Tooter, your posts here and elsewhere have convinced me I need to up my fats. Thank you! I'm going to do a major shopping trip this weekend (I live over an hour from any "major shopping", just have a rather limited local "merc" in our small town. I've been trying to do induction, but had limited groceries, and I noticed that once I ran out of eggs and mayo and butter, I was suddenly having a hard time again. Have not done well. At all. This week. I really think that the lack of fat is contributing to my cravings and loss of "willpower". So I really want to stock up on good lc food this weekend when I go "to town". I was wondering if everyone could list their favorite staples (especially fatty ones ), brands included if possible. For example, I always use Hellman's/Best Foods Mayo, but I know there's some sugar in there. Has anyone used a brand that would be better? I'm trying to keep it as natural as possible, and do a really clean induction. Any suggestions, food combos, etc would be greatly appreciated if anyone has the time. Thanks!
Hippygirl, I use Helmans. It's never given me a problem. I still find it a "good Choice". Sometimes we can go off and change things because other's have (or do) and it's not a bad idea, but in the real world you have to do and use what works for you. Do you know what I mean? Hellmans has never given me a problem. In a perfect world I would grow my own food, raise my own meat, always buy organic. That isn't going to happen, and I end up limiting myself and something that was supposed to be good for me, ends up undermining what I'm actually doing. Meaning, If you don't buy hellmans because you want a perfect mayo...Well, there goes you using any mayo for awhile. lol Am I making my point or just being gabby?

We have to do and use what is workable for our lifestyles. I am not sweating the Hellmans. Always go for the "Better Choice", there is no "Perfect Choice".

I hope that helped. I have one heck of a toothache, so I hope I am making sense.

When you up your fat, also use butter. The Eggs that MomtoEli tried? Those are GOOD and boy do they fill you up and stop any cravings.

Yep, Yep, Yep!!! Also, it helps with the Thyroid, from what I have read. The other Coconut oil wouldn't have all that good stuff in it. It Would be like eating crisco.

Why don't you try a little more fat. Try the eggs that MomtoEli tried, with the extra butter. The fat is something we all need to experiment with to see how much our own bodies need. If you were hungry, your not getting enough. We shouldn't be scared of Fat (but alot of times we are) and we really need to see how much our own bodies need. If I feel hungry? I know that I didn't get enough fat for the day. Yes, this still can happen to me, because I didn't think about it. Hunger is my bodies way of tell me. That's usually when I pull out the CO bark or have a little cream cheese. Voila, it's taken care then.

When I used to eat lots of carbs, I couldn't trust my appetite at all. I'd be tired but not hungry, and when I ate I'd get energy again, so I had to learn to eat even when I wasn't hungry - and I was putting on weight. It just wasn't working properly.

After a while on LC, when I was more or less at my goal weight, I realised that my appetite works the way it should. If I don't eat enough, I get hungry, and I lose weight (which isn't a good thing when you're already low enough). If I eat too much, I don't get hungry, and I gain weight (which isn't what I want either). When I'm getting it right, I'm getting hungry when it's time to eat - hungry enough to really enjoy my food, but not getting hungry well ahead of meals.

It doesn't sound anything much, but realising that as long as I eat right, I can trust my appetite felt like a real breakthrough to me.

Hippygirl (and everyone else) I was reading in the peanut butter Fudge Thread where people make "Atkins Kisses". Made with butter, cocoa powder and splenda to taste. They are supposed to be good (I haven't tried making them yet---this is just from what I have read). That's another option for fat to kill cravings and also satisfying your sweet tooth.

I will try and make them tonight (or more likely Tomorrow).

Also, On this FAT thing. I remember hearing years ago that Shania Twain Drinks Down Olive oil to keep her weight under control. She also had claimed that it helped her skin. I just remembered that. Now she is a vegetarian, So I'm sure she really needed the Extra fat...But the big thing I remembered was that she would do it a few times a day. So, there are other people that have learned fat is good (on their own).

