Autumn 2006 CAD/CALP Challenge

Hello! Welcome to the Autumn thread for the Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet!

There are many of us here at LCF who have found ongoing success with the CAD diet. This is the place to get to know us and hopefully JOIN US! The people here are wonderful and supportive. We love to answer questions and cheer you on!

If you are interested in this diet, I highly recommend getting the book and reading it thoroughly. I will explain the diet, but you really need to go straight to the source. They certainly explain much better than me!

This diet works because it controls your insulin release, which is related to how you store and use body fat. (See the book for all the scientific references!) You are allowed only three meals and one optional snack on CAD. This is how the insulin releases are controlled. Two of the meals are called “Complementary Meals” (CM’s) and the third is called a “Reward Meal” (RM.) There is no calorie counting, no carbohydrate counting… it is a very simple diet so none of that is necessary. If you follow the rules, everything falls into place.

CM’s are essentially very low carb meals. You divide your plate in half, and ½ your meal is protein, and the other ½ is low carb veggie. Simple. There is a specific list of veggies to choose from, called “crave –reducing” choices. The list is pretty extensive, but it does not include all low carb veggies. You are allowed to eat from this list, and that is all. If it’s not on the list, you don’t eat it. (But rest assured, there’s so much to choose from you won’t feel restricted.) It’s easy and flexible, it just needs to be balanced, protein & veggie. It is very much like an Atkins meal.

The optional snack is the same as the CM, just smaller.

An RM is a flexible meal you can have for your choice of Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. This makes it easy to plan for events like restaurant meals or parties. For the RM you begin your meal with a salad. Then you divide your plate into thirds. 1/3 is protein, 1/3 is low carb veggie, and that last 1/3 is ANYTHING YOU WANT. If it fits in that 1/3 balance, you can have it. Potato, Bread, Cake, Cookies, Candy, Noodles, Rice, whatever you feeling like having.

This does not give free license to pig out on carbs. It must be BALANCED. If you want more cake, you also have to take the same portions of chicken and green beans, too.

One more catch: This RM must be completed within a one hour time limit. This has everything to do with controlling the insulin release. This is very important. Also, you are not allowed to snack (aside from the optional complementary snack.) You eat three to four times a day, and that’s it. Believe it or not, this will not be a problem. Your meals should carry you easily to the next meal. It’s all about that insulin control.

Many people have the misconception that the RM is a 1-hour pig out all you can eat junk-a-thon. IT IS NOT. People also think that if they even have one taste of sugar they will binge into oblivion. THIS IS NOT TRUE. If you are true to the diet and stick to the 1/3 portion of carb, you will be just fine. You will be pleasantly surprised that the single slice of pie is enough, and you’re okay not going back for more and more like in the old days!

That’s it. The CALP diet is one step beyond this, it doesn’t allow any gum or mints or soda or artificial sweeteners. These release insulin the same as food, and will mess up what you are trying to do. You can have these items during your RM.

Overall this is a very flexible diet that fits well into the real world. The people here all have their own ways of making the diet work for them. Look at their losses! This WOE works wonders. (On your psyche, too! No deprivation!)

This thread is where all us CAD people hang out and discuss. Hopefully they will all come in and introduce themselves soon, tell you what works for them, how long they’ve been at it and how much they have lost.

HI just a quick hello while I take a break from shopping LOL
NO really I hit, Kohl's, Costco and Wallyworld and I think I was gone for about 2.5 hours. My body is also on EDT but I am back in Utah so I am a bit tired right now...I think I need to do a little power nap to regenerate.
Glad we have a new thread...hope everyone finds us again LOL

Evening everyone
Rainy and cool here in Utah but now it feels like fall and it is my favorite time of the year! Must be because I am a Sept baby.
Was a busy day getting back into the routine of things...did chores and shopping....bought the new scale but I think I am going to be weighing in heavier than at my parent's home Just a feeling but I will know tomorrow
Did good with my food today:
B: omlet with chives, parsley and cheese and a bout a Tbs of fresh salsa
L: fast food cheese burger no bun of course and a string cheese
D: LInda's Taco soup (very yummy) salad with a few shreds of carrot and 1/2 of a small yellow tomato from the garden (Yum yum glad to be eating our own garden again) 1/2 squares of bittersweet chocolate (rm calp)
no snacks but I was on the run today
Did OK on the water but I need to do a little better
Did the learn and burn part of the Turbo Jam DVD for the first time and it was fun. I will probably do it one or two more times to "get the moves" cause I felt a big akward some of the time LOL
Watched the Biggest Looser and enjoyed it but thought it was rather unrealistic as far as a one week weight loss for almost everyone else in the world. I guess if I only had to work out and prepare meals and nothing much else then I might loose faster but to me the work outs should have been a bit gentler to start with and if you take almost any weight loss plan they tell you that losing more than 2-4 lbs in a week it good progress.
Oh well I guess I am jealous
Anyway hope you are feeling like you are making progress and haveing a great LC-y week!

