Omaha, NE / Western Iowa
Hi Everyone,
Anyone out there in the Omaha area? I'm relatively new here (was transferred in June), and I find myself wanting to try out some of the great steak places Omaha is supposedly famous for. It's hard to convince my friends to go -- if they have to pay anything more than the $3 or $4 they'd spend at McDonald's or Taco Bell, they don't want anything to do with it. (Their loss!) Anyway, I'm down in Bellevue, NE. (Offutt AFB.) If anyone wants to start an Omaha group, let's get going! I'm tired of doing this by myself! -Amy

GO BIG RED!!!!!
I'm from Bellevue and grew up eating from the best steak houses in the state! I no longer live there but I can give you some killer places to eat. One excellent place is Casios steak house. I havn't eaten there in a few years but it used to be the best in town by far. It's in south Omaha not too far off 13th street but I can't remember the address. Caniglias was another of the best but it was torn down to make room for the riverfront walk area when I was back there last week. Shame too, that place was there for about 50 years. Another great place to eat if you like BBQ is Amarillo right there in Belleview down on Ft. Crook road. The sauce comes on the side so it's all LC friendly. I always get the 3 meat combo with brisket, sausage, and featherbones with slaw and beans for the side. I ate there last Monday and miss it already! Lot's of old steak houses in that area and down by the old market area. Ask around a little, everyone has their favorite and will probably all dissagree! |

I'll answer your question - my husband and I both graduated from UNL in May 2001. I got a psychology degree, his was in chemical engineering. It was decided early on that he had the better (ie: big bucks) degree. There really are very few chem engineering opportunites in NE. CargillDow has some joint thing going on in Omaha, and he tried to get in there, but they were looking for someone with some experinece - not a 22 year old. So we expanded our search nation wide, and ended up down here in Baton Rouge. Exxonmobil hired DH as a chemical contact engineer, and the rest is history!
I really can't complain - the oil industry is a great place for an engineer right now! But I'm not so hot on the south. I don't know what all this is about "southern hospitality" - these people have not been to the midwest! Every time we go home, were amazed how nice everyone is. Service is excellent, and people are just generally happier. Living through Katrina has really made us both home sick. There is so much crime and fraud here now. Baton Rouge used to be the size of Lincoln, now it's more like Omaha. I can't believe how much nicer and safer Omaha is - I'd love to be living there. If only the job and the salary could go with it! We may be back sooner than we think - DH is graduating in May from LSU with his MBA. Maybe Cargill will take another look? |

With all these Nebraska people here this IS where all the cool people hang out!!
I actually moved away when I was 9 but have a lot of family and my best friend lives there so I visit quite often. I live in Colorado now on the front range about 25 miles north of Denver. Beautiful place to live and we never run out of things to do but I still get home sick, especially watching the Huskers play and seeing all that red! Once your a Husker fan your Always a Husker fan (Which is kind of hard here due to all the CU fans). Alibaba, we do a lot of work down that way as we're indirectly in the oil and gas business as well. We do quite a lot of work with Exxon especially. Some of our guys brought back photos of the damage from Katrina that is unreal, and this is over a year later! I hope you and your family made it through ok. Looks like we have our own secret orginization, the Coalition of Corn! |

Hey, Huskers! GO BIG RED! DH and I are both Nebraskans, born and raised (well, I was born across the river but grew up in Nebraska) I'm from Lincoln and he's from Blair. We met at UNL, ended up in Chicago for 20+ years then took a transfer to the Dallas area where we've been ever since. He eventually left computer field service and has his own thriving handyman business (these kids from the farm are apparently the only guys who know how to fix things anymore) and I run our home office answering phones, bookkeeping, etc.
Growing up in Lincoln was wonderful...how I miss the wholesome small town atmosphere with the big city conveniences! My parents were huge Nebraska football fans, active in the Huskers Club, and even attending most away games. Mom even had their bedroom decorated with red carpeting! She's gone now but Dad is still a big fan. He's a snowbird these days and very involved with the winter Nebraskans down in the Rio Grande valley. One brother lives in Omaha and another in Loup City. MIL is still in Blair. We only get up for a visit abt every 5 years or so....it's the MOST boring drive ever! I love Texas this time of year...don't miss those -20* winters AT ALL but do miss having "some" winter and especially miss autumn. Rustling leaves, campfires with s'mores, corn on the cob....aaahhhhhh! Texans only get about a week each of autumn and winter. They only allow 2 seasons down here: hot and hotter! Anyway, howdy from South Nebraska as we like to call Texas!