Also, CarolynF has talked to me about Barry Groves (Do a search and you can find his website). He has written a book and has a diet called "Eat Fat, Get Thin). It's low carb and you are to make sure you get plenty of fat.

So, I think the big thing we all have to do is get OVER this fear of fat and find out about our "own" bodies and how much fat and what kinds tour own bodies need.

Having a craving and feeling hungry tells me (from what I have learned about myself) that I haven't had enough fat for the day yet. So, I then make sure I get more in.

Ok, I really am going now. lol I'll be back later. This toothache is killing me!

Tooter,

I sure hope your toothache gets better, I don't know how you concentrate at all with it.

Wow, don't we have a fantastic thread going here?!?!?! I know I get lost sometimes and don't respond to everyone, I apologize. That doesn't mean I don't read them and mean to.

I think you girls are right about the fruit and knew I shouldn't be eating it. Perhaps it was the guilt that got me... I am only at the berries rung of the ladder but haven't tried them yet and will put it off for awhile.

You all have been such inspiration to me and I can't thank you enough for your support and suggestions.

Tooter,

Thanks for your comment on my granddaughter. Yes, she is as sweet as she looks...very kind and is an avid animal lover.

She has Blue, two cats and a guinea pig. The cockatiel that she just got for her birthday in Sept. drowned in the toilet, my daughter forgot to put the lid down and Amanda was inconsolable.

Just two months ago we think the coyotes got her last beloved Siberian cat, the first Siberian had to be put down due to renal failure and she insisted on holding him while he passed.

When she was around seven, her gold fish died. Of course we had to bury it and she asked me if I wanted to say a few words over the grave as she did.

She is one big reason that I want to be as healthy as possible, I want to be around for a long time to enjoy and watch her grow.

Hi everyone.

Sorry I haven't been posting. I did read a bit yesterday, but didn't respond. I'm a quiet type most of the time so please don't think I'm ingnoring anyone. Words just don't come easy for me.

From what I've read, it seems that you're all doing well with LC. Yea!! Way to go!! Your success helps me to continue with mine.

Being good at work despite the baskets of goodies we recieve as thanks from other divisions. Yesterday was a basket full of decadent toffee, fudge, cookies and brownie types. Lord, give me strength.

Tooter - pic of you and your son, well, what can I say...it had me in tears. And you look so young!
ooh...toothache, I hate those! Hope you're getting it taken care of and your out of pain soon.

Winslow - congrats on the grand-daughter news!! I'm definitely jealous.

Lost and Found - hope your 'problem' is all set now.

tz - when it gets cold, I want to eat more too! The bad part is I also want to sleep more when it gets cold. Got to be careful or I'll pack it back on.

breakfast - 2 eggs scrambled with half slice of american cheese, tablespoon of butter and cream. 3 cups coffee
lunch - celery and 7oz of full fat Fage, water.
dinner - 8oz angus strip steak, broccoli, coffee.

Hi Tooter!!! Thanks for your help!!! Normally I have eggs scrambbled in butter...but yesterday, I did not. Too busy shoveling...missed breakfast!!! As soon as I can justify buying coconut oil...the virgin kind...out of the grocery money...I will be making your bark!!! Without the nuts for now!!!

One question...I know that I read that you cook by the seat of your pants, but do you know how much coconut oil, chocolate, and sweetner you put in?

I hope that your tooth is feeling better sweetie!!!

L & F,

I don't think under 1,000 calories is good for you and only ONE gram of fiber will definitely mess up your system. 12 grams of total carbs for the day isn't enough to keep your energy level up.

This is just my opinion based on what I have studied from Atkins 2002 and general health knowledge, I don't know what he says about this in the book you are using but I am sure this wouldn't be recommended as healthy. It would really slow down your weight loss and hurt your immune system.

I just want to see you happy and healthy, I'm not criticizing at all. There is a learning curve with the Atkins WOE and it takes some work. I am working with you not against you, please know that.

