Not sure HOW but I came in pretty darn good yesterday. Thats the way low end of my cals range... almost perfect on the carbs - I would like to hit 30 a day. I ate a HUNORMOUS lunch and then only had coffee with HWC for dinner... not bad all in all though.

One thing I forgot to mention about "The Thyroid Diet" book by Mary Shoman and I kind of agree with this is that she says to deduct 200 calories if you are hypo due to the slowing of the metabolism. I can agree with that but not the overall very low cal she recommends if nothing else works. I am not willing to starve myself and slow my metabo even further-I would rather be satisfied & healthy maintaining (at least that's what I'm doing now) than to ever do that to myself again.

Thanks Lisa. I really appreciate your input!

1733 is my absolute bottom BMR according to the calculators... no HB equation, no calorie deduction. I aim to not eat below 1700 cals. Aiming more at 1800 calories. Once my meds are titrated properly I will reasses. If I don't lose weight at 1700 then perhaps I will need to go to 1500?

Hey Kisha,

I'm so happy that you seem to be losing now since you have started your meds... Personally, I'm frustrated and at the point of giving up. I really don't know what else to do because I keep trying and nothing seems to work.... I have an appointment scheduled to see a doctor about it and am hoping that I get some answeres!

Congrats to you on your progress...

HI TJ,

yes... .SO GLAD you are going to the doctor. Please have him run a FULL THYROID Panel which is NOT JUST TSH. It should be TSH, FT3, FT4 at the least. He should also test for iron/ferritin and also TPO & TIP Antibodies. Not losing when eating right is NOT NORMAL! And it can be so frustrating and depressing. As you know I have been through TWO stalls that were each over three months... with only a ten pound loss in between the two. It was really important for me to just decide that NO MATTER WHAT I would not weigh more. NO MATTER what I would not give up. Even if I didn't lose a pound for a year I refused to gain. It helped keep me going but at the same time I was trying all different kinds of tweaks... lower calorie, higher calorie, lower fat, higher fat, no nuts, no dairy etc. etc. etc. ad nausium. I just wish I had gotten it together and gotten my thyroid completely tested sooner. Better late than never my friend and I'm glad you're adressing this NOW. HANG IN THERE!

Was ravenous at 4am, so had sardines. So nice to have them handy! I am probably going to find my way to the fridge, maybe thaw out some frozen salmon (with bacon-fatted greens and a mix of wild rice, 'shrooms, quinoa) for dinner, with liverwurst and HB eggs for lunch. That's the plan, if I get up and shuffling. If not, I have tuna and onions right here and am always happy to eat more fish!

Have not yet heard back from Ricardo (Dora's mechanic husband) on my car, that he picked up Monday, but D told me he saw signs of smogginess as he drove it back to his shop. No surprise, as it has been mostly sitting for months now without me driving it.

I sent R an email, listing what I have as a record of service over the past years - as far as brakes and such. I am thinking to ask him about a paint job, as the body looks pretty shabby and it's past time for a facelift on that 1989 Plymouth.

While I favor FIRE ENGINE RED with sparkles in the paint job, I think I'll go for a color that more nearly matches its original champagne (beige). What do you think?

Guess I'll tickle up my original email, in case it did not get there or got lost in the shuffle. Always a good idea to check a new email address for delivery!

Dora will drop off some groceries Friday morn, so I'll see her briefly then to ask about the car. Told her to tell R that there's no rush. I'm not driving, so why push for a fast turnaround. The smog certificate is due 12/14 or so, to complete the registration for next year and get a sticker on my license plate.

Oh, when I heard from my angel-helper Claudia (now in Florida with her son), she said gas was around $2/gal in the Miami area. She's looking for work and settling in, enjoying her son's Colombian GF who treats Claudia very well and is happy to take her places. C is VERY HAPPY!

Had a home visit Tues from NatDoc and her chiro son who did an assessment and has offered to do some PT on me, coming at lunchtime twice a week for 4wks to get me UP and MOVING - and to do some passive work on muscles that seem unresponsive. I think I may go for his offer, as it may help me get past a fear of falling that I have. I'm looking for my body to wake up and smell the coffee too, as I am taking weight off the joints. When shall I feel the difference, I wonder? When shall I move more lightly?

Both the NatDoc (nearly my age) and her son feel that I shall be able to recover good use of my legs and come in on my own steam to get treatments in their office soon.

That's awfully good news for me, at nearly 65.

