Lots of people find that. I certainly can't eat high carb/low fat, but I do seem to feel better with some carbs. I still keep them low enough that fat is my main fuel, but not right down at Induction levels.

Hi Winslow! Love your new avi pic and yes, you look very happy and youthful ... good genes??!!

Hi Tooter! Your grandaughter is just gorgeous ... Have you fixed on a name for her to call you? My 2 little grndtrs call me grammy Wendy ... I just cdn't see being a "grandmother," much too young for that!

Hey there Pear, love your avi! Glad to see that you found the coconut oil, it's yummy, isn't it? I also don't do dairy; I'll be interested to hear if your DH likes the bark ...

Hey there Ailuros! Did you draw your avi? Is that your cat? Very cool pic ...

cheers,
Wendy

I just found the cat drawing on the internet somewhere. Ailuros is the Greek name for the Egyptian cat goddess, Bast (when you join a site with tens of thousands of names already taken, you have to do that sort of thing ). I like the idea of being a goddess of hearth and home. Actually, my idea of making it home is pretty cat-like: I curl up somewhere warm for most of the time, and occasionally put a dead animal on the table for those I love .

Wendy, so far I have been calling myself "Grammy" in front of her. I guess I'll have to wait until she can talk to see what I truly end up being Called. I just ADORE her!!!! I babysat her last night and it was pure Heaven.

Yep, I feel better and sleep better too. I also don't wake up feeling "Hung Over". Anyone else get that with carbs? I also don't get bloat. Once in awhile I will have a little something off plan, and believe me, My body quickly reminds me why Lowcarb is best. Not only for weight, but for how I feel and my health.

I'm 46 now, and it seemed that as my 45th birthday arrived, my hormones plunged into chaos. These days I find that if I eat very low carb I run out of energy. At the moment I'm feeling best at around 60-80g per day, but everything's in a state of flux, so that number might need to change.
45 here. I found that Ground FLaxseed was helpful with alot of Peri-menopause symptoms. But...Since I was at Goal I also started bying into the "High Fiber" bit that the medical people started selling. You know, 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day? I up'd my fiber in other ways too. Fiber one cereal...etc. BIG Misstake. I never could "Adjust" to it...Then it seemed you had to lower your fat etc when you had all those carbs (even though you could "detect") fiber.

I read the Gary Taubes book and went back to the Basics. Up'd my Fat. I feel fantastic now and no more IBS. I have since found that I can have a little fiber once in awhile, but Not all the time. I took it too far.

It seems we are always learning and adjusting, eh?

Hi! Can an old newbie join in?

I'm Sandy, 50 (but feeling 40!) - live with my dh and almost 9 yo ds in Iowa. I also have a 30 yo ds who has blessed me with my dil and 3 awesome grandkids.

I've been toying with low carb for several years now and never stuck with it long enough to do much good. My best weight loss methods in the past have been getting divorced and being widowed. Since I really like my dh, I'd like to find another way to do this, ya know?

I get into ketosis at the drop of a hat. Not sure what happens, except I think I get bored. No ... not bored - there is too much variety eating this way to be bored. Maybe lazy is a better word? Whatever it is, I'd really like to form a strong netword of LFC so that when I feel myself headed down that slippery slop I'll have much emotionally invested somewhere to just cut and run!

Thanks for the heads up on the coconut oil! I have a jar of it in my cupboard wondering what I was going to do with it. Anyone know what the shelf life of that stuff is?

Good Sunday morning to you all! The sun is shining in Chicagoland. It's chilly but nice.

Wendy - I'm happy to hear Lucy (and you) made it through that ordeal. Ouch! I imagine keeping her calm during recovery was the most difficult. Sheba has 2 new back knees. She has torn both ACL's. We are loving the new addition, Riley.

Ailuros - I'm surprised Wendy didn't mention the Fat Flush plan, yet. I believe it is designed to help with the hormonal roller coaster. I like the Lean for Life plan. It can be up to 80 carbs, but I always stay in ketosis, even with carbs in that range.

