Texas Low Carber group- Aug

Hi, to all you Texans,

We are a Texas Low Carber group, who are planning on being "losers" who provide support, recipes, accountability to each other. Any low carb plan is welcome as we are a mixture of several. Feel free to post, no lectures, but we will give our suggestions if you ask. We try to start a new thread each month.

Welcome~

Welcome to August!

Glad to be back with you all for August. I'm OP and ready to end my first year of low carbing with solid results. I started in mid-August last year.

Cate, you're not short. The average height for an American woman over age 20 is 5' 3.8".

Isn't it funny how we always want something we don't have? I always wanted to be a little taller, too--and smaller boned. I am large boned. I also wanted straight hair, but got curly.

Yes, get that Whoosh fairy to visit, Annette!

Hey, Liz, I also wanted straight hair, but got curly. Well, when I look at your stats, maybe I am not so short.... Congrats on your successful year of low carbing.

Annette, you can do it!

Well, great day on plan. Ready with my lunch for tomarrow.

Ready to be on plan.

Hey I want curly hair! The grass is always greener I guess. Doing well in Austin. Just wishing October would get here and cool us down some. My weight doing fine. Today one of those I've been working hard, don't want to cook Schlotzkys sandwich days. Haven't had any trouble eating them once a week or so. I am starting to wonder if maybe my thyroid med dose is too high - have to have level checked in October. Maybe not - last time that happened my heart was beating fast and I was always sweating. I just don't want to start getting sloppy with my eating. Hope everyone has a great week and I will check back soon...Eileen

Oops, I skipped to the August thread before I read the end of the July thread. I missed Cate's grandbaby's arrival, the french fry triumph, and the height discussion.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I'm so glad that I found this group. I can deal with the slow loss as long as the trend is downward.

Cate,
congratulations on the little one's arrival! I'd love to have coffee sometime.

Liz,
you are close to your anniversary and so close to goal!

Eileen,
I have the thyroid issues also. I was diagnosed about 9 months ago and am still trying to get optimized. The reformulation of Armour is hard to factor in also. Do you split your dose? A few years ago, Schlotzys made a low carb wrap, I sure miss that.

Congrats on becoming a grandma, Cate! Very exciting! I somehow missed the birth, too.

Keep up the good work, ladies!

Hello everyone! Hope all is well. Annette - I have been taking a synthetic med - Levothyroxine (generic Synthroid) for over 20 years. Started out at a very low dose - .25 mg/day and over the years have gotten up to .175 - a pretty good dose. Have stayed at this level for probably over 5 years now. I try to stay away from the Thyroid Board because they are anti synthetic. I have done very well with it myself. I have never limited my intake of any particular food. Do what feels best for you! I have blood work done once a year. Glad to see your message about the July thread - I was not aware that Cate's grandbaby was born. Congrat's Cate!!! Looking forward to it myself - have heard grandbabies are awesome - just hoping my daughter gets a bit more settled first. She starts her new job at a built from the ground up Aveda salon next week. Excited for her. 105 in Austin today - only 1 public boat ramp opened for weeks nowdue to the lack of rain - 60 would feel great about now. Talk to everyone soon - Eileen

Hi, y'all,

Thanks for the congrats. Now if son, dil, grandbaby would just move alittle bit closer to Texas than 14 hours of hard driving. Grandbaby coming to visit for her first time the weekend of Aug 21st. We are so excited as we have only seen photos.

Boy, stress at my work is terrific. New folks in dept are a pain, very hostile working environment. Please keep me in your prayers for next Tuesday at 9.30 am. I have a job interview for a different department where I work.

Eileen, Annette, wow, thyroid issues. I have often I thought I had low thyroid issues, never showed up on a test, but I have often wondered by my fatique and other systems.

Liz, wow, so close to goal. Sounds great.

Well, have to hit the books again.

Will try to check in more in the next week.

I appreciate you all.

