UK/ Europe Flax question

I know Flax is not called that here in the UK. I am wanting to add this to my diet to make things move a bit better. So where do I find it and what is it called?

I use golden linseed (flax) I have a teaspoon in a glass of cold water everyday, the seeds stick to the side a bit so by the time I've swallowed the last of them it's probably more like three glasses of water!! Health food shops do them.

I was told to use a coffee grinder to grind them up. That you digest them better. Have you heard this? Can you find them at Holland and Barret? I am still learning all the shops.

So I need to look for Linseed. Funny but I used Linseed oil to help condition the leathers and things for my horses. So I was having a hard time trying to figure out if this was the same stuff.

I don't know. I do know that Lori says she sprinkles it on everything she can. I know she sprinkles it on salads because she was posting about that.

yes, it is linseed and you can sprinkle it on salads etc,I just found it on another forum, apparently you can get it in H and B, ie flaxmeal (ground linseed), its funny because like cornmuffin,we used to rub down our bridles etc with it,so,I had this vision of trying to swallow that stuff.
Hope this helps

Lori is in the states. I have yet to buy it here. But I guess I will look at H & B. I just need to make a list of what all I need the next time I go.

yes its called linseed and i got mine in h&b .. they have the dark and the golden and i think they have some ground but thats more expensive

cosmic dont try and grind it in a hand coffee grinder cos it wont work.. trust me i tried lol.. u really need a good electric grinder i use my magic bullet for it

my understanding was that its better for u to eat the ground stuff then it is to eat the seeds whole.. cant remember why something to do with releasing the oils i think i am sure someone will know

and yes i remember using linseed oil on leather too lol

I am sure it is best to grind the flax seeds, especially if you want the 'cleansing' benefits.

Shy, I think you make a cereal type thing from this too? I buy some for my daughter at vast expense from an unmentionable site, but my guess is yours is just as good.

The oil is good for making salad dressing...not the stuff you buy in art stores.

SO do you make this bread in the microwave? How big does it get?
Does someone have a way to bake in the proper oven.
Also what is a silver bullet?

I personally don't think flax would make a nice bread in a machine. it is too heavy to rise nicely. it mixes up fast in the bowl, so why bother?

you might want to try the muffins again. Maybe it's the microwaving that is giving you a different consistentcy. We all liked the flax muffins, even all of my five kiddos ate them!

Here's my recipe, changed a bit from whitelighter1968's one, because I only have powdered splenda and no flavoured syrups.

2 cups milled (ground) flax (golden is best) (linseed in the UK)
1 cup nuts
1/2 cup granulated splenda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda

1 t. vanilla essence
1 t. cinnamon
1/2 cup greek yoghurt
1/3 cup cooking oil
4 eggs beaten

bake 180 (fan oven) for 15 minutes (grease pans lightly)

I think the yogurt is the secret ingredient in mine, makes them moister and richer tasting. Adds carbs though, so you could leave it out. You can experiment with the flavours. My local shop sells lemon essense. Or you could add cocoa powder and/ or coconut like some posters. If you come up with any new ideas, please share them!

Sorry....MAGIC Bullet...
Maid what is the carb count on that please? How many does it make?
I can't use a microwave. I need an oven. AND do not laugh but the reason is I blew my microwave up. So I felt like since I had destroyed it I shouldn't buy a new one.

Got this from Loner

2 minute flax muffin recipe Phyl in chat gave me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 tablespoon olive oil
3 tablespoons of flax meal
spenda (i use the sweet freeze)
1 tablespoon of cinnamon
nutmeg...not sure how much
1/8 tsp baking soda
1 egg

glass dish nuke 1 1/2-2 minutes

Hi Cosmic, plugged it into fitday, this is net carbs though (fiber only subtracted, no other types). I got 29.5 carbs for an entire batch of 12. or 2.5 carbs per muffin. I think one is enough for a serving, they are very filling and must expand in your belly or something.

The yoghurt exemption means that there are less carbs in the carton than listed due to bacteria eating up the sugars. You may not agree. I believe it, never had a problem with yoghurt, plus yoghurt is such a healthy food anyway. You can easily see how varying the ingredients like nuts will change the carbs, vice versa, if we could ever get our hands on some SF syrups, you could eliminate 12 carbs alone due to the splenda.

You don't need to use the yoghurt at all, btw, that was something I added to make them nicer for my dh and kids to eat and to make up for the lack of liquid splenda.

2 cups milled (ground) flax (0 carb)
1 cup nuts (varies, for walnuts 8 carbs net)
1/2 cup granulated splenda (12 grams)
1 tsp baking powder (1 gram)
1 tsp baking soda (1 gram)

1 t. vanilla essence (varies, read labels. 0.5 gram)
1 t. cinnamon (.6 g)
1/2 cup greek yoghurt (4 gram IF you believe the yoghurt exemption)
1/3 cup cooking oil (0 carb)
4 eggs beaten (2.4g for large eggs)

bake 180 (fan oven) for 15 minutes (grease pans lightly)