Mornin CAD/CALP ers from Utah
Looking forward to a good day here...still catching up from my time away. I am so happy to see the results many of you are getting by persevering through the no losses!
Tried out the new scale this morning and according to it I am about .7 more than when I went to Pa on vacation so....thinking it is close to what I was getting on my parent's scale and that is good. That means I am only about .7 away from my low before the splurge in PA LOL
I am also trying something out...a skinny pants challenge to myself . I went to Kohls yesterday and found a lovely pair of size 16 pants that would go with my new a bit snug jacket I just bought from QVC. So my challenge is to get into those pants and jacket with some breathing room. when I do then I get to order a pretty blouse to go with! LOL I am going to take a pic of me in the pants and jacket now and then update myself each week to see how it goes.
What do you think? Anyone else want to try?
I am going to try out a new recipe today...not sure which one but Linda Sue's taco soup was great yesterday and I froze most of it for later.
Any suggestions????

Good Morning! Busy day today so I can only stay for a minute. We're going out to lunch today in the next town over. DH is putting my bike in the trunk and I will ride home. He has to go on to a conference overnight and will be home tomorrow night.

We're getting ready to have a rummage sale tomorrow so I will be busy all day with that. We have a birthday party to go to on Saturday and I've got a friend coming to visit on Sunday. I'm tired just thinking about it!

I'll try to stop back in later today!

Whew! Linda, you're so busy! You make me tired just reading about the stuff you do.

I'm a bit sore today still, but I know that once I get to class tonight and stretch and warm up, I'll feel great. I always get the adrenaline going and it gives me energy when I'm there.

I finally got out and mowed the yard last night, but couldn't finish because it got dark quicker than I expected. So, I got out first thing this morning to finish and had to mow in a light rain and 68 degrees. I was actually wishing I had a sweater on. What a change from what we've been having. My DH got out the weed-eater and things are looking better now. We're really bad about letting our yard go in the summer, especially the weed-eating. I have some perennial flowers in my back flowerbed that have just gone crazy since we had that good rain on Labor Day. They're so pretty, I wish I had some planted in the front yard too. Maybe next year.

Have a great day, everybody!

Happy Autumn, everyone!

Thanks for putting up our new thread, Angela...but, where are ya? Just a mere flash and then she was gone...

I'm really pleased to have weighed in at 285.5 for two days so my weekly will be at least 1 pound lost and maybe more.

Things are pretty much copacetic here in Northern California. It's a lot cooler at night, and the air smells great. I, too, love the Fall, Cathie!

I think I love all seasons, especially at the very beginning, because they each have qualities I look forward to - the loveliness of spring's new growth and fresh fruits and veggies, lazy days in the summer and all the great bbqs, fall's amazing foliage colors and wanting to eat heartier soups and such, and then comes winter, and it's time for holiday fun and yummy goodies.

Is it any wonder I need an eating program? Everything is tied to food, but that's what I love about CAD/CALP - we don't have to be deprived.

Another phenomenon that I experience with the beginning of change of seasons is I get tired earlier at night - and in the afternoon, I want a nap! Any one else get that (yawn) feeling?

Laurie, I am so happy for you - you sound so upbeat! Hope your body isn't too sore after tonight's class.

And very busy Linda is back in Energizer Bunny mode...you and my friend Maureen are the busiest women I know. I often call her a "plate spinner" (baby boomers - remember those guys, on the Ed Sullivan shows?)

Glad to know the new scale was not harsh, Cathie. A couple of weeks ago I weighed myself on my Auntie's spring scale and was devastated to see myself up 9 lbs from the home reading. However, got home and was pleased to see .5 lower then when I left for the visit. I'll take my home scale's weight as the truth-my scale is a Tanita digital and I believe it is much more reliable.

So good to see everyone doing well, feeling healthy and generally happy!

Take care all!