Hugs,
Cate

Cate - will be sending you some good karma for your interview. Last job I had was extremely hostile also - I was viewed as having a bad attitude because I wasn't willing to stay past 2pm after I'd already been there since midnight (14 hours). How exciting to see your grandbaby! Everyone enjoy the rest of the weekend - whats left of it - Eileen

Hi All,

It's been a crazy weekend. We drove to Austin this Friday afternoon and packed all my son's belongings in a uhaul, then drove to Lampasas for the night. On Saturday we drove on to Abilene and got him unpacked (in an upstairs apartment yet) and drove back home. Hot, tired, achy and up a pound and a half because I ate off plan. It felt like it had to more than 2 days because we got so much accomplished which is a good feeling.

I haven't seen a post by Chanty in August, but I did get some of the Frances Simun bread that she mentioned. My husband works near that area, so I sent him to pick some up. When he arrived they seemed amazed that he would walk in expecting them to have bread for him. They explained that you are supposed to order ahead and pick it up the next day. Lucky for me, they had 2 loaves in the freezer which he bought. He said from what he could tell, that lowcarb bread products was all that they made. I liked it a lot and it has 1-1/2 carbs per slice. I think I'll try the hamburger buns and pizza crusts next. I'll post if I try them.

Eileen,
I'm glad to hear that you are happy with your treatment. I hope to be where I need to be soon. I feel so much better since starting on meds. How exciting for your daughter. It sounds quite glamorous to be in sparkling new surroundings.

Cate,
I hope the interview goes well. I've been in that position, trying to be positive around negitivity or worse hostility.
I'm far from a thyroid expert, but I've heard that some doctors treat you based on symptoms rather than solely the labs. Apparently you can be on the lower end of normal values and still have thyroid issues. I would make a list of the symptoms that you have and present them to your doctor. One symptom of low thyroid is that the outer part of your eyebrows are either gone or sparse. I was so surprised when my eyebrows filled back in!

I hope everyone has a good week

Hi, y'all,
Yesterday had a stomach/lower GI thing going on with headache, nausea.

Today, I stayed home, am feeling much better tonight. DH made some chic soup, homemade, which kept me on track.

REmember my interview tomarrow, the hostile group are probably going to try to find out what the "lunch meeting " is about or stop me going.
Will let you know what happens as soon as I know.

Annette, you did have a busy time on the weekend. Aren't moving kids something? Thanks for the encouragement.

Eileen, thanks, for the encouragement, also.

Well, got to get ready for work tomarrow.

Have a great week, all.

On plan today.

Hi, ladies!

I'm just back from a mini vacance to see the DH's relatives. We had an OK time.

I was eating off plan like you, Annette. I'm interested to see what damage the scale reveals.

Cate, you will be in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow. Best wishes with your interview. You have to update us on how it goals. Hope you feel better.

Annette, that LC breads sounds terrific. Each slice has 1.5 carbs or net carbs? I've heard some companies subtract carbs for fiber included.

My heart goes out to you, Annette and Eileen, for your thyroid issues. So far (knock on wood) I seem to be OK in that area. Of course, I haven't been tested in 20 yrs.

Have a great rest of the evening.

Hi, fellow Texas losers!

Liz, thanks for the encouraging words and prayers. Glad you had a good time visiting DH's relatives.

Annette, Eileen, hope your week is going well.

As for my interview on Tuesday, I feel it was a good interview.
It will be another two weeks untill they complete the other interviews and the decision is made.
My prayers were answered with the scheduling part, the hostile "witch" sub leading our group didn't appear to the aware I was gone. I ate a shake on the run before lunch, so nobody was the wiser.

I have done pretty well this week, but can do better as I need to eat more vegies for sure. If I really had time for lunch instead of eating on the run each day, things would be better.

Well, hang in there, we can do it!

Hugs,
Cate

Hello everyone. I was trolling around on here and thinking that people come and go but we've had 4 or 5 regular posters which are always very encouraging to me. I look forward to coming here checking for any new posts daily. I'm thinking it would be great if we could all get together (when it gets cooler). Find a mid point or something. I wouldn't mind driving a couple of hours...

Cate, so glad your interview went well! Best wishes with the outcome.

Eileen, a get together would be fun. Hopefully, we'll find a time and place to do that.

Have a great day!

