? Lots of great info in this thread, of course. I'm aiming for a 2#/week average loss in 2009, having had a 1#/week average loss in 2008. Surely I can manage 2#/week at this weight!

Interesting thread on fertile eggs now available at Trader Joe's, for folks who like the idea of eating eggs from happy hens whose social life includes roosters and maybe a healthy variety of bugs, snails and random meaty things that add nutrition to an egg and make that yolk pure gold!

I think you should start it Zer! I'm not really following this WOE anymore... I'm now doing the Alternate Day Diet... but I'd love to use the thread to keep in touch with anyone. Although, this thread being a sticky and all perhaps just leave this one alive at the top of the challenges.

So what's the conclusion of eating to BMR? (After 68 pages of posts! ) Overall, how did everyone do on this long-term? Can folks report in?

I'll start.

While I had some initial weight loss in the first few days after I increased my calories to BMR, it did not turn out to be a consistent result for me. It's unclear whether the very few pounds lost initially was actually from the increased calories or the increased fat intake, as I had been on fairly low fat prior to the BMR experiment.

Anyone else want to sum up their experience?

P.S. My favorite part about BMR was getting to know Zer.

Aw, shucks... thank you... nice way to start the day, with warm words from a LC partner at LCFriends! Truth is, I had a real struggle to eat up to my BMR as often as it probably takes. I did get better at using FitDay, just to see how my fat was adding up. Astonishing how much fat it takes to get up to 70% and I got to plotting and finagling how much protein I could get into me as fast as I could shovel. Turns out sardines are a rich fatty protein. Lucky me, for I ate sardines during my carby years (mostly on Triscuits, which I do not now eat), so sardines and I are comfy with each other. I get mine by the case, now that Trader Joe's got undependable about stocking the filets in olive oil that I like.

As I check out my food diary, I see that my body seems to prefer a 48hr cycle that gives me a day of rest from stuffing myself to get up to my target ranges.

So I am kind of following Ilpirata to an Alternate-Day plan. I think that will fit my current situation, being not too mobile and not too active. As I take off a few more pounds - and my chiro works his magic on my hinky hip - I am hopeful that I can be more active. At that time, maybe... just maybe... I shall look again at eating up to my BMR each and every dang day. Maybe.

Well, ME TOO! And everyone else on this thread! Courntey, HB, Retro... so many other great ladies.

So here's my final analysis... Eating to BMR helped me succesfully break a 3 month stall. It definately has its merits especially for those of us who have chronically undereaten and yo yo'd in the past.

I was recently diagnosed hypo and know that is part of the reason losing weight is so difficult for me.

Ultimately though I stalled out again eating to BMR and have reached the conclusion that it is the SAMENESS of my day to day eating patterns that gets me into a rut. I believe I need MORE of an overall calorie deficit in order to lose weight. However, I still believe in the idea of getting close to an AVERAGE BMR for a week or a month as opposed to eating to BMR every single day. Thus my new WOE the alternate day diet which actually still gives me an AVERAGE calorie total of approx BMR. Its just not day after day after day of the same calories.

So, the idea has merit but ultimately daily BMR eating was NEVER going to get me to goal.

I didn't feel it was an effective way for me to generate fat loss. However, it was a satisfying level of food to consume.

This month I'm experimenting with dropping calories (1400-1600) and carbs (under 20) and decreasing my exercise (no HIIT/cardio, 2 strength training sessions per week, casual beach walking/swimming/yoga as fits into my schedule) - down from 5-6 days a week, 90 minutes a day, combo ST and cardio.

In 2008, I lost an average of 3/4 pound per week, which seems incredibly slow but I did hear one physician on a podcast indicate that 1/2 pound per week was a good pace for fat removal. My first thought was "at that rate I'll be at this FOREVER" but then I realized that I will INDEED be at this forever as LC is not a diet for me - it's the way I intend to eat for the rest of my life because of the SCIENCE and HEALTH aspect of it - not exclusively because of the fat loss. That made me feel better about my 2008 fat removal number.

Good for you Sybil! And I agree with you. 3/4 LBS a week of ACTUAL FAT REMOVAL (I love that phrase) is really really good. Keep it up Sister.

Good morning ladies - I have been AWOL as well.

I moved away from BMR eating because 1) I got tired of measuring/calculating everything and 2) some days I just don't want that much food. But it did help me see how much food I can and probably should eat in a day and that starving myself doesn't improve weightloss.

So, I'm back to eating one large meal and a small meal or even just a snack depending on how busy I am. But that's the way I've always eaten - I'm not much of an all day snacker and never have been. I'm just making sure that the meals I do eat are loaded with fat and plenty of calories - mostly meat and some fat - often cheese - and some veggies.

It seems to be working. I think I lost 36 pounds by the end of the year, which is slightly under 1.5 pounds a week since inception. That does include induction, so I'm figuring avg a pound a week, so I'm happy with that.

HERE'S TO A WONDERFUL 2009 FOR EVERYONE HERE!

If you guys start another thread for 2009, please include the link here somewhere. I'm going to try to get back here more often now that the holidays are over.

Very interesting thread.

My BMR is so low that eating to it isn't an issue. 1,193 calories a day. What fun it is being old and short.

I won't eat below that level because it turns into one of those horrible starvation diets and even with protein and fat it is NOT satistfying. My tummy is larger than my BMR and it gets empty at 800 calories!

Weighed myself today to see what a year of owning a scale adds up to, as contrasted to decades of NOT owning a scale and never really knowing what I weigh. For my money, owning a scale is a better way to live!

<== See my stats for a year's weight loss since I got my talking scale!