H everyone
Checking in for the night and nice to see Mimi again! Hi
Laurie...at least the owchies are for a good reason and I bet you will get a whoosh fairy visit
Today was good mealwise but for some reason I kept on getting hungry??
B: low carb bowl from Carl's Jr
L: 4 oz sliced roast beef and 2 oz cheese rolled up
S: 1 oz cheese microwaved into crackers but they didn't get quite crispy enough so more time next time
D: salmon with butter and spices, 1 zuchinni latke ( yummy from the recipe forum) 2 squares of the 60% chocollate...so yummy
good on my water and I am now taking the chromium pills with nothing but water in the morning cause when I reread that section in the book it says not to take it will food or other meds/supplements and I was just taking it with all my other pills
Took my pic for the skinnier pants challenge that I am doing with myself ...sigh wish there wasn't such a big gap but I have a big belly like a man and small hips.
Have a great night and see you all in the morning

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been MIA. I just completed a three gown project for a bride back east-- two bridesmaid gowns and a gown for her mother-- renaissance wedding! I'm hoping she's not a bridezilla, I'm still waiting to hear from her after the gowns arrive. You just never know!

I am doing well-- still not weighing, but none of my clothes are tight, so I'm sure everything is fine. I think I am going to be more active on the board, I miss you guys.

My Mother and I are doing CALP together, she comes over for dinner almost every night and it really helps me to not be lazy and to plan a nice meal for everyone. (I like to cook, so it's not a hardship... I've just been so busy lately that a quick burger or an ordered pizza suddenly sounded good-- NOT GOOD!! I need to get back to the homemade basics that I love!!)

Laurie, way to go with the karate class!! I am very proud of you for getting back out there and doing it. Don't you just love bartering?? I think it's an ancient form of commerce that is easily forgotten in our modern world. I do a lot of bartering because I can sew-- my girlfriend (the one in the picture, green renaissance dress) is a massage therapist and we trade her much-needed massages for sewing projects or computer repair (my husband is an Intel geek who really knows his stuff) all the time! We also traded for our pet African Grey Parrot-- I was in the jewelry industry at the time, and I traded the breeder little 14k gold bands for the birds legs, which I was able to buy at cost-- quite a savings for an expensive and loquacious bird! (He's our other "baby," He's 11 years old this year and we've had him since he was a hand fed little naked featherless chick!) Anyway, I hope you are enjoying your classes!

Yoyo-- welcome! I don't think I've welcomed you yet! This is a wonderful bunch of ladies, you will get a lot of support here. Post often!

Hi Cathie! I like the Biggest Loser, too-- but I have a hard time watching it, I just don't like the low-fat low-calorie diets they are on, or the way they go to great lengths to cover up the fact any time someone is using low carb outside the ranch. Remeber Seth last year? (What a hottie he turned out to be!!) Anyway, in the first airing it showed him at a restauraunt and he order a clear Atkins meal-- salmon and greens, no bread-- and the second airing they cut the little scene out entirely. It still bugs me! Anyway, ANYONE can lose 27 pounds in a week if all they do is exercise their @$$es off for 12 hours a day and eat 500 calories a day with 50 grand on the line. I'm just not willing to work that hard! (Is that so wrong?) You are doing so well on CAD!! Keep up the good work and keep posting your menus, I love to see what everyone is eating! Good luck with your skinny pants! Let's see a picture!!

Mimi-- girl, you have lost 22 pounds already?? Since JUNE?? That is absolutely wonderful! Just goes to show if you follow the rules and keep plugging along it all adds up! WAY TO GO!! I am also glad that Autumn is coming and the seasons are changing. Oregon is gorgeous when all the leaves turn, and I love the crisp smoky smell of the air and wearing sweaters and scarfs and hats and going to the farms to get pumpkins and drink hot apple cider. (During RM of course!!)

Hi Linda! Anything good at your rummage sale? I love garage sale-ing and thrift store shopping. I use to sell vintage clothing and I found the GREATEST stuff! I once found a set of Tepco dishes that I bought for $45 and turned around and sold for $900, and a found a Breyer horse that I bought for $1.00 and sold for $850, and I happened upon a costume from the old TV show "Airwolf" for $2.50-- what it was doing in a thrift store in rinky-dink Hillsboro Oregon I have NO IDEA-- but I sold it to a dude in Japan for $1250. You gotta love eBay!! Those were my luckiest finds, but I found plenty of beautiful vintage clothing I sold for $50-100. I kind of like the thrill of the hunt! Now that I don't "make the rounds" anymore I miss it!

