Welcome to the Young Guns low carb group!

This group was set up for the younger people doing Low Carb.

Being in school and just being at our age we have to deal with a whole different set of issues. Even if you're not following Atkins 100% feel free to join in. Many of us have tweaked our ways of eating and still have great success.

Rules are simple, just show up and give updates and support to others if you wish.

Lets start off with telling us a little about ourselves.

My name is Pete, currently 23 right now and just finishing up with school at Western Michigan University. I started Atkins back in July 2004 after my freshman year of college and ended up losing ~200lbs over the course of 2 years. Got too comfortable after that and got way off track several times and gained nearly half of it back. After several attempts to get back on I've been much more motivated by pre-planning meals, using FitDay, and especially this website to stay on track and have been cheat free since Jan 1st. My goal this year is to get below 200lb so I have a lot of work to do.

Hi Pete, thanks for starting the thread!
My name is Katie and I'm a junior at the University of Central Florida majoring in elementary education. I work in an after school program as a substitute counselor, substitute site director, and bus driver. I've been low carbing for years but at times I was pretty lose in what I called "low carb" and as a result I'm coming up on my 5th Atkinsversary and I'm still not at goal. Back in December my friend Amber, my sister Rachael (dietsprite), and me were all pretty about our holiday weight gain and Amber suggested a friendly weight loss challenge to motivate each other. 7 weeks ago we joined Weight Watchers together. We're all doing WW flex but Rachael and I are also keeping our eating low carb. I have 30 pounds to go until goal and I'm hoping to get there (or near it) by either my birthday (May 10th) or my atkinsversary (May 27th).

At just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. --Romans 5:6-8

Hi guys!
I'm Hayley, I'm 20, and I go to Michigan State University where I am a sophmore (technically a junior with my number of credits) majoring in Political Science pre-law. I plan on going to law school after I graduate. Lets see...I am currently experimenting with a Low G.I. woe-- I have been working with it for about a month and a half or so, and all is well I am not trying to lose any weight, just maintain. I like to stick to my woe and work out at least 5-6 days a week.

I just like the challenges to keep me on track, and to socialize of course! Looking forward to keeping it up here with you guys!

Hey everyone!
I'm Rachael. I'm 23, and also a junior in the University of Central Florida's college of education (working to become an elementary school teacher, hopefully second grade). I started Atkins shortly after my 19th birthday. I lost 50lbs, but then made some poor eating choices and stalled or bounced back and forth within the same 10 lb range for quite some time. A year and a half ago I switched to Scarsdale Medical Diet to try to shake things up and get in the mindset to start losing again. I lost 30 lbs in a couple months' time, but wasn't able to stick to Scarsdale long term, so I ended up going off Scarsdale and just maintaining the weight loss.
After the holiday season passed, like Katie said, we decided to recommit to losing weight and joined Weight Watchers with our friend Amber. We're still trying to keep our carbs low, because lowcarb is definitely a way of living for me, but I'll admit that my carbs have gotten pretty high on some days. I'm really looking forward to being a member of this challenge, because it will help keep me accountable for my keeping my carbs low.

In January when I restarted, my weight was 179.5. It's now in the low 160's(official weigh in is tomorrow, so I'll post my new weight then, I think I may have gone up a bit this week), but I'm already so much closer to goal than I ever thought I'd be! My goals right now are:
Keep my carb's below 50
Work out at least 3 days a week for no less than 30 minutes each time
Reach 150 by summer
log everything into fitday to stay accountable

Hey everyone,
Today was our weigh in at the biggest loser competition that we're doing at work. It's an eight week challenge, and we have two weeks left after tonight. The weight at the weigh in is the weight I put in my stats. I maintained this week, but that's okay, better than a gain.
Tonight after the weigh in Kate and I stayed at the Y to work out. I did 35 minutes at a fast pace on the pre-core machine, and 10 minutes on the treadmill to cool down. It was hard, but I feel great after having worked out. I plan on trying to work out everyday if possible. If I start feeling overwhelmed, then I'll at least try to work out 3 times a week.
I hope everyone else had a great day.

Hey everyone. doing well here. Been really good about preplanning my meals and taking lunch with me to school/work. Went out last night and probably had too big of a steak (28oz!) but skipped the taters and fries.

Take it easy everyone.

My name is Laura and I am 23 years old, as well. I go to school here in Fort Wayne, IN for my associate of applied science for vet tech and I graduate in December. Initially I started South Beach in May 2007, then around September/October I decided to just do low carb my way without a specific plan in mind. I have about 25 pounds to go to my mini-goal and about 50 to my long term goal, but I'll see how I feel once I hit 175. I currently exercise everyday in some shape or form whether it's doing Turbo Jam or walking/jogging.

Pete- Good job on the preplanning! I know if I don't plan the night before, I tend to do poorly the next day. I really need to start bringing my lunch with me on the days that I can't get home for lunch. I usually end up grabbing something I shouldn't if I don't eat lunch at home.

Laura- Welcome! I really want to start working out everyday, with maybe one rest day. I've been kind of lazy the last couple of weeks, lol.

T.T>- Welcome! I loooove Atkins, even if I'm not following it 100% at this stage. Atkins definitely made me look at low carb as a way of living for life, not just a temporary diet. And that's great that you're reading the book, a lot of people jump in without reading anything about what Atkins really is.

I haven't exercised yet today, despite plans to do so. I may go on a bike ride tomorrow. If not, I'll try to get in 35 minutes of a cardio DVD. My eating today has been right on track though, low carbs and within my points range!
I'm glad to see more people in the challenge! I hope everyone has an awesome weekend.

You should definitely not skip meals. It's not good for your body. When you skip meals your metabolism slows down. I learned that the hard way.

Pete, that's great your friend is coming back from Iraq. Will he have to return, or is he back for good?

I haven't worked out as much as planned, but I did go to my best friend's birthday party and resisted hamburgers, hotdogs, a marble cake with fudge icing, and cheese sticks during a trip to the bowling alley, lol.
So, I've done very well with my eating, but haven't been able to work in as much exercise as planned.

Hi guys . I'm Sheena, 23 years old and working on my second degree (my first was in biochemistry). I have been low carbing off and on for a while now but haven't had much success aside from my initial 16 pound weight loss. I recently became engaged and would love to reach my goal by late August when I begin shopping for dresses.

Welcome Sheena!
TT- I'm glad you don't plan on skipping meals. I know sometimes when people get into ketosis it's hard to eat because your appetite is supressed. As long as you don't go more than 6 hour without eating and don't let your calories get too low you should be okay. If it's been 6 hours since your last meal and you're still not hungry, I'd try to eat a little something anyways. Your menu for yesterday looks good.
