Any Charlotte area peeps?
Hi all. I am getting anxious about our upcoming move to Charlotte, NC. After a lifetime in upstate NY (the last 11 years in Buffalo) we are heading down south. So if you are living in the Charlotte area, maybe you could help me with a few concerns I have....
1) What are the best grocery stores? I am absolutely spoiled by Wegmans, and I think this concerns me the most. 2) What are some good non-chain restaurants? Price range doesn't really matter. DH and I love to eat out, from diners to fine dining, but we prefer good non-chain restaurants (although that doesn't stop us from hitting up Fridays and the like as well). Low carb-friendly is not important; I've learned that all restaurants are relatively "do-able" in this lifestyle. 3) Do you know of any good gyms? My complex has a decent little work-out room, but I might be interested in more. 4) Do you know of any good parks/trails for walking/biking/rollerblading? Thanks! |

Donna - you will LOVE Charlotte! I lived there for 4 years before moving back to Louisville where my parents live. I miss Charlotte a lot.
Harris Teeter grocery stores are everywhere in Charlotte, and they're really nice. DH and I used to go to the Walmart for most of our groceries, but Harris Teeter has really good stuff, it's just kind of pricey. The best restaurants are in uptown or the south end. Luce and Blue are two very good restaurants in uptown. And if you want to sample some of the best southern food in the country, you have to go to Mert's Heart and Soul on College street. Parks are not Charlotte's strong suit. One of the things they are trying to do is improve the walking/biking trail situation there, but I'm not sure if it's any better than when we lived there. There are some beautiful hiking trails in the mountains though, which are not far away. Best of luck with your move - you're going to a great place!

I lived in Charlotte a few years after undergrad and LOVED it. I still miss it and visit often (I only live about an hour's drive away).
Harris Teeter is your best bet but it all depends on what area you will be staying in. As for gyms, that depends on where you stay also. There are a couple of Bally's but one is in a not so good area so make sure you do a search before you start exploring. If you like like soul food there is a little place called The Coffee Cup in the Uptown area (Oop! I think they are only open for breakfast and lunch but worth a visit if you are new to the South). I love the uptown area for evenings, the South Park area is nice too (that's the "old money" area). I am sure it will be a much slower pace than what you are used to but I think you will like it once you get the hang of things. Welcome to the South!!!

I'm in Cornelius, which is just north of Charlotte. I like Harris Teeter, but I have noticed that Food Lion has a much better Natural Foods Section. They even have some of the syrups that Netrition has. There are some health food stores closer into Charlotte - it all depends on where you are going to be locating - the south area has everything you could ever want. Davidson is right next to me and there is a locally owned co-op health food store that I go to sometimes. Welcome to Charlotte and let me know if you need anything!!! |