Hi Oraki and Cindy and Brenda and anyone else I missed! It's hard to catch up when I've been out of the loop so long.

Glad everyone is doing well!!

Well, I'm still up. I spent a good part of the evening with DS getting the tables set up in the garage. Then I found out that his friend (that has the most stuff in the sale) never put an ad in the paper so they were going to just put a few signs out. Well, we live in the country - signs won't get more than a few people here. So we are going to put it off till next week. We may put a few signs up on Saturday morning because that's garbage drop off day and there is more traffic in the area. (We have to take garbage to a drop off point at the town hall - no pick up.

I did have a good RM lunch today. As I mentioned, DH and I went out to a place in the next town over. Had a really good burger, homemade potato chips and another appetizer that was similar to tater tots. We split the chips and the other appetizer so we didn't overeat on either one. Then I rode my bike home - took the really long way and ended up with a 25 mile bike ride!

Angela, I'm with you on not wanting to work as hard as the Biggest Loser people. I do a enough exercise and I still need to plan my meals better but I'm not in a huge rush to lose. I have such a long way to go and at this point, I just want to continue to feel as good as I do! I'll take the slower loss and be sure that it's a lifetime thing.

Well, it's late and I'm tired so I'm off.....see ya later!

Happy Birthday Cathie. I hope you have a great day. Cleaning out the sewing room!! Don't live it up too much now...lol.

Based on everyone's menus it looks like I am having too many carbs at my RM. I think that will change over time. I am just trying to get some of the tastes that I have been missing over the past 2.5 years.

I don't like weighing myself daily, but I have been doing so based on the recomnedations in the book. The scale has gone steadily down every day a few ounces (except for one day). I am down 1.8 lbs since I started on Monday. Usually the first week the loss is greatest so sounds like I may have to make modificaions to sustain a 1-2 lb a week loss.

Yesterday I had
B- 2 eggs, 2 bacon, celery sticks
L- 4 oz pork loin, celery sticks
RM-salad (with itialian dressing), Kielbasa approx 7 oz (no fillers/no carbs per serving), boiled cabbage with some butter, mashed potatoes, cocoa made with low carb milk, cocoa, and liquid splenda.

Water throughout the day

I have not been having cravings and for the most part I have not been hungry during the day.

I am inpressed with everyone's exercise routines. Biking, Karate, walking etc. I really need to incorporate more activity in my routime. Aqua aerobics twice a week is not cutting it.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Any HAPPY BIRTHDAY CATHIE!.

Hi guys, I'm back!!

First let me wish Cathie a have a very good year!!! Do something special for yourself today from me!!!

I see we have a new person on cad/calp!!! Welcome Carolyn!!! You'll like it here. As for he broccoli...in their new book they made a connection to broccoli this way..."did you know that two stalks of broccoli has as many carbs as an ice cream bar?? Now we're not saying to eat ice cream, but just that there's alot of carbs in broccoli, and you should be aware." Thats why there's an * by the broccoli in the book of calp. Again Carolyn!!

Angela, you did a FANTASTIC job with the new fall season of calp. Thank you!! Hope you got my e-mail, that only took me about 2 hours to do! I just can't get this picture thing down, each time I put in some pictues, I do it a different way, so I have pictures scattered all over the place!! You and mom are doing it together is so cool!!! I'm trying to get my own daughter to do it with me. Now she's mad cause I've lost 40 some and she's still at the starting gate. Oh well maybe some day she will see the light.

Laurie, karate huh? My son did that for a couple of years, he got up to a yellow or white belt?? Don't know that much about it to say. good for you though, I'm glad your doing something you like.

Hi Linda, your busy as ever on your bike, we should have a race, me on my excersize bike and you on the real bike, is that the same?? I don't think so, yours is much harder.

Mimi, your down in the eighties already?? Jesh, that was quick!! I remember when you were just getting to twoterville, go go go Mimi... I'm happy for you.

Hi Brenda, are you back yet?? Did you have a good time and stay on plan?

As for me... hmm lets just say, I won't ever eat in a resturant again!! We went to Bend Ore. just to eat at this chinese resturant, they have a low carb choice too, so I ordered 2 meals, one to eat there and 1 to go, (low carb). After I ate the last one at night time, I got such bad cravings from it that I dove into my candy bag and stuffed myself, then went to bed, well in the morning I was so sick with gas commong from both ends, I thought I was going to die!!! I didn't eat all day, this was yesterday and we was heading back home anyway, so I waited till I felt better, which was all day! I will never do that again. I weighed myself for self punishment and it was'nt too bad...191... so back to clean eating for me and thats where it'll stay...