MomtoEli - I sure hope you find a better way! I get into ketosis by the evening when I start very low carb in the morning. Then I can't sleep that night. I suppose I should re-start again tomorrow and plan for now sleep tomorrow night.

Celeste - it's good to see you here, too! Does Godiva make sugar free chocolates?

Pear - hi!

Tooter and Winslow - thanks for starting this. Tooter, you have always been so great at helping people by using all your own ups and downs as great examples.

OK - about me... 48, married, 3 kids - 16, 15, and 12 2 Dogs and a bird I'm a Realtor not selling much these days. I went from 70 hour work weeks to 15 hours at the most. I'm considering looking for some sort of temp work to keep me busy. I've been lowcarbing on and off since 1995, when I first started following a fat flush program by Ann Gittleman. I moved on to Atkins when I found this website in Jan. 2000.

I saw my goal weight a few times in between 2001 and 2002, but I have not seen it since. Thankfully, I have not gained all my weight back. I have about 20 to lose to get back to goal. I know it's possible, just have to do it.

I was fortunate enough to have met Mangus and 808State. I vacationed with Mangus and Lo in Las Vegas. I did a local television interview in Chicago with 808State several years ago, when the lowcarb food stuff started to take off.

As far as Kimmer, I never respected 'her way or the highway' advice. I ignored her over the years. By the time she had taken over the main lobby, I was too busy with work to care. I truely feel sorry for those that fell for her bull. And - I hope to God that Dana114 knows that Kimmer is a fake. KimATC really was duped and took a job for Kimmer. I pushed Kim hard to open her eyes to the truth. I pushed her too hard, as my posts were deleted. Anyway - that also blew my relationship with some other 'friends' on this board. I don't regret what I did, as if Kim had listened sooner (to Tooter, too!), things would not have turned so bad for her. I do regret losing friendships, but I also have to believe that possibly they were not true friends to begin with.

Hi, everyone!!!!

This, not dieting, computer stuff is all new to me!!! I've been reading a lot lately!!!! I have to say that I think that this is a very helpful tool to utilize!!!

After hearing about Kimkins on the news, I started looking here. I must say...not that I agree with Kimmers ethical values (lies)...many people have lost weight.

I also read how many people feel that she endorced/gave "unhealthy" dieting advice. Well, how healthy is being obese?

Let me tell you:
I've become obese...220 pounds!!!! I'm only 5'6" tall!!!! I also have sleep apnea. The doctor explained to me that this is like a snowball....sleep apnea disturbs your sleep, which then slows your metabolism, which then you gain more weight, which then, makes your sleep apnea worse.

I got this way from not eating healthy!!! Since my divorce, I've been cooking on a very strict budget....two boys with bottomless pits!!!! So, casseroles seemed to be the most economical thing to make. Now, I turn to carbs for energy to stay awake, to make me feel better. When really, I am just making matters worse!!

When I was younger, I could eat anything and still didn't gain weight. Now, I am going to have to take matters in to my own hands!!!

Yesterday I ate: 4 deviled eggs (2 eggs)
1 slim jim
half of a tuna salad sandwich
diet pepsi
not enough water-water is a forced issue with me

Today: 9:38 a.m.
Nothing yet

So, I have one question!!! How do people retain their weight loss? My sister yo-yo's, and sadly, I must admit...if I look like her after yo-yo-ing, I'd rather just not try!!! She has so much more "fat" than before...you know "rolls" everywhere. She never had these before!!! I know "lifestyle change"! Obviously, from looking around, not many people want to do this, but how do you do this on limited money, and with society eating how we do?

Any support from you guys will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Hey Tooter,

Yep, the best. What a joy ... and a blessing!

I had to settle in on Grammy Wendy, since my GDs have so many grandparents and great-grandparents, many long-distance, that it helps to have a special name that means just you!