HMO MD's offer to do a home visit this week has not yet materialized. Not even a call to ascertain my address. Typical. I'm not holding my breath on that, even if she manages to find her way here. HMO offers a single visit by a PTherapist who will lay out a plan of action but will not return.

I'll do better to pursue - and pay out cash for - a private PT program with my NatDoc's chiro son. These folks are really doing more than expected, with home visits and all. Good folks!

That could be a thought for future reference after your meds are optimized and nothing else is working. It could be several months for you though-unfortunately for all of us thyroid meds are not a "quick" fix and we have to give our bodies time to adjust.

I'm in it for the long haul. The weight certainly hasn't just *melted off* (nice fantasy). I know it takes time to get it right and I haven't even had my second round of blood tests yet. I'm excited that I'm in with a Top Docs Endo for my consultation on Dec Fourth. I have every faith that working with her I will get this situation handled and my WOE will again pay off. Nice to have a daily calorie reduction idea in my back pockett.

Yes that makes more sense to me and isn't as extreme as dropping to 1000 cals or less. My next endo appt is in Dec and hopefully we can make a decision about the thyroid nodules. I know I definitely want another FNA to rule out cancer and have decided on the radiated iodine treatment to burn out my thyroid instead of surgery. I will also insist he start treatment for the hormonal issues as I have finished the 6 month thyroid meds protocol he wanted to try first to try to shrink the nodules. I am sick and tired of being tired and feeling like a 90 year old woman-I don't care if I ever see another man nekkid and that's just not right at my age!!!

Well yeah! Plus... part of me suspects I brought this hyoPT on myself. By doing just that! Stillmans and fat fasting for months. Its when my hair started falling out! I just assumed that it was the low cals only not actual damage to my thyroid *sigh* thats one of the reasons this BMR means so much to me. Starving myself was one of the stupidest things I've ever done.

It sounds like you're ready for the next phase. I think taking this next step should help you feel alot better!

Hey everyone! I have a question. When you're keeping your calrories up and carbs down, how do you stay at or under 20? I'm having a really hard time this week and know I should be able to figure it out, but DUH!! I'm pulling a blonde moment here!

I should be eating around 2,100 cal/day.

Wed totals:
Calories: 1877
Fat 165g
Carbohydrate 26g
Dietary Fiber 10g
Protein 78g

Thurs totals:
Calories 2054
Fat 161g
Carbohydrate 43g
Dietary Fiber 13g
Protein 71g

Today so far:
calories: 493
Fat 35g
Carbs 7g
fiber 1g
protein 15g

Thanks!

It's tricky. Cutting carbs out at a couple of meals seems to be how it's done, how some stay at or below 5% carbs. With a couple of meals that are fat-protein (such as sardines), a meal with some vegie carbs falls into place without inflating carbs. As you look at a menu, note the carby stuff that you can cut out. All the little carbs add up fast.

I admit that I love raw onions and pay a carby price for indulging in them. It's worth it, for me, to conserve carbs so that I can enjoy the bite and crunch of raw onion in my fishy dishes. When I add balsamic vinegar to my sardines, I know that I'm adding carbs - so I try to make that an occasional treat. Same with cheese. Used to do cheese every day. Now I go days without any at all.

I'm still pushing to see 369 (or better) by the end of November! Wish me luck in balancing my carbs as I strive to keep carbs low, closer to 5% than 15%!

I do it by getting my extra calories in as fat. Coconut oil is fat and no carbs... add a TBS to your morning coffee or tea. I use alot of real butter, olive oil & mayo too. I don't stay below 20g a day anymore but I was eating around 2100 cals and under 20g for awhile. I did alot of ground beef or other meat with mayo over salad lettuce. Chicken or other meat dipped in Full Fat Ranch etc. I think I have some daily menus posted near the beginning of this thread...

I don't stay under 20 carbs either.

I have found that, for me, I need my cals at about 1800-1900, protein at 150-175 grams or so, carbs at 40-50 (occasionally I go to 60-80) and fat wherever it falls to let those two things happen. That's usually around 100-120 grams.

I run about 12 miles per week though, so I think it makes a difference.

Thanks! It is exciting.

I was just hoping to get there by Christmas (you know, Winter Onederland ). Of course, I did bounce up a little today, but that's just how I roll. It'll be back there in the next couple of days.

I'm glad you are getting things sorted out. It looks like you're down too.

Down a bit and persevering. In with an Endo I'm excited about on December 4th. I know it takes awhile to get the meds optimized so patience is definately my virtue! Hope to stay right behind you all the way to goal.

