Yeah, but at first Catkin said she was taking 1 1/2 Tablespoons. Then corrected to 1/2 Tablespoon. Just making sure.
Michelle, the dive trip was great. Going again November 5 and 13. |

Great Job Rouge!!
Don't you love when your clothes get from tight to fitting, then to baggy? I remember when I was working in the gift shop of hiltons and I had to wear their blue suit. After losing about 50lbs I was swimming in them, eventually my boss told me I looked to rediculous and ordered new sizes for me. It sure felt great!Today I had my mom's pumpkin soup. She grew these pumpkins from her yard and makes them with pork, the fatty park of it, and into this hearty soup. It's really good, and I was careful not to eat too much of the pumpkin. THe problem is that I ate waaay too much of the soup after all. My stomache actually hurt after dinner from all the soup and the stretching. I hope I havn't gained back the inches that I had lost. ![]()

I have a question regarding the cla/gla. I am just coming back to low carb. A few years back I lost 30 pounds but unfortunately and stupidly I went off plan and gained it all back and then some. I just started back this week and am starting the cla/gla. Do you think the cla/gla will work as well at the beginning of losing as it does for those who have lost some of their weight already?
I also wanted to say how much motivation I am getting from reading the posts from everyone that has done so well so far. Thanks. |

CAT- welcome back to low carbing. I'm similar to you! I gained I lost and then I gained back. This time it's different because I'm doing it the healthier way.
To address your question, I am not at my goal weight yet and I started my CLA/GLA. The important thing depends on how you measure success, if you use the scale (which is fine if you can tolerate water gain), CLA/GLA seems to slow down weightloss for some; but if you care about inches (which is what i care about, seeing how I always wieghed more than other people my dress size), CLA/GLA is the a great supplement. I've made it a mini-goal to stay away from that awful scale. All it does it discourage me. However, I've taken out the tape measurer int he mean time and to me this is a much better way to measure my loss. ![]() |

Thanks for that whoosh fairy.
Last night I weighed and that scale said 155.... I went to bed smiling... only to wake up at 158 again... I really think maybe it's the swelling. I can't seem to break the scale addiction, and now I can't even measure to make myself feel better because my hips and back are swollen. Take some advise from me.... DO NOT let your kids toys get under your feet!!! They're sneaky lil things... ya gotta watch 'em. |

Woohoo!! Congrats Tom. That's great. Congrats to all the other losers too - Heather, Toothpick, Rogue, lucky...You all give me hope.
Michelle, hope you're feeling better. Lucky, that pumpkin soup sounds devine. It's gotten very cold, very fast here in the Northeast. I'm not ready for winter yet! Cat125, I'm also new to this board and to CLA/GLA (but not to low carb). I asked the exact same question a few pages back. The consensus is that the combo may stall the loss on the scale, but hopefully will produce great inches lost and then the weight will continue to go down. Some have stalled for weeks or a month. I decided to give it a go even though I only reinducted 3 weeks ago. Good luck with whatever you decide. Hope everyone has a great day! |

CAT - the scale will be slow to move for a while so measure weekly to see your losses. It can be very aggrivating when that scale will not move. Also, as I posted on one of these pages.... a friend said that she went a couple of weeks at one point with no inches lost but she kept taking them and it really does pay off. Also she said that her scale only moved tiny amounts until the 3rd month when she lost 22 pounds (I think that's what it was... hafta go look) in that one month.
Edited to add: This friend learned that I quit taking them for a week to see results on the scale and she made me promise not to do that again, she said that it will happen and so far I am happy. Be patient and you will see results.

Good Morning Everyone, Michelle I'm still here
I'm a big lurker. I read the posts everyday though. Everyone here is so wonderful and I love reading about everyone else's loss. Keeps me motivated My morning so far has been FABULOUS. I woke up and measured and had lost another 3 inches That's 8.5 inches in 20 days. Me very happy. Yet again diet and me aren't on the same page. I eat right about 1/2 the time. Question for the people who bought theirs at Wally World. What brand and what was it called? I can't seem to find any at my store. I got the Evening Primrose Oil at Target(God's Gift to Women ). I work at Sams Club so I was going to check there.Fast Losses To All, Deb

The brand I got at Wally World is Rexall. It is Tonalin 1000-CLA.... they alphabetize their vitamins so it is under "T" It has a blue lable with white writing and a red stripe near the bottom of the label... hang on, I'll take a pic.....