Jean
Hi, Jean!!!

Thanks for your useful information!!! I do not know how you got all of that info, but it is neat!!!

12 Carbs? Where did they come from...the salad...eeek!!! I've been trying to keep my carbs as close to zero as possible!!! Actually, I've been eating more on this "diet" than I did before going low carb!!!

Well, you'll be happy to see my piggy menu today then:

4 eggs scrammbled in butter
4 or 5 (can't remember which) slices of bacon
2 leftover center cut pork loin chops (fried in butter)
2 servings of pork rinds
1 slice of deli turkey
1 broiled chicken breast
1/4 cup green beans with butter
water, water, water, and more water

Oink, Oink, Oink...and tomorrow I'm weighing in...it will be two weeks!! I bet that after today, my four pound woosh will be ruined!!!

Thanks again for your help!!!!

Thanks for all your help today, guys. I'm definitely planning on getting some coconut oil, and Tooter, I think I will probably stick with the Best Foods for now. I loved what you posted about what you would do in an "ideal" world. Cracked me up. I also found a handy printable grocery list at Sugar Free Sheila's - someone on my Challenge Group posted it for me. I can get the link and post it if anyone's interested.

My house is so in need of groceries. Does anyone else get gleeful about grocery shopping? I've had more fun making my list than if I were writing to Santa!

Have a great night!

LF here it is for ya!

Chocolate Bark

4 T. (1/4 cup) Virgin Coconut Oil
1-1.5 T. Cocoa Powder
1/4 t. lowcarb sweetner, such as stevia or xylitol
2 oz nuts (optional)

Melt the coconut oil to a liquid, add in cocoa powder and sweetener. Stir to combine and blend well.

Blend nuts into chocolate mixture (Optional)

Have chlled a metal bakeware lasagna or cake pan or pans in freezer for 10 minutes or so. Remove from freezer and line with waxed paper. Then pour mixture into chilled pan and spread to desired thickness.

Pop in refrigerator or freezer on level shelf and let sit 10 minutes or so. It will harden quickly and breaks with a snap.

----------

And here is the link to the thread about it (and how other people made it) and the lead even has pictures.

Ok, the Atkins Kisses?

This is the recipe I found on it.

________________________

Atkins kisses: equal parts butter, unsweetened cocoa powder and splenda. Mold into "kisses" and keep in the fridge or freezer for emergencies. Extremely rich, you usually only need one, and usually only during....um, "that" time...

-----------------------

Hmm....I'm going to have to try this, but equal parts eh?

I'll make this one by morning and let you know how it comes out.

The big thing is that I want each of you to learn about how much fat you each need and how much to use for your own bodies.

Like I said, If I start feeling "hungry" (like the munchies are coming on) I realize that's a sign I need more fat. The next day I might not need as much. It's listening to your body and it's "signs".

Remember me telling you that I can't get my Fat from Regular cheese?

Well, Yesterday my tooth started hurting. I knew I needed to eat Soft foods. My eggs with butter in the morning were fine and the fat in them helped me. Then I get this bright Idea to have part of a can of French onion soup and put shredded cheese in it. Well, I didn't just put a little bit, I put alot.

This morning I was UP 2 lbs!!!!!!! 2 Freaking lbs!!! I told ya, other fats don't bother me, neither does the cream cheese...But regular cheese? I really have to limit it.

*sigh*

It might not be that way for you guys. It's something we have to figure out on our own. I have no clue as to why this happens to alot of people with the Real cheese. I don't know the science behind it, just that I'm one of those people it happens too.

I should be back down to my normal weight by morning. It's just a PITA!

That's okay...Tooter!!! Glad that I could listen to you...instead of the other way around...for a change!!! Maybe...for some odd reason you NEEDED the cheese. If you know what it does, and you limit it to a once in a while thing...then, I'm sure that it's okay!!!