Hey everyone....
Thanks for the tips and hints! I changed my menu today and cut out the pumpkin stuff. Added in more coconut oil (LOVE that stuff) and a few other changes!

Zer...every time I read a post by you, I'm amazed. You keep me motivated, thank you!

Gina...I'm hoping to get to where you are! I had a set-back, but am back on track. Your stats are an inspiration to me! How did you get started on the couch to 5k???

Kisha...Thanks for the idea of using beef over lettuce! I was out of town over the weekend and didn't get to track anything, but am back on track today. This thread helps so much, thank you! I'm going to go check out the menus you were talking about. I'm headed back to work tomorrow so will have to see what all I can pack with me!!

I am the QUEEN of chopped up weird combo concoctions. I like hotdogs with green beans and butter, ground beef and tomatoes and onions over lettuce, shrimp with broccoli and butter... bowls of chopped up stuff work for me!

For portable things I like to take leftover dinner, lunch meat rollups (lunchmeat, cheese, luttuce leaf) cream cheese stuffed celery sticks, devilled eggs, string cheese, beef jerky (check the label), nuts...

Thanks!

I tried to do C25K a couple of years ago, but it was a disaster. I was trying to run, staring at a stopwatch, almost running over small dogs and children on skates...... not pretty.

This time, I found some podcasts at Ullrey.com where a guy has recorded music and voice-over cues telling you when to walk and when to run. Much easier and they're free. I think you can get them from itunes free too. The music wouldn't be my first choice, but its worth it to have him tell me when to walk and run.

I absolutely love it! I ran my first 5k about three weeks ago and am running another race in February. I'm going to try a 6 miler this summer, three days before my 43rd birthday. There is a Couch to 5K thread on the exercise board with a lot of great info and support.

Love your dog BTW. We have three- one black, one yellow & one chocolate. Had to have the matched set!

Thread jack:
Awwwwwwwwwwwwww, gotta LOVE labbies! My baby, Chance, is my heart! I love him sooooo much!!! He's a rescue dog (wasn't show quality so the owner didn't want him....he's got an overbite). 10 weeks when I got him and I cherish each day with him! My first lab was a yellow...got him in Scotland...then always black from there (we had a friend who raised them ...yellow female and black male....only ever got black from her). I'd give anything for triplets! But, we just adopted a golden retriever this last spring so I'll just have to 'settle'. Do you have pics???

I too like the all-in-one-bowl approach to dining. Saves time. Never tried hot dogs with green beans, but it sounds tasty to me. Almost anything on spinach works for me, as I am discovering that spinach hits some high points on my tastebuds these days. Am adding that as a regular item, with or without fresh grated nutmeg to enhance flavor and to add thermogenic aspect to my greens!

374.6 today (11/25/08) with just six days left before 12/1.
...that's a 4.8# drop from 379.4 (11/1)
...after some bOunCes that I found disheartening...
...and a low of 373.0 (11/17) that I hope to see again...
...soon...
...if I hold to my LC plan and eat ENOUGH TO LOSE!

So easy to fall into a fasting-to-lose mentality
...in spite of knowing better about metabolism's
reaction to famine/fasting - conservation of resources
and lower metabolic process with less fat burned...sigh.

Alas, not much hope of a double-digit loss in November
...nor much hope of seeing 369# before 12/1...
...but I shall persevere!

What else can we do?

I made myself trek to the fridge - a long long walk for me, as unsteady as I am - and brought back to my room 8oz of liverwurst to eat with my broc.sprouts. I also brought back 4HB eggs, as snackable as anything I know of. For later on, I have six muffin quiches thawing. Might warm them in the toaster oven I have - or just enjoy them as they thaw. Heating them firms them up a lot and gives the meat a really savory scent in the eggy batter full of 'shrooms and leeks. It is part of the booty left by the personal chef who cooked up a storm for me.

It's more than I want, but I suspect it will work well with me and help my body to act as if I am well nourished and can afford to let go of some fat - please!

I am conscious of what a blessing LCFriends is to me, especially informative threads like Ilpirata's BMR thread, where I got targets for my daily calories and daily protein - something to aim for when I can handle FitDay's tally. Have not been visiting FitDay much since they changed their program. I do not handle change well. But I know I can go there to check out a menu as I recompute a new BMR for my weight as it drops. I'm so looking forward to seeing 369# on my scale in December. Looks as if I missed it in November, but I am hopeful that I shall see 369# in December - and maybe see 350# by early February.

Just working my LC plan, faithfully, day by day, bite by bite. Gratefully.

Have a good day - unless you've made Other Planz!