Actually, I read somewhere that it helps blood pressure... in fact I have high blood pressure and quit taking my BenicarHCT just before starting the cla/gla. I haven't had any problems.
Have you taken any decongestants? Sometimes they will raise blood pressure, my doc told me never to take any, only what he prescribes. |

Here it is from this site http://www.barleans.com/literature/o...ing-hyper.html
Borage oil (GLA) Borage Oil for Normalizing Hypertension If you are having blood pressure problems, we want to tell you about a newly introduced, natural pathway for conquering this condition. Borage oil is a rich source of the essential fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Studies show that borage oil may be beneficial for persons with the most common type of high blood pressure. The oil, derived from the seed of the blue, star-shaped, borage flower, is nature's richest source of GLA. Evidence suggests that certain individuals may lack the necessary activity of a specific enzyme to effectively metabolize the linoleic acid found in other polyunsaturated oils to GLA. This can have devastating effects on circulatory health since for most of us linoleic acid is required to produce adequate amounts of the more biologically active GLA. When you consume foods rich in linoleic acid, your body must metabolize this compound to GLA. But the body requires the enzyme delta-6 desaturase (D6D) in order to convert linoleic acid to GLA. For many people, however, advancing age or a poor diet is correlated with a marked drop off in D6D activity. Without adequate amounts of GLA, the body goes into a state of chronic inflammation. This promotes onset of heart disease, diabetes, alcoholism, atopic dermatitis, premenstrual syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. The exciting health news is that with borage seed oil we circumvent the D6D enzyme system by providing preformed GLA. In fact, borage seed oil enhances D6D activity in aged animals, according to experimental studies. Supplements containing GLA have become popular in recent years for numerous applications. But let's look at one of the most important benefits of borage seed oil: helping to lower high blood pressure. Powerful Natural Blood Pressure Normalizer In 95 percent of the cases of high blood pressure, doctors are not sure about the cause. They call such cases idiopathic hypertension. In fact, some cases of hypertension are linked to impaired D6D activity, leading to a deficiency in gamma-linolenic acid. At the Department of Physiological Nursing, University of California, San Francisco, the effect of oils enriched with GLA on blood pressure was examined in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). "Significant reductions in blood pressure were obtained in SHR rats maintained on diets enriched with GLA oils. . . . the results suggest that GLA-enriched oils inhibit the development of hypertension in the SHR rat," said the researchers. In a clinical study involving 25 non-obese patients with moderately elevated blood pressure, one group was given a combination of GLA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, another essential fatty acid usually derived from fish oils). The control group was given the parent compounds of GLA and EPA. The group receiving GLA and EPA experienced a ten percent reduction in blood pressure after eight to twelve weeks. There was no change in the control group, indicating impaired D6D enzyme activity to be the cause since their bodies could not convert the parent compounds to their fully active metabolites, GLA and EPA. Borage oil helps in cases of high blood pressure in other ways. Elevated levels of aldosterone may also cause high blood pressure. In this condition, the kidneys release renin which stimulates, with the aid of angiotensin I and II, the adrenal gland to produce aldosterone. This influences the body's sodium and water uptake and raises blood pressure. Studies show GLA helps to normalize the body's production of aldosterone. In a recent experimental study, spontaneously hypertensive rats fed borage oil experienced significant declines in aldosterone levels and decreases in systolic blood pressure. Apparently, GLA works by inhibiting the body's response to angiotensin II, one of the intermediate chemicals leading to excess aldosterone production. Another way that GLA benefits circulatory health is by markedly reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In one clinical trial, 12 men with elevated cholesterol were given 240 mg of GLA for four months. Triglyceride levels quickly decreased by as much as 48 percent. Total cholesterol and levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, the bad cholesterol) went down significantly, while the beneficial high-density lipoprotein (HDL) increased by 22 percent. In experimental studies, GLA also increases levels of HDLs and may promote human longevity. The Doctor's Prescription Borage oil is available in liquid and capsule form. This is one food your doctor will likely approve of using, and you may find that borage oil is all you need to normalize your blood pressure. |

Hey, I just found this:
Dose: 1 to 3gm per day is a normal dose for healthy people. A 70kg individual (154 pounds) would need to consume 3.5gm of CLA daily to receive benefit. Most Americans consume only 1gm of conjugated linoleic acid. Whole milk usually contains 2mg per gram of fat but can be increased by feeding cows corn oil. Supplemental CLA is usually derived from safflower and/or sunflower oil. So, does this mean that the standard 3500mg per day is only a baseline and if the weight of a person is higher they need to take more? Tom (admin) Would you be able to shed some light here? |