Oh yeah, Fat Flush (Ann Louise Gittleman) is my maintenance plan ... you can google her new site, lots of info there.

I especially recommend all of Ann Louise's writings about nutrition, esp for peri- and post-menopausal women. She is wonderful on hormonal issues.

BTW, Ann Louise is a real person.

I met her.

You do not need to pay anything to access her website.

She is on her website weekly and will answer your specific questions.

See where I am going with this??? ;^)

cheers,
Wendy

Hi LandF

Go to the User Control Panel link near the top left of the page. You can modify all that info there.

OK - off to check out Ann's website.

Lost and Found,

Wow, you are not eating very much. What is your plan?

To answer your question: I maintain my weight loss by being very active (I have a very young-at-heart German Shepherd, who needs a lot of exercise) and by eating lots of delicious proteins, fats, fruits and vegetables.

I eat very simply and very economically. Every weekend I cook a turkey breast and a beef roast in the crock pot. That lasts us all week long, with minimal prep-time. I watch my grocer's markdowns & buy the highest quality meat super-cheap.

I buy all of my veggies, high-glycemic fruits (berries, melons), and salad fixings from local farmers, or in the organic section of the grocer.

No sugar, no bread, no potatoes, no sodas, no rice, nothing "white."

Like you, I never had to watch my weight in my life. I could eat anything. Only in my 40's did the weight start piling on.

I will eat this way the rest of my life. Why? Because I have never been healthier, had so much energy, or so much fun ...

cheers,
Wendy

Flower power: Thanks for your advice!!!!!

Centralpa: Thanks for your encouragement!!! I am trying to jump start my weight loss!!! That is why yesterday, my first day, I ate so little. I, actually, was not too hungry!!! Although, I was...like I am right now...craving some potato chips!!!!!

So, you eat no potatos, rice, noodles, dairy....anything that is white...you do not eat? Do you worry about bone problems...due to no milk, cheese, etc...(since it's white...I'm assuming that you do not eat it.)?

I just do not understand the new "healthy eating" way of life!!!! It's all new to me.

Running out the door, so have to be quick:

Atkins on calcium (Dr. ATkins Vita-Nutrient Solutions, p. 117)

"A diet high in sugars, grains, and other carbohydrates weakens bones ...
... the content of milk sugar (lactose) is why milk is not as ideal a source"

Good sources of calcium (p. 119):
sardines
sesame seeds
salmon
almonds
Brazil nuts
kale
swiss chard
spinach
bok choy
mustard greens
pinto beans

Yep, I eat all of them!

cheers,
Wendy

Another newbie here, I'm still trying to find my way around.

I purchased coconut oil several weeks ago but haven't remembered to use it yet. Tooter, do you have any suggestions for someone just out of the gate?

I have been doing Atkins for seven weeks now and adjusting with OWL. I would love to start the new year under 200, that is my short term goal.

I am mother of three, grandmother of six. One grandson is in Great Lakes and should be finishing boot camp on Dec. 2lst. He is following our family history in the military.

This is such a warm friendly place and I can see there is a lot of support.

Hey, everyone!!!!

I keep seeing people mentioning all of these different types of oils, seeds, etc....!! Where do you buy these things? Are they expensive?

That bark recipe sounds like you are cheating....it sounds so good!!!

centralpa: Thanks...I did not realize that there are so many things that have calcium!!!

Well I Did It!!!!

Hi, everyone!!!!

I was really hungry. So, I ate!!!!! After what little I ate yesterday, and it now being one o'clock in the afternoon...the next day...I was dizzy!!!!

Are any carbs allowed? Or do low carb diets only work with none?

So far today:

~Two small slices of vienna bread (served open-faced)
Ingredients on top of bread:
~One can of tuna mixed with a dallop of real mayonaise
~1/2 piece of provolone
~romaine lettuce
~slice of tomato
~one pickle (dill-the kind that has been cut long wise---
for sandwiches)
This is probably all that I will have t