Looks like everyone close to DFW! Drove there once a really long time ago for a meeting for a job I had and somehow on the way home I ended up in Mesquite...But not as bad as I remember Houston - only place I've driven where they use exit ramps as passing lanes...scary. Most "Im not from around here" driver friendly place I've driven is Corpus Christi - almost impossible to get lost...Enough traffic chatter - I'm about to fire up my "find" from Big Lots last week - a personal size electric skillet - 12 bucks - used it 4 times already...Tonight will be bacon cheeseburger and a sliced white flesh nectarine. Hope everyone has a safe weekend...Eileen

Welcome, surrealchereal, glad to have you join.

Eileen, wow, when it gets cooler, it would be nice to all meet somewhere.
Aren't you in Austin? We could meet somewhere in between if you'd like.

Well, haven't heard anything about the job, might be a couple of weeks as they are still interviewing.

I am working on my final paper.
Will talk to you later.

Hugs,
Cate

Hi and thanks for the welcome! I moved down here in Feb 09 alone.
I was living in Flint, MI and there was no chance for a job there or close to there so I packed my car and hit the road. It's almost been too exciting for someone my age

I have a job working in a school and plan to get certified to teach. So far things are moving along as they should... except I put on some weight sitting here a lone all summer... (that'll teach me).

I originally lost about 40 lbs and have gained about 15 back, I still need to loose 30 or 40 more. I'm glad I found this forum, sure helps to have online friends when you need to stay focused.

Hello everyone. Yes Cate - I am in Austin. I'm wondering where would be the halfway point - probably someplace north of Waco? I'm geographically challenged. Wow surrealchereal - sounds like Thelma and Louise...LOL. What an adventure. So how do you feel about the heat? It really isnt usually this hot for this many days on end. We haven't had rain in Austin for I can't remember how long. I have seen on the weather on TV that Dallas area has gotten slammed with storms a few times. I look out on my dead grass...Well - everyone have a great week and I'll talk to everyone soon...Eileen

Gosh, such change and excitement! I'm sure it all had to be a little scary. Then again, Flint is scary now, too, with all the unemployment. What do you do at the school?

Eileen, I think Waco is little less than half the way. However, I'm not sure there's too much just north of there. There's Italy and Waxahachie, but I'm not familiar with the area. I'm sure we could work something out, but my biggest stumbling block to meeting is my load of obligations. I have three young kiddos and a husband. When I'm not working or in school, they usually take all my time. A trip may be difficult for me--but not impossible. I'm glad you're thinking of the fall because right now we're getting back to school and all that entails.

Have a great rest of the day!

Thelma and Louise, yes only Louise was played by my cat!
I'm working as an instructional aide in a sped junior high school.
I've lived in heat before and this was not problem, actually it was what I was looking for!

Geeze I went to Target today looking for an egg beater (you know the hand crank job) they didn't even have one! I couldn't believe it, don't people use them anymore?
But I did get a mixer for only 6.99, hopefully it will hold up to whipping egg whites.

Surrealchereal (is your name Chereal?), you'll need the electric mixer for things like oopsie rolls, believe me. Geez it takes me a good 10 minutes at high speed to get the egg whites firm enough. I held out for years with a hand mixer and my own beating prowess, but had to cave when I switched to lc.

Working with the sped kiddos is so great. Good for you!

I never used anything but an egg beater (for egg whites)- I'm showing my old age.

I couldn't believe it that cheapo mixer was awesome! It knocked out those egg whites in no time flat! I never turned it up past medium Maybe you should check it out! it is their (Target) 6.99 Chief Mate- it's got small beaters and they work very well on egg whites. Even decent balance... (I've used lots of good kitchen equipment- this little bugger shocked me)

The oppsies turned out great!

My first name is Cheryl

Hi, Cheryl. Glad your Target egg beater worked for you. (I doubt you're much older than me. I'm a hold out on electrical items, too. My DH bought me my electric beater and kept wondering why I would always beat things by hand.)

OK - sounds like we are all the "over 30" crowd! I understand about the egg beater Cheryl - I still have a turn key (manual) can opener! And my good deal - I work for HEB (overnight baker) and get to troll the clearance area before the store opens - got a Mr Coffee automatic iced tea maker marked down to $4.99...The hand mixer I have is from my bridal shower in 1985 - so you've got some company!