I'm gald to be home again and get back to my routine!!! See you all later. Hope I didn't miss anyone, we're getting a nice big family!!

Hi Everyone! Looks like everyone is doing great! Even if we didn't necessarily eat the best, we learned from it so that's great!

I've been doing chores and now it's break time! I have quite a few little tedious things to do yet. So I thought I'd take a break first.

Lunch was earlier than usual because my DS had to leave early to do a few things. He works 4 days a week (10 hr days) and has Fridays off. We had cheddarwurst and Dreamfield's pasta with shredded cheese and banana cupcakes that his friend made. Not very balanced or nutritious and I don't even care today - a little PMS going on.

Cathie! Have a great day!

I'm off to get more chores done so that when DH gets home from his conference, we can relax with a movie or two!

Just a pop-in to say HI! Welcome, Carolyn!! Great to have you here.
For the record, I did pretty darn well on vacation. There's a neat little restaurant called "Java Joe's" that we stopped at the first night in St. Ignace. GREAT food...REAL food, so it was easy to stay on plan..YAY! That's pretty much the only place we ate the entire time. They had a huge menu, and everything was delicious. They have a big salad that's just SO good. Had that the first night, with pizza. I was a little leery about ordering pizza, but after eating the salad, I only had room for two small slices, and didn't eat the back part of the crust. And, they put LOTS of toppings on it. We got a veggie pizza, and it was just loaded with yummy stuff. And, this town is definately for walkers! We walked a LOT every day. Spent one day on Mackinaw Island, and that was ALL walking. Did buy some fudge there, but made it part of my RM, so I'm really proud. Don't know if I lost any weight, but I for sure didn't gain any, so that's good enough for me after 5 days of vacation.
I'll be back for a "real" post, just wanted to pop in and say howdy! Thanks for starting the new thread Angela, you do such a nice job of explaining the whole thing!

Have a happy, happy day, Cathie!

Brenda, it sounds like you had a wonderful vacation. Congratulations on doing so well with your WOE. I'm glad you're back.

Cindy, ouch! I hope you get over that little set-back in a hurry.

Mimi, you're doing a really good job on your weight loss. I'm trying not to be jealous.

Hi, Angela and Linda!

I'm off now to watch the fights at the karate dojo. It's pretty exciting. One of my instructor's old students is coming today from San Antonio to fight someone from another studio. Our guy's name is Jason and he's absolutely gorgeous, not to mention an incredibly gifted athlete and fighter. Here's an old pic of him:

Even though Jason hadn't trained in 2 1/2 years either, he still beat the stuffings out of his opponent tonight. Only one guy had the nerve to fight him. The other two chickened out. Our sensai (instructor) teaches a very tough style of martial arts. It's the real deal and all sparring is full contact. (Which is why I don't spar. I concentrate on the self-defense and fitness aspect.)

The opponent's name was Ariel (yes, he was a guy) and apparently my sensai had seen him fight at a charity event and was put off by his show-off behavior. He told Jason that he'd heard about him and was looking forward to sparring with him because it was hard to find a worthy opponent. My sensai snapped, "ALL of my fighters are worthy opponents"!

By the end of the first round Ariel had a bloody nose. She let him rest a few minutes and let him clean up his nose and then he was ready for Round 2. Again, Jason was all over him and his nose was bleeding pretty badly. He was woozy from taking a shot in the head. She asked if anyone else was willing to fight Jason and no one would, not even the Korean "master" black belt who mumbled that Jason didn't fight in the same style. Ariel stood up and said, "I'll go another round." She said, "No, I'm not going to let you because you're going to get a broken nose. You don't know how to protect your face." This was a black belt who should know how to protect his head!

You couldn't help but feel a little sorry for Ariel. He got taken down a few notches and was very humble after that. It sounds horribly violent, but really, it's fascinating to watch someone with the skills Jason has. His techniques are incredibly precise and he protects himself so well. And, believe it or not, he's very humble and respectful. I playfully sparred with him one night and I couldn't even touch him.

This is so good for me, physically and mentally. I'm so glad to be back to it. Maybe I'll have a whoosh in a week or two.
